Guys,

Is it right to say that oneself is good? Personally, I think that's "boastful" and not according to The Bible. Pharisee was like that and way far from God's consent....

First off, none is good. Even our good works are "filthy rags." (and the actual meaning of that . . . even more descript).

Secondly, and off topic, but think that Christians tend to speak more about "Pharisees" than what is actually given to us. We tend to make them such evils in the world. I don't think it was quite that way . . . But that's for another thread :)

Yup,...the one who proclaims him/ herself good is a HYPOCRITE as far as I'm concerned! May God rebuke such a person (I can't tell who), as ONLY Jesus Christ has the right to do so....Amen.

A truly good and wise person would never breath such a statement.

~Mark 10:18

So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

I think that summed it up pretty well.

I don't know if you were looking for verses. I think most of us here know them, but in case anyone else looks at this thread who doesn't know them, I will post a few.

Romans 3:10

10 As the Scriptures say,

No one is righteous—
not even one.

Psalm 53

1 The fool says in his heart,
"There is no God."
They are corrupt, and their ways are vile;
there is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven
on the sons of men
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.

3 Everyone has turned away,
they have together become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

Isaiah 64

6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Psalm 14(pretty much the same as Psalm 53)

1 The fool says in his heart,
"There is no God."
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good.

2 The LORD looks down from heaven
on the sons of men
to see if there are any who understand,
any who seek God.

3 All have turned aside,
they have together become corrupt;
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

You have to be careful in saying people are no good for the opposite is also wrong for God rebuked Peter when he refused to eat of what he considered unclean animals. God was saying that let no man call what God has created evil. You could say God does not not make rubbish. Hence, in saying all have sinned does not mean that our phsyical existence is in some way evil for we must remember that when God had created it, He said it was good.

Sin is not the physical existence of things for it is the doing and not the being that brings evil. There is then a danger in devaluing God's creation and committing the greater sin of destroying it through our false impression that in some way that because it is evil we are justified in our abuse of it. We could end up treating others with contempt rather than love because of it. That fact that Christ would die for us while we are still sinners then suggests that despite our sins and sinfulness we are worth dying for. We are of some value and of worth to God for we are His off spring. Do not confuse the evil of the off spring with the status of their father.

It boils down to how one views one's salvation; whether you view yourself(or anybody)a sinner 'saved by grace' waiting for something(heaven), a minimalism view, or whether a redeemed soul is a saint of the Most High God and the privilege and responsibility(of obedience/sacrific/opportunity)that entails.

I don't call myself good. The only good that is in me is God. Even when He has filled me completely, I'm still not good, but it is Him in me that is good.

I think that in Christ we can consider ourselves good. It's Christ's goodness, not our own, that makes us good. When God looks at a believer He sees Christ in them. So, from that perspective, yes we are good if Christ is in us.
