Not that long ago we discovered that several of the game threads were responsible for many of the problems people were having with page loads being slow.

We've taken the time to review the matter and how we can administer the folder so that it will allow people to have fun while not creating so much trouble for everyone else in the forum.

This is what we've decided:

Phase 1
Threads in the Humor & Games folder will be closed after they have reached 100 pages.

Phase 2
Limit the folder to 2 groups of 3 games for a total of 6 games.

Each game will run for 2 months and will then be closed by the Games Master. (A position to be filled at a later date.)

Example:
GameA, GameB, GameC will run for April and May and then be closed.

GameD, GameE, GameF will run for May and June and then be closed.

In this way new games may be started at the approval of the Games Master.

Who will select the Games Master?
The community will assist in identifying who should serve as the Games Master. Admin will give final approval on the position.

Why are you doing this?
Because some of the threads in the Humor & Games folder were identified by our staff to be major contributors to the problem of slow page loads which affect all users, not just those in the Humor & Games folder.

--------

I'm going to leave this thread open for comments. I do promise to read your comments, however please do not expect me to respond to your comment.

All the games I posted in are gone but one, and it has over a 100 pages so guess it's one of the next to go.

I understand the point of these prospective changes. Nonetheless, it seems that making a limit of 6 games would stifle the great diversity that has historically been present in this folder, and with it a fair amount of the available enjoyment. I'd like to petition for one page of games--maybe 20-22? More than double that number have gotten played in the past 24 hours.

I also understand the point behind cutting a thread off at 100 pages. Still, a thread of that length has only grown to such a degree b/c of its popularity. To remove any of those games without any other reason is to remove a large part of the reason many people visit Crosswalk! I think it'd be great if administrators restarted each of those threads with credit given to the person who originally started the thread, and with the original opening post's text kept intact.

Thank you very much for your consideration,
Ryan

I very much agree with Quipper ^. To limit to 3 games at a time seems to me a bit of overkill. Are such Extreme measures truly necessary? I can truly see the need to eliminate and reduce, but I think such a drastic move such as is proposed could indeed kill the Humor and Games folder.

God created man with much diversity in ability, creativity and character; this much control seems to me like it would be very stifleing. I do agree with Ryan's suggestion of at least keeping 20 or so going.

Could we not eliminate just the types games that have been identified as the problem causers and go from there?

I am sure that you have researched this thoroughly and know more than I do about it, but I respect your willingness to allow us to respond to your proposals.

Thank you for considering our input,
Sandy

A quick note here, I rarely have trouble with slow page loads here or elsewhere. Is this happening for a large # of posters? I always thought this had to do with a person's personal computer. But then, I'm not real computer literate, so don't mind me.

3 games is not enugh! Why don't you just get rid of all the unpopular games? Or at least leave like 5 games instead of 3!!! I really don't think 3 is enugh, I mean really, this whole bored is for games and if it only has 3 at a time then what's the point?!?! You might as well get rid of the whole humor and games section! I do think there are too much games yes, but you don't need to take it all the way down to 3, that's a little extreme. And I have never had trouble with the pages loading slow. But your in charge so do whatever you want.

As a developer of databases and web based management systems, I understand what you mean when you say that the H&G folder is making the site slower. The larger the thread, the more data in the database and the longer the time to process that information which will slow down the server and subsequently the processes running delivering the content. Likewise, the more people accessing the forum at any given time, the more stress and strain it puts on the server. This is understandable and I am sad to see the threads go. But I do have to mention one thing. While limiting the threads to only a handful will solve the problem in theory, it seems like overkill.

Is it possible to just delete the threads older then 15-30 days and the those that have over 50-100 pages in length instead? This should free up size of the database and the time it takes to pull up the information.

The H&G folder is the one place on cw that seems to have some sanity at times. Other folders you can take a beating in and it is always nice to be able to come in here and have some fun. I realize that Salem is a business and like all businesses they need to do what they feel is right and that most of the people in H&G don't pay to use this service, but I must tell you that your website and this forum have been a true blessing to me in my life. I think I can speak for others when I say that I have made dozens of good friends through the H&G forum and though it may sound silly and many would brush me off and roll their eyes, this one folder is a great place to fellowship with other believers. Sure there is a lot of pointless chatter that goes on, but there also are some real encouraging things that go on in here also. Again it may sound dumb, but many of the people in here are like family to me and I am always excited to meet new people. Taking the majority of this folder down would pretty much ruin that. I thank you Fritz and all of the mods and people at cw and Salem for what you have done here. It has been a blessing. But I also encourage you to find a way to some how keep this folder going, maybe not to the same level as it has been but at least to allow us to enjoy the service you have provided.

Again, thank you so much for what you provide.

In Christ,
2cor

Thank you, 2cor, I totally agree. Sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me hanging on; playing a game or so with you and the I have come to know and enjoy spending our time together. The problem is that with only a limited few and new games needing approval ---- (if you understand this: "Phase 2
Limit the folder to 2 groups of 3 games for a total of 6 games. Each game will run for 2 months and will then be closed by the Games Master..... In this way new games may be started at the approval of the Games Master. "
, I don't.) ---- everyone will be jostling to get their answer in before someone else beats them to it---you have to be a fast thinker and typist, which leaves me and a few others out; there will be no such thing as relaxing Chess Game Pace here anymore.
I know I'm not computer tech. bright but it sure seems to me that it would be possible, and just as easy, to 1.) Just delete the threads that are not posted in within 14 days. 2.) And delete the first 99 pages whenever a game reaches 100 pages; letting the games run their coarse of interest.3.) No new games added after 3 full pages of Games [Titles] are filled up, until one or more are deleted to make room.

Anyway, Thanks everyone for posting too, I don't feel as alone now.

Pat

That number will probably be changed to a higher number as it is easier to tighten things down and then slowly release it than the other way around.

I will go along with whatever is decided, but I just wanted to echo those who say they don't have a problem with slow page loading. I don't find the pages in the H&G folder loading any slower than the threads in any other folder.

However, I do think there is a need for some streamlining.

While not being a web developer myself, I understand what 2cor was saying. If you access a given game thread, the server has to load up ALL the information that was in that thread, even if you're only looking at the most recent page of that thread.

Though not gainsaying the decisions that have been made by the staff, I do however observe that the formatting of the old boards (with the OP at the top of each page) would have had a minor advantage in this case. Size could have been managed by only keeping, say, the most recent 20 pages of a thread in the database, allowing older pages to delete and the space to be used for other memory needs.

I would be curious to hear how the game selection process will be implemented. Would members with a game idea post to a special board for the Games Master to select from? Or will members post their games to the board and the GM then decide which shall remain and which shall be closed? Or at this point, is that still in the works?

Just my two cents...

I take you at your word that there have been problems with slow loading even though in the year or so that I have been a member, I have used dial-up, DSL and dedicated access and have never had a problem. I absolutely love to play the games in this thread and am very unhappy that the total number of simultaneous games will be six. Golly, there are more games than that in the Southern Gospel folder! My hope is that once everything is revamped and settled back down, you will allow more games.

What about the humor? The Trolle Threads, Sloppe Shoppe, and No Such Thing As..., etc. are not games, but more chatty-type threads that encourage humor. We were, for the Troll thread at least, starting a new one monthly to keep the size down. Will this thread (or this type of thread) be allowed to continue under those or similar parameters?

Doing a monthly chat thread is certainly preferable over the longer un-ending sort.

Probably will limit chat threads to 2 or 3.

Yeah, at this point we're moving to limiting to a total of 8 or 10 instead of 6.

Being somewhat computer savvy, but not knowing all the programming and server type stuff about them, I realize that you have to take measures to make things go more smoothly in the H & G forum. However, I'm concerned about losing my post count when the inactive threads are purged a year from when they were last posted into. My goal is to become a Super Member and I don't want to go backwards in my member rank and post count!

I recommend dividing the folders into several subtypes and limiting each subtype to 8-10 games with 100 pages each. The subtypes I recommend are:

Word Games
Bible Games
Number games
Situation games (Bad Advice Only, etc)
Spelling Games
Miscellaneous Games

This is just an idea to consider, but I know that you'll always do what is best for the community, Fritz, even if I or others don't agree with your decisions.

Thank you Fritz for your reply. I was referring to the "3 at a time" reference:

" Example:
GameA, GameB, GameC will run for April and May and then be closed.

GameD, GameE, GameF will run for May and June and then be closed."

Sorry if I misunderstood, now I see that there is a overlap time with May, but I still don't quite understand it. Either way, even 6 games seemed like very few, I was in no way trying to misrepresent what you said. I saw that you said 6 total and I am encouraged to see that you are saying that number may be increased over time. This should give us all hope.

Thanks again,
Truth

Thanks 2Cor., for writing this. I agree, it has been a great place to unwind and meet new people and spend time with friends , both to encourage, as well as be encouraged. May God's hand be on all that is done so that He will be glorified.
God bless,

I will accept what you decide, but wonder why only those games that were the culprits and the many unused games on the back pages are not removed? Also, I'd prefer that moderators decide what new games be started, rather than just one person making the decision, if that's possible.

Fritz,
Can we start new games now, before the Games Master is selected? I want to resurrect the "Bad Advice", What Would You Do?" and "The Person Below Me" threads, but I need to know if it's okay to do so.

No new games just yet.

New games will be started in May.

Users wishing to start a new game in May can PM me with their game idea.

I will then select who will start the new May Games.

Fritz,
How about a jokes or humor folder as well? I have posted some good jokes in the past and have found some more that I would like to post. May I start them in May also?
