Do you often get called in on your day off work? What conditions do you feel justifies being called in?

VERY rarely. We usually have at least two people here who can do the most improtant duties. The only time I would theoretically get called in would be if it was a weekend and someone was ill and the other person would be alone. Even then, I'd be last on the list, since I am an hour away... and people have worked alone before.

So, it is hard for me to answer that. IMO, it is fair if someone has an illness or emergency only.

My mother in law was just commenting the other day that even though she was out of town for two weeks (on her annual vacation, booked MONTHS ahead of leaving), her one son was called at least 4 days each week to see if she was home yet and could she cover such and such shift ... umm -- NO! She's on VACATION ... in another city!!!

This regularly happens to her on her days off ... she now doesn't answer the phone before a certain time of day because of it. If it was a once in a while thing, that'd be okay, but when it occurs nearly every time she has a day off ...

(And in the not answering before a certain time ... the answering machine always picks up, so if it was a real emergency or some other situation, she would hear the message being left -- such as her beloved daughter-in-law going into labour ...)

I am called in at least once a month...sometimes more often...and even more frequently I end up staying hours late to finish something. (recently got to work at 7am, found out something had come up...I left the next morning after 8am). The number of times I am called in or have to work late should start to drop, even though we are doing increasing amounts of work (first 6 months of this year we did more than in the entire year prior...our division has been in existence for 2 years), be cause we have finally hired more people...now instead of having 2, we have 5 with more coming. We also have "scheduled" overtime--times when we know we have a major project or the work load/schedule requires someone come in on weekends or evenings.

I don't get called unless it is really something important--either something new has popped up or something significant has happened with an existing event, so I don't put conditions on coming in. Now I might refuse to schedule something that will require weekend work, but I'm not going to refuse to support something that has happened unexpectedly...this has at times required a significant "adjustment" to my plans and schedule...

I agree it can be VERY annoying. A true emergency is one thing, but making it a habit is enuff to make you say grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I do but not very often at all. My DF though has gotten called in a lot because of unreliable workers. Since changing employers (doing the same job just different employer) he has gotten called in and asked only once or twice. He is trying to make a good impression and work his way up so he doesn't mind unless he really can't. Like I was on a date with him and he said no.

Heck yeah, all of the time. My boss is such a slave driver, she'll even kick me out of the bed at 7 AM on Saturdays.
Gotta love a family business.

I have had that happen to me and have said I have made other plans, which I have. At times, it is not justifiable.

If I were already out on a date with my wife I wouldn't even bother answering the call.

Never ever.

Though, while on vacations lasting more than a couple of days, I do keep up with projects that are at a printer or other outside vendor (but, that's ME choosing to do so....so I can rest easy that all is going well with the projects I am responsible for)....

My assistant and department head DO have my cell phone number and personal e-mail address in case something comes up when I am on vacation.....and, I don't think they've ever needed to use either in the 4+ years I have worked here.
