For them to be instructed to baptize presumes that they themselves had been baptized. The ritual of washing goes back to the priests' ordination, and nobody could initiate another person unless he had been initiated. Arguably, the only person who was exempt was Moses. How was he initiated? His name means "to be drawn out" -- The story of him being drawn as an infant from the Nile serves as his baptism. The baptism of the people passing through the Red Sea was the initiation of the nation, not the individual taking on a new life. It is a picture of baptism, but was not the cleansing of the individual later described. Back to the OP -- For the 12 to baptize others, they themselves had to have been baptized.

I believe that they would be. Christ was baptized, Paul was baptized - and they baptized others. Act 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. Act 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Mar 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Jhn 4:1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John. 2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) (Ananias to Saul/Paul) Act 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Well, of course, it seems logical to think that they were. However, God must not think it's important for us to know; otherwise, Scripture would clearly tell us if they had.

Well, EllieMae, I rarely disagree with you, so will I be forgiven for this? I think it is important that we know that they all were baptized, and I think that G-d finds it important that we know that. Admittedly, I see it from a different perspective than those brought up by most here, but this is what I intend: The final twelve-plus-one were obedient to the L-rd, as demonstrated by the Scriptures. They were Jews reared in the Jewish understanding of Scriptures (see Doug Horton's post #3 above, especially). The Scriptures say that Messiah's followers must be baptized. Therefore, it is not a simple logical conclusion that they were baptized; it is an understanding that they were baptized, because the Word is true.

Act 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. I am relatively certain that Peter was speaking from experience, and walked the talk.
