Be sure to read up on it. I couldn't agreee more with this statement ~ whether it's regarding black cohosh or any other medication/supplement. We're talking about our bodies here and ultimately it's down to us to take care of them as best as we can. Our doctors can suggest and do prescribe medications for us but we should still find out as much information as we can about what we're putting into our systems. Look at the possible side effects (long and short term) and possible medication drug (I include alternative treatments in with this) interactions too ~ and make an educated guess. Your doctor may not always be able to answer your questions on interactions between prescribed/over the counter meds and alternatives, a pharmacist may be able to, often it comes down to researching yourself though.

Thanks for the definitions -- they help. I agree, too, with reading up on any herbal supplements or natural remedies. Many have side effects or can interact with other drugs, but because they're not under the FDA they don't have to list them on their products. Does anyone have experience with feeling the emotional effects that usually come before a period after a period? I just finished about a two-week long period (three if I count the week of spotting before that -- by the way -- do I count the first day of spotting as the first day of my period or the first day there was more of a flow? Not that it matters that much except for when the doctor's office asks you when your last period was). Anyway, this was the first period I'd had since Christmas. Over this past weekend I was extremely easily irritated and then yesterday got very hurt and emotional over things that should not have affected me that much. That happens sometimes before my period -- it's unusual for it to happen afterward. I want to just go watch a sad movie and cry and get it out of my system. :)

ORIGINAL: wareaglekd I'm 46 now & just started wearing Depends a couple of months ago due to extremely heavy flows that can't be held in regular pads. ... I do experience insomnia a few nights a month too. I am so sorry! That sounds miserable! I pray this "Depends" phase won't last long. I experience the insomnia, too. I can pretty much count on having to take some sort of medication if I want to get a decent night's sleep the week after my period.

I'm actually kind of glad I have the Depends. I don't know what I'd do w/o them. I know longer have to worry about accidents like I did w/ just pads. Pads were not going to hold up in gushing moments, so I'm glad that Depends are made the way they are so if I'm too busy to change I don't have to worry until I can get a break to go to the bathroom. I do hope this part doesn't take as long, but I've endured so much already I guess I can handle this too. Too many folks are telling me it's just as bad on the other side of this, so I'm in no hurry! kd

I have a question. Our youngest daughter (15) has always had such messed up cycles....flow for a month then not have one for 3 months. I am wondering if her messed up cycles are messing up my cycle? She is the only other female in the house now (from 4 down to just the one) and last week I got to thinking about when mine started getting screwy. It coincided with my 19 yr old moving out of the house. So, could it be?

Well, now I really don't know what's going on - I've been having problems with breast tenderness for the past three or four days when I haven't had this problem in years and it's nowhere near That Time. It's sooo uncomfortable and aggravating! I went on WebMD and looked this up, but they didn't really have suggestions for relief other than painkillers. Any suggestions for home remedies?

I don't know about home remedies, but too much caffeine will do that to me. Has your caffeine intake been more than normal lately?

I have a problem with caffeine too. It gets worse during PMS, ovulation and TOM though.

Yes, caffeine makes my PMS worse, too. It's an awful battle, because for some reason I crave coffee more at that time, but then I really pay for it with moodiness.

That sounds awful, Landabee. I hope you continue to improve with the meds.

Thanks, Sue. I'm pretty sure this flare was stress induced. There have been 21 position eliminations in the last work week within the company I work for. My immediate supervisor was one of them. Everyone has been on pins and needles.
