Ok, so I know it's because I'm mostly barefoot in the summer, but on the soles of my feet, mostly on the big toe pad and the pad below the big toe the skin is peeling back just like little nicks. It's really annoying. What can I do for this? I try lotion, but then I slip around in my shoes. I don't really want to wear socks, I'm not enough as it is. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, mine do that sometimes. I use a pumice stone and use it as soon as I get out of the shower, then apply some heavy-duty moisturizer (like shea butter or something, it absorbs quickly when just out of the shower). It helps a lot.

Oooh, yes, the pumice stone! It's my best friend! It's one thing that I consider to be an absolute essential and really panic if I can't find it!

If the nicks are of a cuttable length, ie they catch more, I tend to just gently trim them with nail clippers.

And I apply moisturiser last thing at night, or if I am going to be sitting with my feet up for an hour or two (which doesn't happen often!), so that it has time to sink in.

Kathryn, have you had your thyroid checked? Apparently that can cause skin issues on your feet.

I have parts of my big toe and the ball of my foot that large chunks peel back. My Esthetician asked if I had thyroid problems, because it looks like I have "thyroid feet" and told me that the bottom of my feet looks like my aunt's feet.

I actually don't have thyroid problems (yet) though everyone in my family does...my mom, all of my aunts, my uncles, cousins, my grandmother, etc. So it's around the corner I'm sure.

Yolanda, really? That's interesting, never heard of that. No they aren't big chunks, just little pieces, almost the size of a hangnail or something like that. My mom does have thyroid issues, but the last time mine was checked it was ok. But that is something worth keeping in the back of my mind. Hmm.

I'm glad you mentioned the thyroid thing, Yolanda. Though I had my dry skin issue long before I was diagnosed hypothyroid.

Yolanda, when was the last time you were checked? If your TSH was above 3.0 then you could be hypothyroid now (many doctors say above 5.0, but more modern specialist thinking says above 3.0).

Kathryn, how long ago was yours checked? Bear in mind that pregnancy puts a strain on your thyroid. It was my 2nd pregnancy that caused my thyroid to pack up. I was diagnosed when my dd was about 4-5 months old. If I was you I'd be asking to have my thyroid function checked now just in case, because mum having an underactive thyroid can affect the unborn baby.

Um, 3 years ago for sure. If it was checked at other times without my knowledge, I don't know about it. I really don't think I have a thyroid problem, I don't have any of the other symptoms. In fact I have energy and I'm even pregnant! Before I got pregnant my cycles were normal, I'm not intolerant of cold. The peeling on my feet is just a few 'hangnails' I'll call them. Not long, not big and not a lot. And I never have this problem in the winter. I just think it's because my feet are dry.

Yolanda I can't get that pic.

THe skin on my feet do that too. Klay said it looked like athlete's foot, but I dont think it is.
I attributed mine to my eczema and super dry skin. Nothing helps...so I have no advice.

I sometimes get that, and it is cured by putting antifungal on it. So, I think it is athlete's foot for me, when it happens. Plus, the fastest way for me to get rid of it is to wear socks/shoes for a couple of days.

I read once (and believe) that it can also be caused by ovary problems (which I have).

I have the small, hangnail-sized ones -- not as big as yours, Yolanda (too funny -- your toes are famous on the Internet now!)....

If I can ever find the link talking about feet re: ovaries I will let you know.

Mine only show up if I'm barefoot for too long. I'll try moisterizer tonight.

I have that too, but it's pretty much because I have dry skin and callouses from the fact that I've gone barefoot as much as I can get away with it since I was a little kid.

The best way to help it heal is to wear socks with vaseline or bag balm on the affected areas. If you don't want to do it during the day (I don't either), then just slather them up and put socks on for the night.
