Jen, I do think that may be part of the point. In 1Cor. 11 it says her hair is her pride. I know that is definetely true for me. I really like my hair.

quote:
I got one of my husband's bandanas and tied it on my head and just looked in the mirror. My 1st thought was, boy are you unattractive. I have one of my husbands bandannas on my head right now and I don't look attractive in it. Though, when I have one of my own girlie ones, or a scarve which is what I usually wear, I feel attractive as a Godly woman. Try a few other coverings! As for what husbands think - it's funny because one woman at my church always remarks (in a nice way) how I'm taking on my husbands culture when I completely wrap up my hair in a scarf instead of keeping hair out of the back - though he hasn't said anything, I think my husband likes that. And on the subject of gangs - it's actually something that keeps me from covering when I go out. Our neighbourhood is split in two and gangs are prevalent in one area (not where I live but where we use the pool and library and stuff). It's safer for me to not cover my head at all when I go out, as I have to be cautious about the colours I wear and my house covering is red. That's why I'm looking into getting a covering similar to what some Muslim women wear so it is recognized as a religious headcovering.

you can also go with lace coverings.....they are recognized as religious coverings and do not have any connotation with gangs.

I scanned through the replies, and did not find anything that touched on some issues that I have with the passage, which is below from the New King James Version. 1 Corinthians 11 1Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. Propriety in Worship 2I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the teachings, just as I passed them on to you. 3Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. 6If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head. 7A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10For this reason, and because of the angels, the woman ought to have a sign of authority on her head. 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. 13Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. So, here are my problems: - First, this is the ONLY passage in the NT that dictates a specific article of clothing. This made me suspicious. - The Greek word for covering in vs6 is intensive leading one to believe that all the hair must be covered. - vs 10 is simply strange, and most explanations seem stretched. - vs 14 makes no sense at all considering the OT Nazirite vow, and the fact that Paul was taking this vow (read: had long hair) at the time of writing this. - vs 16 seems to say "But hey! Don't like this? Don't worry! The other churches don't do this either!" This left me puzzled as I like to know what a passage is trying to say, and this passage seemed to be written in a way to make it an issue of contention. This article: http://williamwelty.com/william/docs/essays/rethinking_the_veil.pdf and this translation (ISV) gave me new insights to the issues. Be Imitators of Me 11 1Be imitators of me, as I am of the Messiah. 2I praise you for remembering me in everything and for carefully follow¬ing the traditions, just as I passed them on to you. Advice about Uncovering the Head in Worship 3Now I want you to realize that the Messiah is the head of every man, and man is the head of the woman, and God is the head of the Messiah. 4Every man who prays or prophesies with something on his head dishonors his head, 5and every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, which is the same as having her head shaved. 6So if a woman does not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it is a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her own head. 7A man should not cover his own head, because he exists as God's image and glory. But the woman is man's glory. 8For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9and man was not created for woman, but woman for man. 10This is why a woman should have authority over her own head: because of the angels. 11In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man of woman. 12For as woman came from man, so man comes through woman. But everything comes from God. 13Decide for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14Nature itself teaches you neither that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair 15nor that hair is a woman's glory, for hair is given as a substitute for coverings. 16But if anyone wants to argue about this, we do not have any custom like this, nor do any of God's churches. I have concluded that the passage was written to deal with Jewish believers in the church. Men are instructed not to wear head coverings, while women must realize what it might look like to an unbelieving Jewish husband. If both are in the Lord, the issue becomes moot. This seemed to me to be more in line with the passages others have quoted about our outward appearances.

Ahahahahaha.....DenimDiva is too cute!!! quote:
Lexie, lace coverings would be good! You definately wouldn't be mistaken for a gang member. You didn't hear? The Crips have switched from blue to lace!?!? Actually I should clarify that when I say something like the Muslims wear I don't mean a hijab or anything! I want what they wear underneath the hijab to cover the front part of their head that peaks out from under the hijab (some women cover that part, some don't). It's a very wide headband basically that will cover the top of my head and stay in place on its own.

When I was in university I attended Muslim prayers to see what it is like. I wore a hijab out respect. It was an interesting experience. But I would not hear it as a head covering. For me personally, it felt constricting. It's more than just a head covering. When worn properly it covers ears and necks as it does up right under the chin. I'm looking to cover just my hair.

I guess I haven't read up on this too much, only to the point of what scripture says. I've talked with hubby about it and he doesn't want me to do it. So here's my deal, I do feel a pulling to cover. But if my husband doesn't want me to, covering kinda would be going against the whole idea of it, wouldn't it?

Sandy had a great response for your Kathryn, I was thinking along the same lines (that's what makes her thoughts so great!) Are you feeling a pull to cover all of the time or just during times of prayer and worship? Also, do you know what kind of covering you intend to use? I'm sure a compromise can be reached. In my church the women don't cover the way I do with a scarf, they were a nice hat. Maybe your husband would be ok with that, during times of worship. Remind him that this is one of many ways that you are not only humbling yourself before God, but humbling yourself before your husband and respecting him as your husband and head. I understand your situation. Dh and I feel differently about birth control methods. After giving it thought, I gave it up to God and told my husband that we would do things the way he wanted. A short while later, we had to scrap that form of bc. So my advice is to try for a compromise and continue to pray on it and give it up to God to work in your husbands heart and mind about this one.

Honestly, I know I feel it for prayer and worship, not sure about all the time yet. I know for prayer and worship. I feel a pull to be 'set apart'. And I feel this would do that.

I talked again with him last night and he is thinking I wanted to do it because of a trend here on crosswalk. While I know more and more women are being inspired to cover as a result on here, if I didn't feel a pull to do this, I'd just dismiss it. But I felt it about a year ago and I'm still feeling it now. I really want to search out the scriptures and pray about this. I need the Lord to show me if He wants me to do this. When I talked last night to hubby about it, he wasn't opposed to it, he just wanted to make sure of my reasoning. That I wasn't simply going with the crowd, that I was doing it because I felt convicted. And he's right, I do need to make sure this is something the Lord wants me to do. So I am going to read the scriptures, read the articles that Sandy sent and pray. Something that would help me is, to the women who cover and the men whose wives cover, why do you/they do it? It is voluntary, or do hubbies require it?

So here's my deal, I do feel a pulling to cover. But if my husband doesn't want me to, covering kinda would be going against the whole idea of it, wouldn't it? Yes...if your husband is strongly against it at this time...it would be partially against the whole point of covering. (only partially since it also shows submission to God). As someone else stated...pray. Ask God to give you confirmation by changing your husband's mind and heart on this...and then leave it in HIS hands. I took that route with covering and with being quiverful. It took a while for me to get my confirmation...but God provided it without any help on my part. quote:

It is fully voluntary and fully my own conviction. My husband supports me in it, and will let me know if I have left it on to go to bed, or if it has fallen off or I've forgotten it....

While our church teaches it, my husband does not require it of me. When we are in study or prayer just the two of us he doesn't ask me to where to it if I don't put it on. My husbands idea of it comes down to conviction - does one feel they need to do it or not and are they sure they are right with God when it comes to their decision. It's like the skirts thing - I do wear pants and he never says anything, he says its up to me to interpret the scriputre for myself. He may hope that I see things his way if we see things differently, but he won't require it of me.
