I would be interested in knowing what people think about Karen Kingsbury. Most people I've heard from think that she is just about the best thing ever. Hmmm...I seldom hesistate to pick up a Kingsbury novel, simply because that lady can tell a story in such a way that you HAVE to know how it turns out! I basically have a love-hate relationship with her books, meaning that I have a hard time putting them down, yet they drive me nuts in so many ways! The emotion is soo drawn out and overdone that it just feels sappy. Like sometimes I just want to roll my eyes. Most of her characters, regardless of how you want to look at it, are pretty much perfect...especially the kids. Kids in Kingsbury novels don't act like real kids; they never do anything wrong, never say anything but sweet things, save for the occasional slip-up that is quickly followed by a realization of wrongdoing and contrite apology. I could go on and on! Does anyone share my sentiment?
Not to say that her novels aren't beneficial or used by God...they definitely are :) but just my personal opinion...

LOL! Your post just confirmed my suspicions, and your reading taste is probably like mine. I've never read one of her books. I've heard lots about her, my MIL just loves her books and recommends them to me. However, I'm extremely picky about the fiction I read and I was hesitant to pick up one of her books for fear of what you stated above. But like you said, that's just personal taste. I'm sure her books are beneficial to many and I won't knock 'em until I've read one.

I like her, but she's a bit fluffy for my taste. I find the plots to be pretty predictable.

I have read and enjoyed ALL her books. However, they sometimes get a bit too predictable/sappy at times. She definitely knows how to tell a story that can't be put down, but the love-hate of her books makes perfect sense to me!
I see what the OP means about the kids being "perfect" but the adult children in the Baxter series definitely make bad and good choices that mirror what I see in my own circle of family and friends!

One of my friends really loves her. I finally broke down and bought one of her books. Do be honest....I've tried to read it about 5 different times and still haven't gotten past page 15..... Its on my shelf collecting dust now, lol. (No offense to her fans.) I might try again sometime. Maybe I should start with a different book.

I read one of her novels, but it didnt want to make me run out and get another one.

I like her, but I wish she'd go a little more in depth. I also wish that she wouldn't spend so much time recapping things from previous novels.
I was pretty disappointed with the end to the Baxter Family series.
As a reunited adoptee, I don't think that she accurately presented what a reunion is like. I've never heard of things going as smoothly as they did when Dayne was reunited with the Baxters.

Agreed, Roberta! nothing goes as smoothly as she portrays in her books -- not even the grieving process.
I'm reading the last Baxter book right now and am kind of flustered by the way Ashley is reacting to her pregnancy...? I don't have much room to talk, seeing as I'm not a mother who has gone through the awful experience of losing a baby, but I would definitely think that in reality, she would be, on some levels, overjoyed by her pregnancy! Of course, the fear and anxiety would be there and be very real, but in the book she is not at all happy about it, and doesn't even want to tell her husband the good news. Just some inevitable thinking out loud that always comes from reading a Kingsbury book -- oh so addicting, but frustrating just the same!

Well it seems as some of you really don't enjoy her books for one reason or another, but I really do. Sappy and Happily Ever After and all. Yes, the kids in the books seem to good to be true, and the smoothness of how the reunion thing went with Dayne, well all I have to say, it's this way because it is FICTION and that is WHY it is fiction, you can have your "perfect, happily ever after moments".
But that is just me.
ETA-she is not the only Christian fiction writer that does this, Lori Wick does it too. I think that is why they are "Christian Romance".

dsisson - I haven't read too much of Lori Wick's books.
I will tell you straight up- I like Karen Kingsbury. A lot! Her books are Christ-centered and clean. She is very talented!
However, that talent is what gets me. I think she could go very deep on some of her topics and still make them entertaining. I don't understand why she doesn't go deeper.

I just got done with the Firstborn series and really liked it. Yes, it was sappy and drawn out at times but overall, I really liked the series and her writing. I will be starting the Sunrise series soon. In fact, I am hoping to get to the library tonight to borrow it for the road trip I am taking.

She's one of my favorites. I know when I pick up one of her books, nothing else is going to get done until it's finished LOL
I have very few authors who do that too me (Francine Rivers is another one)

A relative started me reading Karen Kingsbury and so far, she's my FAVORITE AUTHOR! I've read lots of her books, including the Firstborn and Sunrise series and they are a breath of fresh air compared to the gory sex, violence and profanity found in secular novels. I'd take a clean sappy book over them any day!
I just started reading her newest book, "Every Now ans Then" the third book in the 9-11 series and I'll probably be up late reading it tonight, it's that good.
