What would be a polite way to ask coworkers to stop constantly discussing their obsessions over their pets?
All day long I listen to coworkers discussing health issues of their pets and what they have tried, and what others have suggested they try, and asking even more what to do about their pets picky eating habits, their pets skin issues, their pets playing habits, their pets fear of storms, their constant worry about leaving their pets home alone all day, poor pet this, poor pet that, poor pet obsession fever. I am ready to scream!
These people discuss their pets more than people who have kids discuss their kids.
If I ever get a pet, I will never mention it to my coworkers because they would want to discuss it all day long and I'd never get any work done.

If it weren't pets it would be something else. It is something they have in common, so it's natural that they are discussing it. Is their chatter keeping you from doing your job?

Yes, it's very disruptive, and keeps me from being able to focus on my work. They stand near my desk, sometimes leaning on the ledge, having these discussions.

Then it isn't the pets, really, that is bothering you (it's rudeness!), and you simply need to say, 'I am sorry, but I cannot concentrate when you are chit-chatting in my office or sitting on my desk. Would you mind taking that to the break room?'

Yes like Jenny-Fair said...if not their pets which sounds like thier children...it would be something else...also a conversation in which you are not a part of (unable to relate to) simply ask them if they could move their conversations elsewhere because you are not able to concentrate on work that is needed to get done...They should be able to understand...

I love my cat. But I don't talk about her all the time. Because it would get really annoying if someone did that to me. I hardly talk about her actually with friends.
In my work environment, it won't really affect anyone though. I work at a daycare, so we hear a lot of the same stories over and over and over. But still, I wouldn't talk about my cat 24/7.

Sorry Jess, I would probably irk you a little. I am a pet person, I have three dogs who I love to death, they are the best things I have bought. I do talk about them at work sometimes, but I try to curb it. Most of the time, it's with people who are pet people as well. For some people their pets are very important because that's all they have in their life so they talk about them because they are part of their family. Sometimes, it replaces the place of children if they don't have them.
I do understand what you are talking about because there are people who beat my ear up all day about their pregnancy, their kids, their husbands. I think anything talk about in excess is too much!

When I worked at the concrete company, every single person in the room was obsessed with that deadliest catch show. It was very annoying, lol. And so...pointless. I would rather hear about their pets!

The discussion turned to the topic of their respective pets' BMs.  I asked them to PLEASE take their discussion elsewhere. I would much rather have heard them talking about the deadliest catch show.
