My 5 year old has been asking a lot of questions about the devil recently. Especially before he goes to bed. We want to be truthful (eg yes, the devil does exist) but also don't want him to feel afraid or dwell on those things.

So far we have answered him by telling him that the devil is scared of Jesus and that ds can speak the name of Jesus at any time, that we pray for our house and because we are a Christian home God dwells here and therefore ds does not have to be afraid.

I don't think anything in particular has triggered this - just that he is getting older and getting more aware of things. He has had some bad dreams recently because he heard a story in his school assembly about children who were being abandoned and he said in his dream they were drowning.

I want to answer my son in a way that is sensitive and that also helps him to feel secure.

Sounds like you have given the best answer. The only thing I would add is some Bible verses to support what you have said.

That's hard isn't it? I know at school the kids were always trying to find the picture of the devil in their children's bible for some reason. I just asked them all one day what it is they wanted to know and then said we would talk about other wonderful nice things in the Bible from then on (these were 5 year old kids). It did the trick, they asked a few questions but noone really wanted to know anymore about it, they wanted to know about Jesus, Moses, Noah etc. I think you are doing the right thing, letting him know that he is real but that Jesus is our protection against him etc. I haven't been there with my DD much, she likes to find his pic in her Bible and say "we don't like him! he doesn't like Jesus" and then turns the page.

our kids love the song "No Monsters" by Carman. It really helps them deal with the realization of the spiritual side of things, but also teaches them about our own power through Christ.
