Hi Everyone,
This is sad news for many folks who have depended on BJU for overseas classes. They have been my major competition for a number of years now. It is sad to see them go. I currently have students in thirty-six nations and I know that BJU had many more areas of the world covered. I hope that all the MK's out there find a way to get their schooling. We all need to pray for a replacement program.

Actually, the HomeSat signal is only found in North America - and is hard to get outside of the US. Please keep in mind that the total Distance Learning program is NOT going away. They will still offer and keep updating the DVD's, as well as the new hard drives. Many MK students use these two options, although they often buy ahead because shipping is extremely expensive.

This doesn't really affect me since we've never used HomeSat, but I know many others who have. This sentence stuck out to mequote:
The satellite broadcasts of our Distance Learning classes will continue through May 31, 2009. Current subscribers may record all classes that they need and keep the recordings as long as they wish, just paying the current subscription fee for as long as they use the recordings. Are they saying that you'll have to continue to pay your subscription fee even after the satellite feed is gone, just so you can use the recordings you've made? That seems ridiculous to me.

It is silly and there is no way they can monitor that, and they realize that. However, it is in the contract that is signed when people apply for HomeSat. As soon as you are done paying the monthly fee, you are supposed to destroy your tapes. (Or however you recorded it.) I think they would have a lot more people be honest and pay a fee to use them if the fee was more reasonable.
I will say the the powers that be seem to be very out of touch with the homeschool world. Write and let them know what is acceptable and what is just plain outrageous. For instance - the $700 price for the DVD package is a pretty good deal - it includes all the books. (Which run about $500) However, they don't have a payment plan and they don't make exceptions for the books you might already have. Until they fix that, they are going to see sales drop. I think if enough homeschoolers tell them, they might get it.

This is really weird because I have people overseas who tell me that they are using or have used BJU. IN any case, it is a major home schooling resource that is going away. I hope you all do write BJU and express your opinion. I would hate to see the program go away. WOW! $700! I though my science program was overpriced at $200.

They probably use the DVD's or the hard drives - which basically are the same classes, just the recording has already been done for you.
I guess you are not familiar w/ the product - I'm sorry I assumed that. The $700 price is for a whole year of ALL subjects - not just one. (Between 7-9 subjects.) For most grades it also includes Bible AND a foreign language choice. It also includes the books. Individual classes are available for high school and are $399 but you have to remember that that price includes almost $200 worth of books. (Depending on the subject.)

Then you have to give back the DVDs after one school year or pay again, so if you have a child with LDs, it won't be a good deal. If you have a child that learns faster, it won't be a good deal. If you have a child that is more than one year ahead or behind in one their subject, it won't be a good deal. If you don't follow the PS schedule for start/end of school year it may not be a good deal. If you have more than one child it won't be a good deal...

I think the price is $1,000 for elementary, and it's different for high school. K5 is $749 or something like that. And you get the DVDs for 14 months, I believe, so a bit longer than a year.
We plan on using the DVD program if/when we bring my son home again, and also for my 3 year old starting next year with K5. What I need to ask them is if we can pay in February (tax time) and have them shipping in August.

$700 is the deal for the current HomeSat subscribers - sorry that wasn't clear. By all means the best deal is the Hard Drive. It is less expensive because it is less expensive to produce.
The better deal really depends on how many children you have and how many of the books you plan on buying. For a large family, homesat was definitely the way to go - hands down.

I am familiar with the single course product, which is what I thought you were writing about. Sorry, my mistake. I compete with BJU for science students worldwide. Even $399 is expensive. I teach my science class live-feed for approximately $430 or $300 depending on the program and course: Potter's School or Red Wagon Tutorials, respectively.
I also provided a recorded version which includes, Apologia textbook, solutions manual, downloadable video and audio presentations, online multimedia, online notes in two different forms, completed formal experiment reports examples, online test reviews, and online Module and Exam testing with instructor grading for $200. I also sell the same program sans textbook and solutions manual for $150. The student gets one year of program access for this one-time low fee, which should be plenty of time to complete the course. I give the program away (based on need) to 100 missionary families every year. The program is sponsored by Apologia Educational Ministries who I am in partnership with.
Again, I apologize if I was not clear about which BJU program I was referring to. I still think $49 per month or $399 is extreme for a single course, especially if it is returnable DVD.

I agree it really stinks that they are not offering a payment plan or to pay quarterly at least and very expensive when you have 5 kids! and the comment about you can continue to use the tapes you record after they stop the service if you continue to pay "what the heck is that" I understand the point of the contract but that applied while service was being provided right?"
very disappointed about them getting rid of BJU HS and no payment plans on DVD or the computer hardrive I would prefer my kids to be watching on a larger screen than the computer.

When one signs an agreement w/ BJU HomeSat. They agree to not resell or give away the classes. They also agree to destroy any tapes (recordings) within 30 days of discontinuing the monthly subscription.
The started formating the hard drive because people asked for something smaller and more portable. As it is, many children watch their DVD's on laptops.
