I ask this because I used to have a (very cute) very short hairstyle. Most people I knew thought it looked good on me, as did I. I found, though, that on a few occasions it led people to ask open ended questions that lied me to believe they were feeling out the possibility that I was a lesbian.

I realize on a site like this most of the answers are probably going to be that men prefer long hair on women ... but I was just curious about some of the reasoning for that. And of course I'd love to hear from those who like short hair too!

For now - the long hair is staying. I promised myself that I wouldn't do anything drastic until it is as least long enough to donate what I cut off. But it is getting to the point that when I sit down, it gets between my back and the chair and is a bit annoying. Little things like that add up and eventually I decide to cut it, he he - it's been a cycle all my life.

Hair is hair.

Now, I can't say this too loudly (as I am a married man), but I see women who have both extremely short and then those who have extremely long hair who are attractive.

My wife has gone from extremely long hair to shorter just off the shoulder hair. She still looks as good as ever!

What was the question again?

To me the length is not so important as having an up to date style that fits your face. IMHO, a really short "butch" or bowl cut doesn't even look good on boys. A good stylist cost $$$, and is so worth it to look your best.

Ah, the hair thing again. Well, my wife has taken a short hairstyle to dizzying, stratospheric heights of cuteness, so I think short hair rocks. But that's not what's important. What's important is what makes YOU feel attractive and what makes YOU feel comfortable with yourself. That makes all the difference. Don't let some fellow you haven't even met yet control your world.

P.S. Anyone who translates short hair automatically into Lesbianism is a bullet you just dodged. Pat yourself on the back.

I prefer long hair but I don't mind short hair. It depends on how short however. If it is like Schenade O'Connor short that is too much but again it depends on the woman.

I will admit that depending on the style of the short hair I might also wonder if a woman is a lesbian. Especially if she was the baggy jeans, t-shirt and boots type.

What style in particular might indicate that a woman is a lesbian?

Just curious in how this thinking process goes...

In general, I prefer long dark hair on a woman. That is in general. Not for everyone.

On some women, short hair just works better, given their facial structure.

I would never think of someone's orientation just because of their hair length. Had too much of that junk with the long haired guys back in the 60s and 70s.

Picksy hair cut. Usually length is close to the ears and spiked especially in the front. That is a typical lesbian cut from what I have seen.

Maybe I just have never seen a typical lesbian. Now I have seen that cut on a sister here at work. She has 4 children and is definitely not a lesbian.

[edited to make it clear that the sister I refer to is not defiant! ]

Length per se is not really a concern with me. However, I don't especially find extremes, long or short, attractive - like if its a boyish cut (ugh!). If its cut nice and it fits your face then its fine by me

I agree with Dave and AJ that it depends on your face.

The style is important, too. There are good and bad long and short styles WRT any particular face.

I remember those short cuts in the late 1980s and early 1990s that made women's heads look like inverted shaving brushes. Chia Pet on crack. Straight up in the center, almost buzzed on the sides. And why was it mostly the middle-aged, (*ahem*) "matronly" women who had them? "No, that will not make you look like Aimee Mann but I'll bet you're from Russia and have switchblades in the toes of your clunky black shoes."

Long hair adds to the beauty of a woman, not that short hair isn't attractive. It is just that women with long hair are more attractive instead.

It depends on the shape of a person's face, their personality, and their age. I think some women look much older if they wear really long straight hair, but on the other hand some look beautiful.

So hair by itself does not make one attractive or not. I most definitely would not judge someone's sexual orientation based on any hairstyle.

For the longest time I was only attracted to women with long hair. I preferred mostly blondes but I did find myself admiring those with dark hair. Things changed for me when I met this one girl. She had short stylish hair but it was so fitting to her face:) Simply beautiful!

Since then I've found myself more open to women with different hairstyles. As long as it promotes female beauty I'm all for it.

I feel MUCH more stylish with short hair than long, and honestly the long has come with its share of hinderance (migraines, killing the vaccum, etc).

I tend to want to change it whenever it has been one way or the other for too long. I had a spunky, layered roughly chin-length cut a year and a half ago - now it is halfway down my back (it grows super fast). But I'm feeling the haircut bug ...

But I made a promise to myself not to cut it until it is long ehough to donate. :)

I was just curious- the style of dress probably didn't help at that time - I was having some self esteem issues. I dress in a more feminine and cute way now though. It seemed it usually happened when I was doing something like helping a friend shop for cars (salesman lashed out because I knew more about them than him I guess), when I turned someone down when out with some friends (guess he didn't take rejection well).

You're right - I DID dodge a bullet, ha ha!

I used to think that I was "more attracted" to long hair, but honestly, it doesn't really matter to me.
I have learned that long hair doesn't work for all women.
(just like short hair doesn't work for every woman either)

I, too, prefer long hair, but a short style can look dazzling on a young lady if it's done right. Don't worry about the naysayers, if you feel beautiful with that style, go for it.

If you like your short hair style I would recommend keeping it and not let others comments sway you, unless they're constructive. I personally do not have a preference, some women look great with short hair (and still feminine looking) and others with long.

i'd also add that if you've had the same hair style for many years to maybe discuss the matter with some friends or hair stylist ... maybe it's not the most flattering or stylish for you now (maybe it used to be) ... i'm talking singles here ... just another step we can take to possibly make ourselves more attractive ...

I know you just mean that she should listen to herself before anyone else and not keep her hair long for just anyone, but as a guy who greatly prefers long hair on almost any woman the way you phrased this is offensive. Maybe an edit is in order.

Thanks
