My wife is looking for a new digital camera. Her complaint about the one we currently own (even though its less than a year old ) is that the shutter speed is too slow and all the pictures we take of our son end up with his eyes being closed. As a result, she's looking for a new camera... but the one she wants from Canon costs around $600!!!!!!!

I see that price as being way out of line for our budget for a camera that we're going to use to take pictures of our kid. But my wife is dead set on this one because it comes with a fast shutter speed and an editing program (NOTE: We have PhotoShop on our computer, but she won't bother learning how to use it). Does anyone know of a good digital camera that has a fast shutter speed but won't cost me an arm and a leg?

What exactly is she looking to use the camera for? Exactly how fast of a shutter speed does she want? Even your more basic point and shoot cameras have a manual mode that you can adjust the shutter speed up pretty high.

This camera from Canon goes up to 1/1600 how much higher is she looking to go!?

If she is just a casual photographer looking to take snapshots of her kids I would recommend one of Canon's powershots. I am an amateur photographer so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about . The one I liked to is still rather pricey but even one of the A series power shots would be great. I have one as my point and shoot and I love it.

She's just your average joe (or jane in this case) who wants to take cute pictures of our son w/o having him close his eyes when the flash goes off. That's about it. She also wants to be able to edit the pictures, but I can show her how to do most of that on PhotoShopI'll recommend she look at one of the powershots.

I'll also tell her to look at our camera and see if there is a setting to adjust the shutter speeds, too.

EDIT: I just looked on-line at bestbuy.com. This is the camera we have right now:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8791113&type=product&id=1205537513592

According to the specifications page, the shutter speed is around 1/1500 - 1 second. That should be pretty fast, but is it possible that its not set at that speed right now?

This here is (I believe) the camera she now wants: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17316#ModelTechSpecsAct

Alright awesome. I will be honest with you, that camera that she wants is way too complicated for what she wants to use it for. Unless she is looking to get into photography as a profession or at least a serious hobby she does not need a SLR camera. Lol, that camera is very close to what I use at my photo shoots. Honestly you are going to get better photos on a nice point and shoot than with a SLR set to auto. Unless you are going to shoot in manual or at least aperture/shutter speed priority with an SLR all it is is an expensive point and shoot.

Encourage your wife to get out the manual that came with your camera and learn about the manual mode. She will be able to set the ISO speed, the aperture, and the shutter speed to what she likes. If she doesn't know much about these things then www.thepioneerwoman.com has an amazing photography section with really easy to read and follow tutorials on the subject. She has a lot of photoshop tutorials as well that might encourage your wife to give photoshop a try (the editing software that comes with the camera she wants is awful, photoshop is a million times better).

I just looked and the camera you has has ISO settings up to 1600. She could take great pictures with that camera if she learned more about it.

I betting the problem isn't shutter speed, it' shutter lag. That's the time between pushing the shutter relaease and the shutter actually firing. My sister has an Olympus p&s and there's a real problem with lag on that camera. Newer model p&s's have this problem pretty much under control now.

YES! I've commented on that when taking pictures, myself. Cool, so how does one correct this problem?

Would it just be like ChelseaRae said?

Unfortunately, it's a problem across the board. All digital point and shoot (p&s) cameras have it. It's caused by the fact that the same sensor is doing all the work in the p&s, focusing, light metering, image capturing. In a digital SLR, there are separate sensors for each function, so the lag isn't as noticeable. There's still some delay in a dslr, but not as noticeable as in a p&s.
