Whether or not he can preach a spell-binding sermon, I expect a pastor to love his congregation and personally minister to them when they are going through trials and joyful times. If he's too busy to do that Monday-Saturday, then he probably should be a Bible college/seminary teacher rather than a pastor.

Primarily good teaching. Able to feed milk to those that need milk and meat to those that need meat.

Someone who is true to the simplistic Word of God in deed and in teaching; as the Word says;

(Heb 13:7) Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.

See the "Spoken the Word of God", see the Faith that is worthy to follow; that is what to look for.

Thanks
RC

I look for the Spirit of God, for the teaching, preaching, and living Word of God, and I look for a willingness to be accountable based on Scripture.

I'm not looking for one but here's my list:
someone with a vital love relationship with Jesus
someone who cares for the soul prosperity of others
someone who is able to teach God's word
someone who is humble.

And really only the first requirement is necessary. If you are in a vital loving relationship with Jesus you will care for the soul's of others, you will be able to teach other's of God and you will be humble.

A godly person, who lives a simple life, preaches the Word, is a good example, has a family, isn't held down by traditions or habits and is open to change based upon the needs of the congregation.

I just like to add...A person who is wiling to admit their flaws that just because their close to G-d they are not perfect. I don't need a 'soft 'Pastor I need a balanced Pastor.

Generally I look for someone above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.

Someone who is able to manage his own household well, keep his children under control; he shouldn't be a new convert, and he must have a good reputation with those outside the church.

I think that about sums it up.

S/he should be a trusted, charismatic, familiar figure who can rightously thump me over the head with applied scripture as needed.

looking for a pastor, this is difficult in todays world. here are a few things that i look for.

1. a bold pastor that openly recognizes jesus christ as lord and saviour. one that will call his name no matter of laws or what people think.

2. someone that is not going to give a feel good message of what people want to hear rathewr than the what they need.

3. one that is not afraid to tell people the gospel and if they are offended by it then he still stands by the gospel.

4. one that is not afraid to tell what sin is and where it leads.

5. one that never preaches that we are rich in material things with christ.

6. one that can give a testimony of hope in christ.

wow i just learned something about my pastor. i was telling him that i thought things were not happening fast enough. He told me he needs to be the servant of the Lord, i.e. he cant just force people to do things. wow, i dont think i would have enough patience to do that. (it was not something sinful or anything, just something that could improve the services).

if it were me, I'd be beating people on the head, so to speak! but our pastor refrains from being carnal like that.. so i suppose that works two ways.. when i am in trouble, i would not want someone to beat me over the head. i'd want someone gentle.
