Let us use spiritual revelation from Christ Jesus and not mental assent.

We have Christ's example. When confronted with sinners, His attitude was one of love, not hate. He did not ignore a person's sin, but He was willing to reach out to them in love and compassion before expecting them to change. The woman at the well is an obvious example, so is the woman in Luke 7:36-50.
As for "how," I would say we ought to follow Christ's example. We should not ignore the sin around us, but we also should not expect a person to change their sinful ways until after they put their faith in Him. God does not call holy people, but He does make those He calls holy. Or, to paraphrase Christ, it is the sick who need a doctor, not the healthy.

Before going too far, I feel I must point out that "love the sinner, hate the sin" is not actually a NewTestament principle... it is, however a Buddhist one. Now, we can quite obviously see that Jesus did love the sinner while hating their sin (on several accounts, actually), so that is where most of the inspiration is going to come from. Remember,

"Those who are healthy have no need of a doctor, but the sick do."

Adam

I love my son but hate what he does sometimes. If we look at a person through God's eyes ... realizing that we have a sin nature as well, it helps to vision the person apart form the sin. However, that is not to say that we ignore the sin - just as I don't when my son sins. I address the sin and provide support but in the end it is his decision how he will react.

I learned this the hard way. A family member committed a heinous crime. I looked at him on the TV and remembered him as a baby and young boy that we held in our arms. I absolutely hate what he did and he deserves the punishment he received; however, I can still love him as a person. I now pray for those who commit these crimes and their families - remembering that someone may love this person regardless of their guilt.

This made me realize that even the most ugly sin (and of course, degrees are man-made) does not make the person unlovable to God.

Easy - no (after all the sin-nature comes up again), but necessary if we are going to minister and live as Jesus did.

Sin is obviously not lovable, but all people are. We are to love everyone. Period. Jumping down their throats for every mistake they make or bad habit they have isn't love either. Helping someone out of sin is a delicate situation. That's something a lot of people don't understand, I think.

Sin is the spirit and the sinner is the object used. The spirit of evil enters into people and where the spirit is stronger, it leads the person to act the evil. That is exactly what Jesus Christ destroyed for humanity, the evil spirit so that we can through His Holy Spirit bring the evil spirit under control and turn the situation to good for God glory. Therefore, we must never compromise with sin. We must hate sin but not the sinner. We should express love to the sinner through prayers and other godly means to win their hearts to light and liberate them from the stronghold of darkness.

Earthless,

Let us open our hearts to learn from the Holy Spirit and great spiritual revelations would flow through us. Just quoting the Holy Bible is blessing, but to let the Spirit of God speak and move through us is a different level of Spiritual walk in Christ Jesus. My explanation could be confirmed in the Holy Scripture and Jesus Himself expressed these, though in different terms.

I can be angry at a wicked man that does evil to me but I am told to learn how to love him. I can ask for justice but I can also learn to forgive. I am commanded to love my neighbors and bless those that despitefully use me and presecute me. I am thought to love my enemies.

I am not God. I am to hate evil but must be patient with the evil doers even though there is nothing wrong with requiring justice here on earth. There is a time where I believe justice must be served here on earth where I must perform my civic duty take part in the maintainenance of law and order.

Evil doers beware because aside from the justice that can be given to them here, I also have God hating evil doers for me and ready to exact vengeance for me.

Psalm 5:3 My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; In the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up. 4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness. Nor shall evil dwell with You. 5 The boastful shall not stand in Your sight; You hate all workers of iniquity.

That is the main principle in salvation. Love the sinner to enable the power of light to overcome the wicked spirit and bring the sinner to life. Hate the sin nature (spirit), because it is a liar...

This is the context surrounding "the second great commandment" that Yeshua(Jesus) quotes from Lev 19

17 "'Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in his guilt. 18 "'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. "

Incorrect. Jesus says; "Hate what is evil cling to what is good." He also tells us to love our enemies as well as brothers and sisters in Christ. Put them together and you get "hate the sin, not the sinner."

Scary. Non-scriputural - let's also turn out the lights and hold hands.

Hey, what's wrong with holding hands?

One way to hate the sin and not the sinner is to think about the ugliness of the sin and the eternal fate of the sinner. Asaph is Psalm 73 goes through a struggle with hating people who hate God and yet appear to have no trials or worries. Then he sees what he was like in hating them and what they are really like and what their eternal fate is. Asaph also saw (when he went into the sanctuary) how incredibly blessed he was in comparison to them. These help us to pity the Christ-hater. Here we are - secure in Christ, children of God, slaves of righteousness, on our way to eternal bliss. They are slaves to sin, spiritually dead and alienated from the life of God in Christ, without God in the world, and are on their way to an eternity in the lake of fire, and they don't even know it because they choose to remain in ignorance. Its pitiful.

God bless,
Galadriel2
