My 7 month old daughter recently developed cold-like symptoms, including a wheeze. The doctor said it is most likely a mild allergy to a breathed-in substance such as dust, pollen or cat. (Yes we have a cat, but he is not allowed in bedrooms.) He did not recommend any treatment, and skin testing is not possible at this age.

I'm looking for any similar experiences, any advice or tips in assessing or dealing with airborne allergies.

I've already taken a lot of soft dust-collecty stuff out of her nursery, including the rug. And I've dusted & vacuumed thoroughly.

i know what a frustration allergies can be...especially with the little ones. i have a 13 yo dd who suffers from severe allergies - both seasonal and food. one thing that our allergist recommended was to keep all windows shut - at home and in the car. shower/bathe every night to rid the body of the spores, and to keep them from being transferred to bedding. you've already done the removal of things in her room, so thaht should help, too.

you could also consider taking her to a pediatric allergist. i know that testing is not likely to be accurate for a while (my daughter was tested at 2, with results that were inconclusive), but they would have more treatment options. if she gets severe enough to have the need for an otc, i know benadryl is safe...and quite effective. just watch out for the extreme sleepiness (like mine get), or the extreme restlessness (that my friends' children get :o).

hope this might help you in some way...wishing you and your daughter the best

Skin testing is actually possible, DD had it done around that age, maybe slightly older and did react positively to some molds and outdoor allergens. The danger is false negatives, but it doesn't hurt to try.

If you really do think it is the cats then I would eliminate as much of the carpet and cloth as possible from the entire house. Get an air purifier and vacuum once a day.

I can certainly relate, however, I'm not sure my experience will be much help or comfort to you.

My son was 4 months old (just received 4 mo shots) when he got sick with cold like symptoms. He was just starting to get over them when he got his 6 mo shots. The next two years we were at the Dr's an average of 3 times every 2 weeks during the winter, about twice a month in the summer with breathing problems. Since then the visits have dropped off a bit more each year with more visits in winter than in summer. Antibiotics did not help. Cold medicines did not help--except one very expensive prescription med which was later taken off the market. The inhalers/breathing treatments, and other asthma type meds do not work well, and do not help the sinus problems (biggest issue). He is an active child and I refused some of the steroid meds after seeing the effect of a single dose. He has seen two allergists and been tested for allergies twice...once at 18 mo, once at 3 years...always negative. He has been to a ENT...same result as with the allergists. He is put on very expensive medicine that had no or little effect on the symptoms. I have identified some things that are "triggers" of his problems--like smoke. If we walk into a restaurant, and I can smell smoke, we will turn around and leave because the time it would take to eat a meal would have him unable to breath within 24 hours...and it really is a delay. He does not show immediate symptoms when he is in the presence of smoke, it takes time for the effects to be seen. Presuming he is the same with other triggers, this could explain why we don't know every thing that causes problems.

I cannot begin to tell you the number of nights I've sat in bed holding a sleeping infant/toddler/child listening to him struggle to breath saying if it gets any worse, we're going to the emergency room. And a few times we did go to the emergency room.

We also have cats (and dogs and horses) and were told that it was probably the cats...except my son's problems are seasonal and the cats are actually inside more in the summer than the winter...not to mention negative allergy tests.

We wash all bedding regularly, including my son's pillow which is a special pillow for allergy sufferers. We do not use fans in my son's room. We use the more expensive filters in the heat pump and are looking into a hepa air filtration system.

When I was researching dairy allergies and intolerances some symptoms can be cold like and wheezing. I read that everyone's body reacts to things differently.
Is asthma in your family? My Paed said that asthma in the family can be linked to other allergies sometimes too.

Everyone is so different that it's hard to relate our experiences to your own. But if it's any encouragement, my ds had really bad seasonal allergies and sinus infections until he was 3 then he just seemed to grow out of it. The weird thing was that I'd never had allergies in my life. When I was pregnant with him (2nd pregnancy), I got this ridiculous headache that lasted for several days. The doctor told me I could take Tylenol but it wasn't until I took Tylenol sinus - just desperate one day and it was what someone at work had, that it finally just went away. I had no clue what a sinus headache was before that. I say ds gave me allergies. And I think he was born with it. He started teething really young so I attributed it to that for a while. But by the time he was a year old, it was obvious it was more than that. I have a picture of him at Disney world, about 2 1/2 with "the look" - the sinus headache look that anyone with sinus problems recognizes. The look someone gets when every nerve in their face hurts. It was bad. He seemd to outgrow it almost overnight around age three. Beats me. (I still had terrible sinus problems for several years but in the last year or two, it's not been bad even for me. Weird.)

My dd was getting ear infections every two months or so and the doc said it was because of allergies. The fluid was building up and into her ears. He started her on a daily allergy med. It has helped and she has gotten older and may have grown out of it as they sometimes do. My younger dd is showing signs of allergies too so I will start giving her the med too. A 7mo may be too young for allergy meds but keep it in mind if it is still a problem as she ages. I also have allergies, mostly seasonal. I stay in a lot with the air on and vacuum and dust daily. Don't know if this helped or not, just my experience.

I heard if you give a cat vit. E, their dander is decreased, and that can help. Do you give the kitty regular baths? Maybe try that too, every week or two or however often you're able to do it. You may want to double check with a vet, but I've heard of people using Selsun Blue or Head & Shoulders shampoo on their cats to help with the dander. Not sure if that's safe for the kitty though.

My daughter suffered an allergic reaction to a certain brand of disposable diapers. Has anyone else experinced the same thing with their infant. We switched to cloth and had immediate success and no more reactions.
