When Jack first texted me this morning to tell me they were under lock down I asked why and he said some kid had a hit list. I did not think much of it really because out of 200 kids what are the chances of my son being on it right. Well at the football game tonight I was talking to a friend of mine and we talked about it a little bit. I asked her who was on it and all the kids she named off were in Jacks circle of friends. She asked me if Jack was on it. I told her I did not know so she said well they would have called you last night. Thing is we disconnected our phone last month. The school has both our cell numbers as emergency contacts but I still wonder if they just tried my home phone and gave up. Surely they would have pulled Jack to the side this morning if he was on the list though. I told him how I really wanted to go back to homeschooling but he likes going to school to be with his friends so he begged me not to.

From that article it sounds like they had a meeting with the parents whose kid's names were on the list, so they probably would have contacted you.
Our highschool used to get put on lock down a couple times a month, or we would have bomb threats and end up standing in the snow, inevitably without a coat while the bomb squad swept the building.

If your sons name was on that list, they wouldn't have just called your home number and then given up when they didn't get you. They would have called every number they have on record until they could reach you. It doesn't sound like you need to worry about his name being on the list.
I can understand how frightening it is for you to have this happen at your sons new school. My dad taught at a school that had lockdowns and it's a scary situation. But it sounds like they are dealing with it well and took the right steps to handle it.

We've had them at our public hs as and the christian school we attended. A teen was running through the golf course with a gun accross from the street from the christian school. The school was on lockdown untill they caught the kid. The gun was fake, but who knew. It's a sign of the times. I remember hacing bobm threats every so often back in the 70's and early 80's.

A lot in fact most of the kids on the hit list go to our church so the moms were talking about it. I could not imagine getting that call. I would have told the superintendent that my son would not be back to school. They said that a janitor found the list. It had her mother father, 2 teachers and 14 students to be killed on Nov 14th.
They caught the girl who wrote it. She said she wrote it because she hates school and her parents will not let her quit. Jack says she is harmless. He says she is nice but just a little weird. That kind of makes me nervous since we seem to hear that anytime someone commits a horrible crime. The school is going to remain locked down since she had other people help her write the note.

November 14th was yesterday. Scary thought.
We had our practice lock down drill at our school in the morning as the high school was doing theirs. It was an interesting time....couldn't get in or out of building.

What a scary event for you all to go through! Unfortunately, where I work (in an inner-city middle school) lock downs can happen frequently. Last year, our school experienced 5 lock downs for various reasons ( a drive by shooting, gang activity close to the school, etc). I haven't been through a lock down yet. Last year, I always seemed to be at a location that wasn't experiencing one. We will see what happens this school year.

See I went to a tiny high school out in the country. The most exciting thing that happened was a ranchers cow died while he was on vacation. It was right on the corner as we turned onto the gravel road that took us to the school. It started bloating so we placed bets when it would... well you know. The lunch ladies even got in on it when they handed out our shredded BBQ sandwiches one day. They would put a scoop on our hogie bread saying it was amazing how much meat one bloated cow could make. We all said ewww but we did not take them seriously since the cow was still there. No one ever brought a gun to school. Even here in this day and age the only time a kid ever brought a gun to school was when his dad told him they would go hunting after school. He was so excited he brought his gun with him and had no clue why the staff was so upset.

While I understand that the parents are worried and I would be too, it is more dangerous to move the kids to buses and cars than to keep them secured in the class rooms. When I was working at the school, lockdowns were very serious. Teachers who did not have students in the room patrolled the hall and stood guard at entry points. Those who had students moved them to certain areas of the classrooms and tried to keep them calm, if students had a medical issue and it was safe they were moved to a class that had their emergency meds, etc.

My boys and I had our first lockdown experience shortly after relocating to a new community. And it was for real. I was working in a low-income area notorious for drugs and crime and my kids were at a nearby school in the same district. An armed escaped convict was headed in the direction of the school my kids were at. Not long thereafter he was in the neighborhood of the school I was at. What a warm welcome, huh? ! We recently relocated again and I laughed when we received a big formal letter about an upcoming lockdown drill. We'd been through the real thing a few times!
On the one hand, it's scary and the sad reality of our world. On the other hand, I'd rather schools and students be prepared for such events so everyone can be safe and calm.

Ty said that the next day there were several kids that weren't in school. 
Oy...they searched everyone's cars, including the guys who went straight to school from deer hunting. *sigh* That took a while.
