She's just your average joe (or jane in this case) who wants to take cute pictures of our son w/o having him close his eyes when the flash goes off. That's about it. She also wants to be able to edit the pictures, but I can show her how to do most of that on PhotoShopI'll recommend she look at one of the powershots. I'll also tell her to look at our camera and see if there is a setting to adjust the shutter speeds, too. EDIT: I just looked on-line at bestbuy.com. This is the camera we have right now: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8791113&type=product&id=1205537513592 According to the specifications page, the shutter speed is around 1/1500 - 1 second. That should be pretty fast, but is it possible that its not set at that speed right now? This here is (I believe) the camera she now wants: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17316#ModelTechSpecsAct

I betting the problem isn't shutter speed, it' shutter lag. That's the time between pushing the shutter relaease and the shutter actually firing. My sister has an Olympus p&s and there's a real problem with lag on that camera. Newer model p&s's have this problem pretty much under control now.

I've commented on that when taking pictures, myself. Cool, so how does one correct this problem? Would it just be like ChelseaRae said?

Unfortunately, it's a problem across the board. All digital point and shoot (p&s) cameras have it. It's caused by the fact that the same sensor is doing all the work in the p&s, focusing, light metering, image capturing. In a digital SLR, there are separate sensors for each function, so the lag isn't as noticeable. There's still some delay in a dslr, but not as noticeable as in a p&s.
