I had an eating...mishap...yesterday and I think I might have injured my lip. I was having a chip and somehow managed to poke it into my lower lip (on the left inside part) and bite down at the same time. It HURT!!! Anyway, starting last night and throughout today, I've been getting a tingly feeling roughly in the same spot. It doesn't hurt anymore and there isn't a sore or broken skin or anything...just every once in awhile I feel the tingling. Is it possible I caused some nerve damage? WITH A DORITO???

You probably have a bruise and slight swelling. Swelling would cause that tingly feeling. Mouth injuries heal pretty quickly. I wouldn't worry about it.

That's good to know.

I really don't want to be the only person to ever cause irreparable damage with half a tortilla chip.

It depends on which type of Dorito you were eating. Everyone knows that the cool ranch doritos are the best and won't injure your gums

seriously I have probably done it before and I eat a LOT of tortilla chips and doritos.

You could possibly get a canker sore in the spot. They can take a day or so to form.

Mouth injuries DO heal quickly. I sure wouldn't worry about permanent damage.

Yup, it should heal fast. I once bit almost all the way through my bottom lip and it was healed within days. Much faster then any other part of the body.

I'm glad you still have your sense of humor, though, Stellaluna!

If the bruising is apparent from the outside (as, on your skin), you might consider putting some calendula oil or cream on the skin.

You may also want to consider getting some gel that is used when babies are teething. If I ever have a mouth sore (generally ulcer) I tend to use it. It helps with the discomfort.

You've all made me feel better. For the record, it was a Spicy Sweet Chili flavored Dorito. New flavors obviously cannot be trusted!

I think you should sue because they didn't put a health warning on the pack!

Yes, because as you know hot coffee can burn unsuspecting victims.

Who knew a coffee cup needed a warning that said "Don't put this cup between your legs."

Of course, who knew I would need a bag of Doritos to remind me that I need to "Place chips carefully into mouth."

heehee

I thought you might appreciate that.

I've been vacillating several hours on whether to tell you this or not . . . I think I will post it and let you (and others) decide whether to read it or not.

WARNING: EXTREMELY GRAPHIC ALERT

Because of the numerous grand mal seizures I have had, I have severely mangled my tongue on several occasions; and it's always in the same place. I do have some unique indentations (on the sides of my tongue from this; but they are not noticeable unless someone is purposely looking at my tongue while my mouth is wide opened).

Also, I do have a bit of tongue "missing" because of where the wound always occurs.

But considering the number of gran mals that I have had, the part that's missing is very, very mild . . . and again, barely noticeable unless one was intentionally trying to see it.

But then, I don't get many requests for people to look at my tongue.

I say all this, as a weird sort of encouragement . . . to let you know that, as others have pointed out, the insides of our mouths are extremely resilient. Hey, if I can maul my tongue as severely as I have done and have it repeatedly heal itself, your lip is going to heal quite beautifully; I'm very confident of that.

I'm more worried about the smell of a dorito opposed to whether it could harm me.

Smelleth like a dog's foot.

I think you need to get out more, if all you do is sit there sniffing dog's feet! How do you even know what a dog's foot smells like?

I can't say I've ever smelled a dog's foot. And I also can't say what these aggressive chips smelled like. As I said, it was a new flavor.
