My favourite author is Janette Oke. I've just about read all of her books. I love her style and the way she writes. Thinking ahead to when I've finished the last of her books, does anybody know of another author who is very similar in style and genre?

Try Francine Rivers, Dee Henderson, Terry Blackstock.

And pm Kimmie, she reads all that romance junk.

Bill, and thanks.

I've tried Deeanne Gist and a few others, and they're just not the same.

What about Lauraine Snelling? Gilbert Morris? Tracie Peterson? Cathy Marie Hake?

I liked those Oke books(when I read them about 10 years ago), too, and like the other authors suggested. I liked Gist's book, too, so maybe we just have slightly different taste.

Francine Rivers is good. I have a question about Janette Oke, is her book Love Comes Softly just like the movie, or different? I have only seen the movie, not read the book.

The Love Comes Softly DVDs do turn out different from the books. Both are good, I think.

I've got some Lauraine Snelling books, and I'm looking into getting some Tracie Peterson. Haven't had anything to do with Cathy Marie Hake or Gilbert Morris, other than seeing them on the Christian bookshop shelf.

Thank you. That is good to know. I have seen the movie 5 times, but have not read any of her books.

I saw the movie of Love Comes Softly. That got me to buy the books and read them. I've been hooked on her books ever since.

I like the books that mentioned and they are all good authors, however none have quite the same writing style of Oke. The closest of all the authors I have read is:
Lori Wick- The Californians and the Kensington Cronicles are good.

When you do feel like something different Francine Rivers is really good. If you are sensitive to graphic details of any kind. I would skip her. I have some friends who just can't read her. I love them all.

I would say maybe Lauraine Snelling has a bit of the same style but haven't read too much lately so I might be wrong. They don't come better than Janette Oke!!

You're right, junerose, they don't come better than Janette Oke!

I've just started a Lauraine Snelling book.

I'm not into graphic books. I tend to 'live' in the book when I'm reading it, so not a good idea for me to be reading graphic books.

I've just started a Lauraine Snelling book.

I noticed on other threads that you're working you are way through those. Are you enjoying the Ruby series?

Have you tried the Red River series? There are three sets of series that have bloomed from that first novel. It's about Norwegein immigrants in the Minnesota area (I think.) The first series starts in the 1800's and the other series procede about two generations. I think you would like them. Each series can stand alone, but I'd recommend starting with the first series and working your way through all the novels.

I must admit that I am enjoying the Dakota Treasures series. (Ruby, Pearl, Opal). I've only got up to reading Opal so far.

I haven't tried the Red River series. I can't remember seeing it in the Christian bookstore. Maybe I'll look next time. Thanks for the tip.

It's interesting seeing what's around. Right now I don't want to get into the Amish stories, but I'm sure at some stage, I will.

They are OK. The Abrams daughters series is good, but each novel ends unsatisfactorily. You keep expecting a fairytale ending, but it's like life... no guarantee of circumstances being fun. It's very different from her early novels where the innocent girl always end up with the dashing (and dare I say Heroic?) Canadian Mountie.

I read "Love Comes Softly" and "Love's Enduring Promise". They weren't too bad, but the way the people talked kind of annoyed me.

I didn't always like the accents, but I liked the stories, so in some ways ignored the accents a little bit. She has other books that don't have those accents, and I've found them to be good.

I wish I could watch the movie "Love comes softly" starring Katherine Hegel. I watched a footage on the website. I have all her story of Love comes softly, however I haven't finished them yet.

Yes I can definitely say that buying her books is worth of every penny. She is worthy of every penny. Her novels are filled with wisdom, biblical insights that every Christian will appreciate.

The first 5 DVDs from the "Love Comes Softly" series have come out based on the books, but they stray from the story lines of the books. Still very good though.

I'm new here... I actually found this site by googling Janette Oke, because I've been looking for a Janette Oke fan forum for a while now, but haven't come across anything so far.. anyway, this thread came up... I wanted to join the discussion... and the website seemed pretty cool

I love Janette Oke.. I am reading one of her last books.. infact.. I skipped school this morning and layed on my sisters bed and read like 10 chapters! I have a whole bunch of other books out too.. I've got Lauraine Snelling's "Red River Series" out.. well the first one anyway.. the first "American Century" by Gilbert Morris, "Rekindled" by Tamera Alexander, "Just Jane" By Nancy Moser.. and thats all I can think of.. anyway, you might want to try some of that stuff.. or check out www.bethanyhouse.com ... they have pages and pages of new release books or coming soon books... that where I found the other books I've gotten from the library.

Anyway.. I'm glad to have been able to find some other Janette Oke fans! Have any of you met her? I almost did... I was like so super close!! I was a Jr. Bridesmaid for my cousin last year and it turned out that her future in-laws were like close friends with Janette Oke!! Her wedding was at the church that Janette Oke goes to, so I had my mom take a picture of me beside her and Edwards church mail box!! ... Janette Oke would've been at the wedding, but she was away on a 6 week cruise!! So I left a note in her mail box, with my email address, and a few months later, she replied!! I was so suprised and excited!! We've been emailing back and forth for almost a year... Its been really nice to be able to ask her all the questions I've been longing to ask for so long!!

Anyway.. I better go.. its getting late!!

Hi Tori, welcome to Crosswalk!

Yes, I love Janette Oke. I'm reading all of her books that I can get my hands on. I'm on the second last series that I can get and the last of the last of her series that I can get are on their way here from the US. (I'm in Australia). I've got the first 5 DVDs from the series and I've ordered number 6 for when it comes out in May of this year. I really like the books and the DVDs.

WOW..., What a Joy!! I have to say I've read all her books. I can not tell you how many of her books I've ordered and given away as gifts; there have been lots and lots. In fact when I worked one series after another were shared around with co-workers and they were, more than any other, the topic of laughs, tears, and general conversation on how each identified with different parts of each book. I love her writing style and her books. I identify with so much that almost feel like she's got to be my best friend; yet I've never met her or talked to her. How blessed you are!!

Is she going to write anymore Books?

quote:

As for me, the movies are good; get that right---I liked the movies; but I've been really really angry about them taking the name 'Loves Comes Softly' and etc. and Not have give them a different name and say: Adapted from the Novel 'Love Comes Softly' by Janette Oke', because they Are adapted, Not based on the books. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't believe she would willingly let them change the books that much and still carry the original Book Titles. I would have enjoyed the movies a whole lot more; With the original title my mind wants to follow the book, but the movies DON'T follow the books and this drives me crazy. For example, "No more tears" is Not the same as "Remember...., Isaiah 41:10, ..... . "; A Soddy with a dirt floor is not the same as a wooden building, Nor is a Cabin the same as a Spanish Rancho (house after the Soddy); A Horse Ranch is not a Cattle Ranch; Indians are not Spaniards; Willy and Missy never had a baby die; Willy didn't die; Belinda was Marty and Clark's child; and on and on and on. They should have given these movies a different name --- they are two similar story lines but separate stories --- in my way of thinking. Besides, I can personally identify with something from each book, they are real life; I can't identify with the movies, they're just good movies.

I LOVE THOSE BOOKS!!

Pat

Pat, I know what you mean about the movies. I couldn't believe how far from the books the plots are either.

As for the books, I've ordered the last of the books of hers that I can get my hands on. They are currently on their way from the US. I haven't read the children's stories, or her biography as it's now out of print. I'm reading her "Women Of The West" series at the moment, and then just have the "Song Of Acadia" books to read, and then I've read all the books of hers that I can get my hands on. I've passed the books on to others to read too, so they're getting plenty of use.
