The beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses is that only 144,000 people are going to heaven where Jesus is and the rest of us (the righteous) are going to inherit the earth.

This isn't true.... This is a literal interpretation of a number that would have a different meaning to a Jew or someone versed in the type of symbolism used in Scripture. By literally interpreting it, the JW are completely missing the point...par for the course for them in my book...

ORIGINAL: restored08 The beliefs of the Jehovah's Witnesses is that only 144,000 people are going to heaven where Jesus is and the rest of us (the righteous) are going to inherit the earth. So the righteous are going to inherit the earth, so if that is true what does that make the first chosen? are not they righteous, counted blameless? Their doctrine still does not make sense. This is not the way they used to teach it, it has been altered from the way it was taught. For I even had this ? if only 144,000 are going to heaven, and TS russell started this religion back late 1800's. I would think that over 144,000 have already, past tense joined. So it would be ludricrous fro me or anyone else to join. It has gt to be too late for me now. Also, when I was nine or years of age, there was a knock on our door and when I answered it. The two ladies at tthe door said to me. Did you know that only 144,000 are going to heaven? I said well then that is not true. They looked at me bewidered, and I said because I am 144,001, andthen I shut the door. I went into the bible and read how John had seen first the first chosen, then a multitude of others. Anyway, JW's now knowing these two things had to change their doctrine. They need followers, all denominations need followers. I follow christ, seeking not to be deceived, by any group. For Christ is one, with The Father and Holy Spirit. ineffable love

The funny thing is...I'm not sure that the 144,000 in fact ever make it to Heaven as such. They will stay on earth in bodies of flesh and not be included in a taking away at the end of the age. They will dwell on earth in fleshly bodies during the millennium. They will of course inherit glorified bodies at the end of the millennium and their home will be the New Heaven and earth…in other words earth will forever be their home. Bob

No, it isn't true. Good thing, too--because the 144,000 are male virgins: quote:
Revelation 14:4These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they kept themselves pure. That leaves out a whole lot of people, including St. Peter....

Actually, the 144K have a specific purpose in the Great Tribulation. That is to spread this gospel throughout the earth [one last time], and then the end will come. These 144K will be responsible for bringing countless thousands to Christ (i.e the number which no man could count, as seen and revealed by the Apostle John). Read Revelation closely, and don't stop until you see this "number without count" that I just mentioned.

Yeah...Some of them came by the house the other day. I was not home and my wife would not let them in. Shoot!!! I did hear on the radio that they have 8,000 slots still open. How depressing! The elect get the free pass and everyone else has to work his buns off and then there is still no guarantee. No wonder their suicide and mental illness rates are so high. quote:

I suppose that if the number of "saved" were literally 144,000, then you also have to believe the literalness of this as well: 1) That Jesus doesn't have eyes, but fireballs; brass feet that get manicured in a furnace, a voice that babbles like a brook and a tongue that is the envy of blacksmiths everywhere (Rev. 1:14-16). 2) People worship a farm animal in heaven (Rev. 5:8) 3) The author of the book of Revelation finds books a delicacy (Rev. 10:9,10) 4) Fire-breathing Olive Trees (Rev. 11:4,5) 5) Dungeons and Dragons isn't just fantasy (Rev. 12) 6) Godzilla and Gamera are real (Rev. 13) 7) God likes vintage wines, Freddy Krueger style (Rev. 14:17-20) 8) God throws Tupperware parties (Rev. 16) 9) God marries items He met at a Jewelry store (Rev. 21:9-21) Let the Jehovah's Witnesses have their exclusive number of "saved" in heaven; they can have these absurdities too!!

. Here is a quote from the tract called "More Stumpers for the Jehovah's Witnesses", at: http://www.catholic.com/library/More_Stumpers_for_Jehovah_Wit.asp quote:
5. Is Heaven Just for the "Anointed Class"? The WTS teaches that only the anointed 144,000 seen in Revelation 7 will enter heaven (the "anointed class"), while the remainder that are not annihilated (the "other sheep") will live forever on earth in paradise. However, the Bible poses some irreconcilable difficulties with this idea. If Revelation 7 is to be taken literally, there would only be 144,000 Jewish male virgins taken from a square shaped earth that are now in heaven worshipping a sheep. This would mean that Peter (not a virgin), the Blessed Mother (not a male), and Charles Taze Russell (not a Jew) could not be in heaven. Reading one number literally while taking the rest of a book symbolically is not sound exegesis. Beyond this, we see in Revelation 14 that the 144,000 stand before the 24 elders from Revelation 4:4. This at least brings the grand total to 144,024 people. But, the Scriptures indicate that there are still more to come. Revelation 7:9 speaks of a countless multitude before the throne, which is in heaven (Rev. 14:2-3). Still in the book of Revelation, we read that all those with their name in the book of life are in heaven (Rev. 21:27), while all whose names are not in the book of life are thrown into the pool of fire (Rev. 20:15). There is no third "earthly" class. Jesus reiterates this, and never speaks of two flocks. He has one bride, whose "reward is great in heaven" (Luke 6:23). Paul even exhorts the Christian community, calling them to remember, "As for us, our citizenship exists in the heavens" (Phil. 3:20). The JWs attempt to use verses such as Psalms 37:29 as evidence that the just are to inherit the land forever, which is earth. In context, this refers to inheriting the promised land as a sign of God’s blessing in the Old Testament. But, Hebrews 11:8-16 indicates that there is a homeland better than the promised land on earth, and this is the heavenly one for those who die in faith. The Old Testament patriarchs "publicly declared that they were strangers and temporary residents in the land . . . they are earnestly seeking a place of their own. . . . But now they are reaching out for a better [place], that is, one belonging to heaven. . . . God . . . has made a city ready for them. . . .These [OT men and women] did not get the [fulfillment of the] promise . . . as God foresaw something better for us" (Heb. 11:13-16,39-40). Even the footnote of the NWT makes clear that the "city" spoken of in these verses is the heavenly Jerusalem mentioned in Hebrews 12:22 and Revelation 21:2. But, the Watchtower still maintains that no one that lived before Christ will ever enter heaven. "The apostle Paul in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews names a long list of faithful men who died before the crucifixion of the Lord. . . . These can never be a part of the heavenly class" (Millions Now Living, p. 89). Only the 144,000 elite that all lived after the death of Christ will supposedly go to heaven. Matthew 8:11-12 provides severe difficulties for this idea, since Jesus proclaims, "many from eastern parts and western parts will come and recline at the table with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens; whereas the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the darkness outside. There is where [their] weeping and the gnashing of [their] teeth will be." No verse could be clearer in declaring that the patriarchs are in heaven. The following verses all demonstrate that Christians go to heaven, and do not remain on earth: 2 Corinthians 5:1; Hebrews 3:1; Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 1:4-5; 1 Peter 1:4. .

No. Revelation tells us that the 144,000 are the 12 tribes of Israel. So the JW's are making up their own bible.

They must believe that they will inherit paradise in the new earth, then, for no one would join this group otherwise. quote:

I bet that you watch a lot of TV and Movies, though. No images, there, that are lifelike, either. Absolutely no diversity in the amounts of creation; at all! So perceptive of some to know this and then deny The Truth! quote:
