Found this very interesting. I've heard some of these, but not all. If you do some research you'll find most of these came from Scripture, but got changed around or added to which gave them completely different meanings. 36 Quotations NOT in the Bible The time will come when you cannot tell summer from winter, but by the falling of the leaves. Woe to the dog seller and buyer. If any man says he is free from sin he is a liar and the truth is not in him. Death bed repentance will not save the soul in the day of judgment. It is a shame for a woman to worship with her head bare. Once in grace always in grace. Once a son always a son. It is a sin for a woman to preach in a church. It is a sin to plait the hair. A woman is not responsible for her sins. There is neither male nor female in heaven. Money is the root of all evil. A **** shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Woe to them that use instruments of music like David’s in the church. In the last days men will become weaker and wiser. There is a sickness unto death. God works and none can hinder. Charity begins at home. Mourn at the birth and rejoice at the death of a child. The things I once hated I now love, and the things I loved I now hate. Once a man and twice a child. The time will come when the door of mercy will be closed to Gentiles. It is not all life to live or all of death to die. Don’t take what you can’t give. Cleanliness is next to godliness. It is better to cast your seed in the belly of a whore than to spill it on the ground. God moves in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. Spare the rod and spoil the child. God has chosen the old people because they know the way, and the young because they are strong. I have found a thousand men to one woman who can be trusted. God helps those who help themselves. The husband is the saviour of the wife. The woman must not seek to rule the man or dominate the earth. In the midst of life we are in death. God tempers the wind for the shorn lamb. The world will be ruled by a people from the east in the last days.

ORIGINAL: johnnyray what about the eleventh commandment? Thou shalt not judge. I'm not sure if I'd add that to the list. You're right in that it isn't a commandment, but Jesus did suggest that we not judge, and followed it by the reason(s) why. "Do not judge so that you will not be judged." - Matthew 7:1 (NASB)

That verse is very much misused to mean never to say that anything anyone does is sinful. It never says we are judged for judging. If you take the entire context, as well as the context of Romans 2, you find that it is saying that we are judged for doing the same things that we judge in others, not for judging in and of itself. If that were wrong, how do you explain John 7:24: "Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment."? It does not mean that we are not to use our mental faculties. If I read in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin, then it is not disobeying any Scripture about judgment to say that those living in open, unrepentant homosexuality are committing a sin, and that God will hold them accountable for it.

I'll let your statement be. This is not the thread in which to argue that point. Matthew 7:1 must mean something.

ORIGINAL: McFatty I'll let your statement be. This is not the thread in which to argue that point. Matthew 7:1 must mean something. Scripture must be used in context with passage itself and in conjunction with other scripture. Matt 7:1 - 5 (ESV) 1“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. We are to judge knowing that, we too, are subject to judgement. It does NOT mean that we are to let things slide and do nothing at all. Judg 21:25 (ESV) 25In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

If any man says he is free from sin he is a liar and the truth is not in him. 1 John 1:7 - 10 (ESV) 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. If the truth is not in us, we are, by definition, liars.

When did I say let things slide and do nothing at all? You must also take from this passage that with whatever measure we judge others, we will also be judged. Also, we shouldn't start pointing out the sins in other people's lives until we've cleaned up our own. That's what I get from this passage, at least. I don't know how to get anything else.

I think, as too often happens on this board, we are in agreement, merely emphasizing different points.

I think the point is.....these EXACT quotes that we've heard all our lives are NOT in the Bible exactly as we've heard them. Doesn't mean they aren't true, just not quoted properly.

Some of them aren't true, such as "God helps those who helps themselves." That's why discernment and a working knowledge of the Bible are important. BTW: Thanks, McFatty and Colliefan for taking off and expanding on what I said about the way Matthew 7:1 gets used. I agreed with both of you, so I think McFatty is right that we really are in agreement, just emphasizing different points. And probably McFatty is right, too, that this isn't the thread to argue that point. It just came up and that's a pet peeve of mine.

Cast your bread upon the water, and it will return as soggy dough. A wicked flea no one pursueth. Go and sin no more, lest a wasp sting come upon you.

Now that we're back on topic (hurray) I'll reiterate the most important one for me: "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." This quote is used in Biblical discussions all the time.

I think what Jesus was saying was don't be a hypocrite. If you will read verse 2 and then on down to verse 15-20, he tells you how to judge false prophets, by their fruits.
