Has anyone here ever taken Acai berry supplements, and if so, what brand and did it help you in any way? I have been reading about Acai berry and how it is supposed to give you energy, help you lose weight, and make you healthier. The ads claim it is a "superfood". If all the claims are true, I really need to take it. I would like to hear from people who have actually taken it though, and get their opinion of it.

I was looking at some capsules, and I probably wouldn't taste those. I did read that acai berries were a popular flavoring for ice cream and beverages in South America. Maybe it was something else in the Emergen-C that tasted nasty.

I don't know. I take it every morning and find most flavors delectable.

The acai berry actually smelled up the office. I keep seeing ads for the stuff, but I admit I haven't looked into it at all.

Hello everyone!
I haven't been on crosswalk for a while now. But I saw this acai berry discussion and had to join in.

I get the acai berry in juice form. If you go to your local Jewel and look in the yogurt section, you will see some acai berry smoothies and the brand is Sambazon. Sambazon is supposed to be really good and that's the brand I get. I don't take supplements though.

There isn't a lot of scientific studies out there on acai berry, but there is some out there and you can find it on this website.

The thing is that there are a zillion things on the market today that are supposed to do this. The problem is, people are willing to pay for a quick fix without changing their lifestyle too much.

You need to make sure that there are no underlying medical conditions that are having an effect on you. You need to look at what you eat in general, not just one thing. You need to be prepared to do a little more than take a couple of tablets every day.

I suspect that the people who claim that it gives energy, helps in weight loss etc are often those who've made changes to their lifestyle with regard to what they eat and the exercise they do etc.

It doesn't take many changes to make you feel better (I know, I've done it) and it doesn't necessarily mean adding a supplement like acai berries into your diet ~ especially if they're expensive (the money perhaps could be better used to buy more fresh fruit and veggies).

Hello all.consuming.fire,

It all depends on the brand you get if it works. I know Sambazon is a good brand of acai and it does have a lot of antioxidants. But I will say one thing there hasn't been many studies on this berry, so we don't exactly know the benefits it contains. But I do tend to believe the anecdotal evidence because the same happened with green tea. The Chinese and Japanese have been preaching about green tea's health benefits for thousands of years and in the 1970's scientists started to study green tea. Well, all science did was confirm wehat the Chinese and Japanese were saying all along and now it is a widely accepted scientific fact that green tea is one of the world's most potent sources of antioxidants. Green Tea has so many wide-ranging health benefits that I don't think any other substance on eath can claim. There has been thousands of studies confirming this.

But the acai is new but I will believe the anecdotes only because of what happened to green tea. The same is probably gonna happen. But, you should eat a healthy diet still. I know many studies have shown that green tea can reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease even on a high fat diet. But, that is still not encouraged. You should still eat a healthy diet with the acai berry like Agapetos said or else you will not get the full benefits. And another thing, what brand do you have? There are scams out there and you have to be careful which one to get. I would say go with Sambazon Acai. They have multiple products like Juice, Smoothies, freeze-dried powder, supplements, etc. The people who founded Sambazon are Jeremy and Ryan Black (they're brothers) and technically they are the ones who introduced acai to North America.

Here is their website.

You could get this brand of acai at your local Jewel. Just go into the yogurt aisle and you will see the Sambazon juice and smoothies.

Coconut oil and cider vinegar are also said to improve health and aid in weight loss.

I agree there are other foods that help with those things too. Green tea is another example that has been scientifically proven. Acai I know doesn't have much science behind it, but they did do the ORAC Assay on it and it came out pretty high. I don't know about the weight loss claim though. There is some anecdotal evidence that points to it helping with weight loss.

I just have to say I'm so sick of seeing of seeing these Acai Berry Diet advertisements on FB and Myspace and everywhere else! LOL! But, I was curious too. The first time I ever heard of acai was when I was buying some yogurt, and my brand came out with a new flavor "Pomegranite Acai berry". I never heard of it and tried it. Pretty good stuff.

Hello Mrs.X,
I don't blame you. There isn't much scientific evidence that Acai berry can help you lose weight. It's too new to the scientific world. I do buy the juice anyway and it tastes pretty good. Hey, all fruits and vegetables are good for you, and acai berry is a fruit.

All I know is that my pastor who is also a doctor told me that you cannot replace a fruit or vegetable with a pill or liquid supplement because there is so much to that fruit or vegetable that when you start to mess with it and extract things, you kind of loose the full effect of the nutrients because they all work together.

Vitamins and supplements are great for filling in the gaps, but you still need to eat decent food in order for the supplements to give any benefit.

Hello MrsTracy,

I just came home from shopping at Jewel and Whole Foods, and my husband bought six 10 oz bottles of acai berry juice. We drink the juice, we don't take the supplements. But Sambazon's supplements are not extracts, they are actually freeze-dried acai, full acai berry in capsules. It takes a long time to fill them because of the oil content of the berry. Sambazon capsules aren't extracts, they are actually the whole fruit. I know that sounds hard to believe.

Sambazon is the best brand of acai to get, other brands are just copies and aren't as good.

As for me, I actually eat a good diet and I drink a lot of green tea, about 4 to 5 cups a day. I tend to strive for 5 cups of green tea a day. Acai is a very new component to my diet.

Soli Deo Gloria,
Jessica

Just because something is a copy, doesn't mean it's inferior.

I'm with MrsTracy, supplements are great for filling in the gaps but they shouldn't be used as a replacement to eating fruit and veggies.

And no matter how much 100% juice you drink, it still counts as only 1 portion a day.

Actually I have looked at alot of juices and soups to get my veggies and fruits and to be totally honest, I have found that if you drink the v8 fusions I think it is, you get a full serving of fruits and vegetables in each 8 ounce glass. AND it isn't expensive. But again, you do loose out when you alter any fruit or veggie and even freezedrying can reduce the nutrients in some things. But if it works for you then go for it. I have tried most everything and there is no fruit or vegetable that is better than the other. They all have a function and that is why we are to eat a variety of the colors. Most Americans don't do that.

I know this isnt about the acai berry, so i hopeits ok to post this. Someone mentioned the green tea above. I know I havent done research into it, except here things accidentally here and there like on tv or amagazine or the internet. I have a hard time imagining the light color the green tea comes out in the end. to have so many properties that are going to make much of difference, when they always say about vegetables--the darker the green, the more nutrients are in it. If I;m wrong, anybody care to explain why? Perhaps they prepared it different in China.

Even V8 (at least the V8 they sell here) will say that you should only count juice as one portion.

Hello Pamsy,
It is a widely accepted fact in the scientific community that green tea is one of the most potent sources of antioxidants in the world. Green tea contains a huge amount of antioxidants, including many types of polyphenols. But the most potent in green tea are the catechins, which are some of the most potent antioxidants in the world and you can only get them from green tea. It is also mainly the catechins that are responsible for many of green tea's wide ranging and powerful health benefits. But green tea also contains many other antioxidants as well.

About your question about green tea's color, the Camellia Sinensis bush (the tea plant) is an evergreen shrub.

Black tea doesn't have the same amount of antioxidants or health benefits, mainly because it has been fermented and because of that a lot of the health benefits toss out along with fermentation. But still, black tea does contain some important health benefits.

Here is a web site that is just all about green tea and it was started by Dr Nadine Taylor, a registered dietician.
