I am in the process of trying to get back into reading The Bible everyday, but I don't want to just read it, I want to study the word.
Can anyone advise on where to start? In the past..I started in Matthew and John...but I would like some other advice..

What I had done a few times was in the morning I read the O.T., and then in the evening I would read the N.T. It broke it up a bit, and I was amazed at how the scriptures correlated from the O.T. to the N.T. as I read it.

I'm currently trying to read through the entire Bible in order - but that's just me.
Pick a book that looks interesting, read the whole thing, and go from there. One of the epistles would probably be a good choice.

Reading the Bible can be just like reading any other book. And you can achieve some level of competence in discussing it. Study can do much the same.
If you are a believer, your Bible is one of the places where you open yourself up to God. It is a place of relational knowing, you Him and He you and then His revealing you to you. (That's awkward but I hope you understand.) So it's more about getting to know God, Who He is, what He is about, and what that has to do with you personally.
So I'd suggest to begin with the NT gospels. And read a psalm each day as well. Sit quietly and ask the Lord to speak to you through His word, to make His word real to you. His word is alive! He will lead you and guide you from there. Bless you!

In regards to how to read the bible, the Catholic church has liturgical calender that has a daily reading of the OT, the NT and a Gospel reading. If you follown the readings everday you will go through the whole bible in three years.
I am telling you this just from a point of view from reading scripture. I am not saying you have to follow their whole belief system or go under a conversion process.

As I said earlier, this is just one idea for daily scripture readings. Not intended to go in a Catholic vs Protestant debate.

I once read the Bible alphabetically. It was weird.

Paul's 'prison epistles', Galatians/Ephesians/Philippians/Colossians plus Philemon presents 'the gospel walked in shoe leather in the first century'.
Try this:
1. The Paul's book of Ephesians has six chapters, perfect for a six day commitment.
2. Set a time(morn, noon, evening, whenever...)but be consistent in what you choose!
3. Read, aloud, a chapter a day(you can read the whole book in about 15 minutes)with the emphasis of Obedience.
4. Rest a day(Sunday? Obedience, worship, service...)
5. Renew your commitment for another six days the next week. Read Ephesians, aloud, a chapter a day(again) only concentrate on Unity.
Any of them will work for all casts their fresh perspective.
Romans is a microcosm reconciling both covenants. If God chose only one book to reveal to us Romans would be it(in some circles.) My personal favorite would be Romans for those reasons and of course Hebrews with a serious nod to the book of Daniel.
