I made a promise to God to fast for 18 hours and pray about the election today. However, I had to take medication that required food and was unable to complete the fast. The medication is required for my medical condition, so I'm not able to skip it.

I've repented of my failure and have asked Him to forgive me. I know about the verses that speak against making vows to God and not performing them, so I hope that He'll forgive me for breaking my promise to Him. I'm still praying about the election and hoping that God will answer my prayers even though I failed Him in this area.

Does anyone have any advice on what I can do about this? Do you think God will forgive me? I don't want to feel responsible if the presidential candidate I voted for doesn't get elected because I failed to keep my promise to God.

If God can forgive murderers and rapists, He most certainly will forgive you for having to take food with your medication. God knew before you even made the vow that you'd have to take the medicine.

Don't fret over it at all.

I don't believe God would have wanted you to promise to fast in the first place, as you have a medical condition that requires medication to be taken with food.

When we have fasts at church, the pastor actually announces that people with health issues who need to take medication should not take part.

All your faith or fasting isn`t going to change God`s mind about who He has already chosen to be your next President. Do you realize that while your praying for McCain to win, there are others around you who are praying for the other guy to win? So if your candidate happens not to win, it`s not because you didn`t have enough faith, or prayed enough, or were unfaithful to your fasting vows. It`s because God tells us in Rom.13:1 "for there is no authority except that which God has established." So whoever wins, remember it`s God who will choose your next President through the democratic process. So your prayer should be that you will find strength to accept the results as from God, be they in your favour or not. As for me, I`m not from your country, so I`m writing today as an innocent bystander. By the way, God has forgiven you. Will you forgive yourself? Just make sure you get out to vote.

If you asked for His forgiveness, He's forgiven you and forgotten it. I suggest you do the same.

And the important thing is to forgive yourself.

There are many who go through life carrying the needless weight of guilt which slows them down and hinders their progress towards God.

As God forgives us. So we too should learn to forgive ourselves.

God bless.

I agree with Mvic, forgive yourself and move on. I had made a promise years ago under duress and the only thing that held me back was my own guilt about not delivering the promise in which God knew I could not keep without Him.
My problm was is that I didn't know how to let go and I fell back and not forward. So I encourage to go forward and know He has forgiven you

Solution: Stop making promises to God. Instead, let your yes be yes and your no be no. Just because you "promise" doesn't make God take it more seriously. The only thing I see that you have to repent of, is thinking that God wanted you to promise Him anything in the first place. If He told you to do it, then you would have had the strength to complete it, I believe. He doesn't give us anything we can't handle it... you couldn't handle it... ergo, He didn't give it to you and you shouldn't have promised it.

Be blessed.

Surely you don't think that the whole election process falls and rises on what you did or didn't do!

God is still in control--in spite of us!

(((Melissa)))

No worries ... when you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, your sins were forgiven ... past, present and future.

That's an awesome thing to consider!

God is so very good!!!!

I don't think God was worrying about it, after all - you were praying for candidate "A", while another Christian or two were praying for candidate "B", and yet another was praying for Canidate "C".

So get over it!

Do you think that God would have wanted you to skip taking your medicine?
Do you think God would've wanted you to get sick?

I suspect that you have the head knowledge that He has forgiven you, do you know it in your heart?

Most of our elected officials are in office because they were voted in. None of them were voted in to punish you.

oh, hon!!! ((((((MYCat)))))) I had to give you a hug!! Hon, of course God understands why you broke your fast. He's not a mean old man who shakes a cane at you b/c you had to take your medicine. He understands. Don't let condemnation push you away from Him. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins (I don't think you sinned in God's eyes though), He is just to forgive us our sins. you're forgiven. And hon, if you voted for McCain and he didn't get in, then that's certainly NOT your fault!!! So don't blame yourself. God LOVES LOVES LOVES LOVES you!!! Embrace His love, it's ok. He's not mad at you. What you need to do know is just love on Him, it's all He wants from you.

Welcome to the club...

The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

(I too take medication that makes me so that I cannot fast, I get sick if I don't eat after about 8 hours.)

Thank you all for your kind words and support. I'm feeling much better, now that you all and God have shown me that I didn't sin in this manner. I also found out that fasting isn't just giving up food entirely. I can fast just one thing, like giving up chocolate or soda pop for a day. I also need to stop making vows and promises to God that I cannot keep.

Again, thanks for helping me resolve this issue. God bless you all!

I fast TV or the computer. i can't fast food b/c I also have a medical condition. Don't make fasting into a law, but into something you want to do.

Melissa - I too made a promise to the Lord many years ago which I failed to keep. The Lord called me to Bible College to study His Word and to 'build His house'.

I completed the first 3 months and then returned home! I felt I had so let the Lord down. Then 2 years later, I re-applied to the same college and was accepted again and once again when the going got tough and certain problems between myself and a few others arose, I allowed the fear of man to once again make me run from the Lord's call! I even remember one of the college staff preaching on Jonah and how he ran away from God's call the day before I too did the same thing (for the second time)! I remember the teacher at college saying that although there was a boat available at the time for Jonah to escape - this did not mean it was the right thing to do! Well, you know a car accidentally plowed into the college wall (the gates were always locked at night and there was a wall around the premises); however, the car made a whole in the wall just big enough for me to escape out off and in the early hours one morning not long after the hole appeared in the wall, I escaped through it and did a runner like Jonah...... and all the time with the thought ringing in my mind that "just because there was a hole in the wall and a means of me escaping did not mean it was the right thing to do!"

I repented of this later but never ever forgave myself until just recently. In fact just within this past week! It has taken me 15 years to forgive myself! 15 years feeling oppressed and of no use to the Lord. I knew in my head that the Lord forgave me but I just could not get that truth down into my heart and that was because I could not forgive myself. It was only whilst studying about the life of Peter a few days ago that the Lord showed me that Peter broke his vows to the Lord too (I wasn't alone after all) and the Lord restored him and Peter the flop became Peter the rock after this. God once again used Peter's life to bring blessing and spread the Gospel. This too gave me hope. God recomissioned Peter and when we fail Him - when we repent - the Lord recommisions us also to continue serving Him.

It is beautiful that you have such a tender conscious and if you confess to the Lord that you didn't think things out very well concerning the fast with regard to your medication situation and that you are sorry for such (as evidently you are), then I believe the Lord will completely understand and forgive you - and you too must forgive yourself. We can waste so much of our lives not being able to forgive ourselves. I know from long experience.
