As much as I would like to keep them there, I am giving serious consideration to putting our kids (1st and 3rd graders) in public school. They currently attend our church's school, but doing so is becoming a financial strain, especially since I am the only wage-earner in the house. The school itself is excellent and all, but it's also another bill.

Does the school offer any sort of scholarships or financial aid?

I don't really have any better suggestions except to pray abou it. It's so hard, I know. Last spring, it really looked like dh might get laid off. Of all the possible ramifications and problems that would've come with that, and we would've been in big trouble if he'd been out of work any length of time, the thought of pulling them out of their school horrified me. I have a friend who does a co-op kind of school where her dd goes to school 2x/week and she homeschools 2x/week with the lesson plans given to her by the teacher. It's a neat idea and costs a fraction (about 1/3) of what my kids' school costs. Of course I'm home to be able to do those two days off where you're probably not. But that was my plan if worse came to worse. We prayed about it and he didn't get laid off but, through a friend at school, found a new job instead.

Pray about it, I just don't know. Maybe He'll make a way or maybe there's another option you've not thought of yet.

Sometimes it depends on the district because, at least in my experience, my kids are actually in better schools in their public schools than in the private schools in our area.

Our school district is very much up there on the national level and offers programs for my kids that they only dream about in the private schools. Unless we wanted to send our kids to the elite private school in our area that costs 35K a year EACH KID! 70K a year is too steep for me!

Nowadays you can check out the schools in your area by looking up their SARC (School Accountability Report Card). Their API score from year to year will show if the school is doing well. Hopefully, it will be above 800 or close and showing a yearly improvement.

I went from private to public for personal reasons. Cost was not the issue, but there were others. I love the choices we made and I don't think things could have worked out any better.
