The Word of God teaches us that if someone has done us wrong and asks for our forgiveness - we are to forgive them. Also, the Word of God teaches us that we are to forgive those who sin against us whether they ask our forgiveness or not (i.e. unconditionally). However, both the above examples are different from atoning for another's sinful actions. Only Jesus can do this because he shed His blood at Calvary to atone for our sins. Atonement goes much deeper than forgiveness. Also, no man can sanctify nor justify another - only Jesus.

A very serious issue for Christians; (Mar 11:25) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. (Mar 11:26) But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. If a Christian wants God to forgive them they must forgive others. Thanks RC

The answer is YES! You need to forgive people just as Christ has forgiven you. I have a LOT of unforgiveness in my life and someone on here told me that if you think about a person that has hurt you, just say "I forgive you." outloud or in your head. Even if you don't believe it. And with that, the Holy spirit is going to work on you. FOr example, I have a LOT of unforgiveness against my Dad. And today, I kept thinking about the things he used to do. And I kept saying, "I forgive you" repeatedly. You NEED to forgive others. It's hard and it's going to take a LOT of work though! But God will help you with this!!

I think there is a verse where Christ said that we should forgive others, 77 times 7. Of course this is just a figure of speech meaning that we should always forgive everyone all the time. Sometimes the person who you haven't forgiven has moved on and doesn't care about you or what happened. Then you are harboring this negative attitude that is only really hurting yourself. God doesn't desire for you to be in that misery. So yea, always forgive, no matter what. Think of it this way, God has always forgiven us every single time. There is nothing that anyone has ever done to you that is worse than what you have done to God. Yet God still forgives you every time. We should strive to be that loving. God bless you in the name of Jesus Christ

ORIGINAL: mand1986 God loves us all and so he forgave us all for our sins, please could anyone tell me if christians are supposed to forgive people for their sins? We cannot forgive anothers sins, but we can forgive those who have sinned against us. We are able to forgive because we have been forgiven. Under Judaism it is forgive to get forgiven, under Grace it is forgive as you have been forgiven yourself. Colossians 3:13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Peace

We can ask for their forgiveness, but it is Christ who does the forgiving. an example is when Jesus was on the cross and said: Father forgive them,( He didn't say I forgive them.) for they know not what they do. Also it states we are to ask forgiveness, so the Heavenly Father will forgive us of our sins. CRH

For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matt 6:14 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us Luke 11:4 So watch yourselves. "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, 'I repent,' forgive him." Luke 17:3,4 If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." John 20:23 For those who say we can't forgive people of thier sins, please read the passages from Jesus, who clearly stated that we can forgive someone their sins and that we need to do so. Jesus also sternly warned us that if we refuse to forgive someone, we place ourselves in great danger of not being forgiven by God the Father Matt 18:23-35 23"Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. 24As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents[g] was brought to him. 25Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. 26"The servant fell on his knees before him. 'Be patient with me,' he begged, 'and I will pay back everything.' 27The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. 28"But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.[h] He grabbed him and began to choke him. 'Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded. 29"His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, 'Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.' 30"But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. 31When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened. 32"Then the master called the servant in. 'You wicked servant,' he said, 'I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. 33Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?' 34In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." Sometimes forgiveness is hard, especially when that person has sinned against us horribly, but if you want to be like Jesus and to walk in the truth, He will help you with the issue of forgiving that person. 2 missionaries just return to the city in which I live after they had been brutally attacked in Africa by people with machetes. These 2 people were cut up very badly, had bones chopped amongst other terrifying things. Though barely alive, they have expressed forgiveness to thier attackers and plan to return to that country when they recover to express this forgiveness personally. Personally, I couldn't imagine the strength to forgive, but obviously the love of Christ is working through them. I can't say that I am perfect in this area of forgiveness either, but I'm working on it. Christ has commanded it
