I'm currently due with child number three in December (December 24th actually!) I like names that carry a lot of meaning and recently when I was browsing for names, I came across one which means, "the God who hears". Problem? I can't remember what that name was! I've tried looking it up through those search engines that let you look for a name based on the meaning, but I haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know what name has this or a similiar meaning? What influenced you in naming your children? What names did you pick and why?

I named my son Rylan. I liked the sound of it and the fact that it isn't really common.

Mom01--my good friend has a son named Ryland. They are in a conservative Brethren church, and I think it's more common in those communities, for some reason. quote:
What influenced you in naming your children? What names did you pick and why? Well, it was my dh who picked first names, and he says God influenced him. I love the names he picked, though I was a little unsure at the time. Asrat means "tithe". He's our "first fruits". Gebreyesus means "servant of Jesus". Biruk means "blessed". Josiah was thinking of naming him Bireket, which means "blessing" because of all the stupid comments we were getting but eventually stuck with Biruk. I picked middle names, Enoch, Timothy, and David. Partly for their meanings and partly for the Biblical figures. We like Enoch especially and Josiah loves to tell Asrat how his (middle) namesake walked with God and didn't die, but was caught up to heaven.

We use to discuss baby names for fun and this was the only little boy name that we could agree on. I have loved the name Hunter since I was a teenager and working in a daycare. One year I had a little boy in my class who was named Hunter and he was one of the most loving little boys I had met. Just so happens that Hunter was a name my hubby loved as well. His middle name, James is my dad's first name. Ever since I was younger I always wanted my little boy to have my dad's name has his middle name and thank goodness my hubby was fine with that.

Set apart, is your baby a boy? I just wondering because everyone is answering as if that is the case. Anyway, if your baby is a girl, according to SOME sources, Samantha also has the meaning you were looking for. I don't have kids (not married) but I do have many favorite names..I'll list them for you later, but I have to go do other things right now... I will tell you a funny, though. We get the Vision Forum catalog...and they have a set of Beautiful Girlhood dolls (kind of like the same idea as pleasant company with dolls and books, but more christian, and with more obedient girls). Anyway, two of the dolls are named Liberty and Jubilee. Although those two names are COMPLETELY different from what my favorite names have always been, I thought they were kind of neat. Then I thought about someone I know who was a little girl named Justice. Then I thought about if a family had two girls, or a girl and by named Liberty and Justice...then they could name their pet for all, ha, ha, cause it would be too mean to do it to the next child, or what if there last name was something like Forull. Ha Ha, I am silly today.

I named our daughter Israel Grace. I picked Israel from Genesis where Jacob fought with God, prevailed, and his name was changed to Israel. I, too, fought with God. For many years, really my whole life. Looking back I know that I'd been called to Him for such a long time but just wouldn't accept. It was January of this year when I got saved and within three days of that I became pregnant. Like Jacob, I also prevailed, in that I finally submitted to God. I'm not sure if my pregnancy was a coincidence or not, but I know that children are a gift from God... so her name is Israel :) I chose Grace because of the process that took place while I was trying to find God. I went into a bookstore in December and walked straight to the christian section, which was odd for me, seeing as I hated everything and anything that had to do with christians. The colours on the front of a particular book caught my eye and I bought the book. That book was what started my personal path to salvation, and it is called "Captured By Grace" by David Jeremiah. The book taught me that, no matter what I had done in the past, that God had enough grace to handle it.

My son's name is derived from Darius which means "gift". It was chosen because it was a little bit different, had a shortened version I liked (my first choice but his father objected), and I liked the meaning. I actually rejected several names because of the meaning. I also have a horse named "joyful" in Hebrew (was going to name another "angel" in Hebrew, but my son--then 3, was horrified when I suggested it--he had already named her...just hadn't told me.)

Our little boy isn't due for another month and we're keeping the name a secret, but we did have 3 requirements when picking a name. 1. I didn't want to name the baby the same name of any of my former or current students. After 7 years of teaching and about 1,000 kids, that really knocked out a lot of names. 2. My husband didn't want a biblical name. He just graduated from seminary, and while there are some lovely biblical names out there, everyone we know has a son named Josiah and a daughter named Abigail. If we were surrounded by a different crowd of people, it probably wouldn't be a big deal, but in our circle, biblical names are entirely too common. 3. We had to both like the name. This was the hardest one. I tend to like more unusual names and my husband likes traditional names. He also really likes British names, but I wasn't about to name my son Rupert or Clive, no matter how much my husband liked it Once we picked a name, I googled and wikipedia-ed it, to make sure there were no wackos or serial killers with the same name I also googled the initials and various nickname possibilties to make sure there were no obvious jokes lurking behind the name. Kids will make fun of anything, but there's no reason to make it easier for them to come up with a joke
