I'm reading Jung Chang's Wild Swans right now about her own life under the cultural revolution, her mother's life under Japanese occupation and the rise of the communist party, and her grandmother's life under the warlords that arose after Sun Yat-sen died. A very interesting book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the 'real' story of China over the last century. Because of her mother and father's place under the Communist party she was able to know many political details and motivations that are not available in similar memoirs such as My Several Worlds by Pearl S. Buck (who I do prefer earlier in the century), Red Scarf Girl, or Legacies: a Chinese Mosaic by Bette Bao Lord. Does anyone else like historical autobiography? Any you'd like to share?
