Baptism is not essential for salvation, but it is an act of obedience. It signifies that you have died to your old nature, and have been resurrected to the new life. There is nothing to be afraid of. If you believe that Jesus was the Son of God, that He died on the cross to pay your sin debt in full, in effect becoming sin on your behalf, (and as He died, your sin died with Him), that He was buried, and rose again the third day (signifying that you have new life in Him), then you are saved. Baptism signifies this transformation in your life to the world, and can be quite exhilarating. It will bring new spiritual strength to you and help to build you up. It will give you a sense of joy from the act of obedience. You cannot be saved by anything that you do. The work that needed to be done was done by Jesus on the cross. If you believe that from your heart, and confess that Jesus is lord, then you are saved.

Zack~
Believe it or not that is a loaded question and they even have a non stop thread about it.
My personal opinio is No you do not have to be Baptized and yet there are many who believe otherwise.
My take is Romans 10:9,13 which states that confessing or calling on the name of the Lord you are saved.
The sinner on the cross next to Jesus in the gospels could not be baptized, Yet Jesus promised him that they would be together in paradise.

Then you have the other side that says:
Well the Eunuch immediately got baptized when he was with Phillip, John the Baptist even Baptized Jesus and Peter also stated for everyone to be Baptized.
So IMHO it is truly a personal conviction if one should.

Baptism is not essential for salvation but if one is saved then it is an outward act of obedience and profession of faith accoding to scripture.

Romans 10: 9-10
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Well, Jesus said you were. See John 3:5.

Go for it! At my church when people get baptized there are photos taken, people clap, The pastor makes a fuss over the person and makes sure that everybody knows your name. It's very encouraging and inspiring.Just think of it as a step toward Jesus. He commands us to do it. So just enjoy the fact of doing what Jesus told you to do.

Zack,
If this is something that the Lord has put on your heart to do, then yes, do it, its a wonderful thing to do, its symbolic and salvation does come before the baptism....but if the rapture takes place tonight, and you havent been baptised, it wont keep you out of heaven my friend. So rest assure, God knows your heart, and if this is something you are wanting to do, and something He has placed upon your heart to do, then He will give you the courage you need to carry through with it.

Baptism is not a particularly arduous process. It involves a bit of ceremony, usually the giving of a brief testimony, and getting wet. If you regularly attend a particular church, why not sit down with the pastor and have a little chat concerning their methods/schedules/etc. for baptism and any concerns you may have. Once you have been baptised, the issue of whether it is necessary for salvation or not is moot and need cause you no further anxiety.

It is, as has been pointed out, a normal Christian practice and a command of Scripture so I encourage you to put it at the top of your "to-do" list. Meantime, God's not in the "gotcha!" game, so if the rapture comes or the sun goes nova before you can follow through you'll be okay. It appears God has brought it to your attention so don't delay, obey!

Baptism does not make a person saved. You can baptise a million people a day and you'll end up with a lot of wet people.

What makes a person saved is them accepting God as their Creator, and Jesus as His only Son who died for us. Accepting the Virgin Birth, the Resurrection, the Trinity and what God teaches us in the Bible.

Don't mis-understand me. This happens often !!! I am not talking against Baptism.

Baptism is a ceremonial, religious event which signifies that an individual has accepted what I said above. I was baptised and would encourage others to do so - if they so feel in their heart.

But per se it is not a condition to being saved or entering Heaven.

In New Testament times, water baptism immediatly followed repenting and accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, usually by only a few minutes or hours. In Acts 2, 3000 people were baptized in a single day; not that difficult since the Temple Mount in Jerusalem had about 1500 mikvah pools for the ceremonial "baptism" of the priests and everyone else who entered to present their offerings.

In times since then, the length of time seperating the 2 events is stretched to days or even several (in my case 9) years. That is not proper or in line with the biblical example. And the issue of whether baptism is salvic or not does not even come up if the 2 events are done at pretty much the same time.

So get baptized already!!!

Definitely not, you do not have to be baptized in order to get to heaven. That has been a controversial sugject. I havent been batpized yet but I plan to, my family has already but I couldnt make it. Its nothing scary all they do is dip you in a pool of water.
