COLUMBUS, Ohio | A death row inmate scheduled for execution says he is too fat to be put to death.
Richard Cooey faces the death penalty for raping and murdering two women in 1986. He claims that executioners would have trouble finding his veins and that his weight could diminish the effectiveness of one of the lethal injection drugs.
Lawyers for Cooey argue in a federal lawsuit that Cooey — 5-feet-7 and 267 pounds — had poor veins when he faced execution five years ago and the problem has been worsened by weight gain.
The lawsuit, which was filed Friday in federal court, also says prison officials have had difficulty drawing blood from Cooey for medical procedures.
Cooey, 41, is scheduled for execution Oct. 14.
His attorneys also say a drug he is taking for migraine headaches could have created a resistance to thiopental, the drug used to put inmates to sleep before two other lethal drugs are administered.
I thought this was interesting and ironic at the same time. Any other views?

Cooey, 40, was sentenced to die in 1986 for raping and murdering two University of Akron students.
In September 1986, Cooey, then 19, and his accomplice Clint Dickens, 17, abducted, raped and murdered Wendy Offredo, 21 and Dawn McCreery, 20. The women were headed home when Offredo's car was disabled by a rock thrown by Cooey and Dickens from a bridge over Interstate 77 in West Akron.
I am praying for the souls of these girls, and for the consolation and a sense of closure for their families and loved ones.

If they put him on a 1500-1700 calorie diet, he'd lose weight... would that be "cruel and unusual punishment" for a death row in mate?

How does one become obese in prison? Bread and water diet (LOL). Seriously though how?

a congregation member said the man is also on migraine medicine that inhibits the pain killer Ohio gives before the lethal injection. In consideration of the fact that the trial transcript says he beat each of the women close to sixteen times about the head before the acts of torture, rape and strangulation, maybe he needs to know what a REAL BAD HEADACHE feels like

Put him on a very regimented diet 2 meals a day and no snacks. Prune Juice and water. Exercise him 5 hours a day. He will get to the right weight or he'll literally drop dead trying.

My experience with prison chow comes from the times I have been involved with Prison Fellowship seminars and during lunch break we ate with the inmates in the chow hall.
Most prison food is heavy on the starches and the inmates get out one hour per day to exercise. The exercise mostly consists of walking around the prison yard so there is little aerobic exercise. And prison food is truly awfull.

That's true...I don't really wish that on anyone, because at that point...there are no second chances. Hopefully he will get saved.

I read a book about serial killers and it seems that one sued he should not be hung because he was too fat. He was afaraid of...decapitation.

Well what the guy says is true...but who cares? Do I care he is going to suffer a small percent of what his victims suffered? NO.
I believe once you take a life you lose all rights. except the right to die just like your victim/victims did.

I like this nutrition and fitness plan, only one thing is missing. Prisoner eats alone where he can't grab cake from someone else's tray, or rolls, or anything big carbs. Also, make the exercise labor to fix up the prison, not mindless repetitions of weight lifting or such. None of this 'I'm too fat for the injection, too fat for the injection, too fat... yeah."
