Finally rented GRAW2 for PS3. I'm a PC gamer and have played GRAW2 for PC almost all the way through, and both are awesome. I love the changes made... neither feel like a port and the graphics are amazing. I've also just played the Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction demo. This is going to be an insane release. Defining moment for PS3, as the gameplay is on par with the pre-rendered video. Only GT Prologue might give it a run for its money right now. I rented Rainbow Six Vegas for PS3, wasn't impressed. Graphics aren't as good as GRAW2, blurry, and feels too slow. And... I'll have to wait a few months for Orange Box for PS3. I'd get it on PC, but I want split screen multiplayer. Pirates of the Caribbean for Wii is a bit disappointing -- very linear (thus far) and multiplayer is locked until you get far enough. Oh, and Rayman Raving Rabbids is awesome. One of the best games out if you have a sick sense of humor.

Okay, I've almost finished Half Life 2: Episode 2, and I can say that my computer was not up to the task. While I still had fun playing, there were far too many sections that were frustrating because of bad frame rates, especially the biggest battle so far, which was most likely the climax of the story line. I really need to play this game again when I get a better computer, I'm betting that giant outdoor battle is a pretty fun if you're not fighting your computer more than you are the Combine. That said, Valve has really impressed me with the Source engine, again. Wow, this game looks good, even when I've had to turn down settings, and it still runs pretty decent in indoor environments. Not bad for running on a processor that was mid-range when I bought it six years ago. Sure, a lot of the gameplay was variations on things that have been done before (defending an area with multiple entrances by setting up turrets, waiting for a slow elevator while getting attacked, using stepping stones over radioactive goo as hidden zombies pop-up) but it's all done so well, you almost forget there are only two new enemies in episode, and one new weapon that isn't even part of your inventory. I love that Valve carried over their Xbox Live achievements to the PC version. It's really fun to get a little pop-up in the corner telling you that you've fulfilled another one. I'm going to be sad when I run out of achievements in Team Fortress 2. Let me say again, if you own a capable PC, or an X-box 360, you should go out and get the Orange Box (PS3 version is coming out eventually). The games are fantastic. Portal is especially good. It's short, but that just means it doesn't overstay it's welcome. The humor in the game is dark, but not gruesome. The ending is absolutely fantastic, I can't remember the last time I actually was angered by a video game character, not because the game was difficult, but simply because the character was portrayed well enough to incite loathing. There are rumors that HL2:Ep3 will allow Gordon Freeman to use the portal gun. If Valve can weave that into the HL2 gameplay, that would be so awesome. (There's already a hack out to allow playing with the portal gun in the existing HL2 games, but allows you into all sorts of areas you're not supposed to go, and allows you to skip all sorts of obstacles. Fun to play with, but unbalances gameplay.) Oh, I also got a year's subscription to GameTap. I must say I'm having fun playing Psychonauts and one of the old Incredible Machine games (and I've got quite a playlist to move onto after I finish those). Seems like it'll be a pretty good value at $60 for the year. However, the Gametap interface is awful! I thought I appreciated Steam before, but doubly-so now.

Just had to chime in on this one. Portal is excellent!! Sound, graphics, dialogue, gameplay, storyline, and a great sense of humor all adds up to a fabulous game. Should have been much longer, but I don't think Valve quite anticipated how well it was going to be received and leaving people crying for more. It's now in my 'favorites' list. HL2, episode one: Ho hum. HL2, episode two: Much better so far. I also like the achievements for PC. Will tackle the garden gnome on the second run through, I think.

What Valve has said in the past, and this applies to Team Fortress 2 as well, is that they plan to offer additional maps in the future, for free.

I have only just got the orange box a few days ago, Portal was the best thing in that! It was amazing and funny and just downright one of the best games I have played. I thought 2-3 hours of game play was good to complete it, as the game doesn't ware off as a novelty. Plus if you want more you can complete the levels in a variety of different ways and using different techniques. So it could be classed as much longer. as for Episode one and two... Just two more transitional stages for HL. Generally more of the same traditional FPS. Team Fortress 2 is good fun and is just a polished up version of the original.

I loved those little 'glimpses' encountered behind the scenes and the hilarious mystery voice egging me on. Once you've reached the end, all is made clear and that's that. Plot revealed and mystery solved. Additional content will be just puzzles, you know? I felt like I was just starting to get into swing of things.... and then it was all over.

I tried playing Team Fortress Classic back when I bought the Half Life Platinum Pack, and I couldn't even finish a single match because I had no idea how to play the game. The controls were obscure, the objectives were unclear, the classes looked really similar (to my eyes) and I just couldn't figure out how to play. However, TF2 is so much better. The art design is fantastic, and actually adds to the gameplay by allowing easy identification of the classes, among other things. There has, obviously, been a lot of work done to make TF2 a game that explains itself. I'm eager to get a new PC, so I can play TF2 without any framerate issues.

Well, you've got a point there. The interaction between Chell and GLaDOS does seem to be at an end. However, I hardly think that everything has been made clear. Apparently there is a whole bunch more backstory hidden on the Aperture Science website, giving hints as to how Aperture Science and GLaDOS came to be, and who Chell is. Not to mention that Portal really does take place in the Half Life universe (as has been suggested by Valve since Portal was announced). I won't say just how it's connected, for those who haven't seen the references in Portal and/or HL2: Episode 2. I think that the story of Aperture Science is far from told.

I haven't been playing TF2 much lately, since I've been busy taking care of my cat who died on Sunday, but I'll probably get online and play later this week. I also like playing the coop maps on HL2 Deathmatch. EDIT: For some reason, Steam won't let me add you to my friends list.

Okay, reviving this old thread with a question. What game characters do you think have most shaped, or been shaped by, the games they've been in? For instance, Mario is an icon, certainly one of the most recognized game characters, but the character of Mario doesn't really bring much to the game. Aside from all the pipes, what about Mario is really brought out in the game? Anyway, the character that brought this to my mind: - The Nameless One (Planesape: Torment, PC, Black Isle Studios, 1999) For those who haven't played this one. Torment is an RPG that focuses more on dialog and player choices than on combat, despite being made on the same engine as Baldur's Gate and using D&D rules. Torment is contrary to a lot of prevalent trends in RPGs, and a lot of that revolves around TNO. The general plot is that the TNO wakes up in a mortuary covered with enough scars to kill a man many times over, and has no memory of who he is. The plot of the game follows his attempts to discover who he is, and why he keeps coming back from the dead. Unlike most D&D based games, TNO doesn't have a set alignment. You start as True Neutral and the choices you make in the game will determine if you're Lawful Good, or Chaotic Evil, or somewhere in between. Say kind things to people, and you'll edge towards good. Demand payment for doing a good deed, and you'll inch towards an evil alignment. Truth and making vows turns you lawful, lying and causing random destruction will make you chaotic. This means that PS:T allows for more actual role-playing than Baldur's Gate did. (On my second time through the game I tried to play as Chaotic Evil, to see how different the game would be, but I just couldn't do it.) Lots of other aspects of the game are shaped by TNO as well. A main character who doesn't stay dead led to some interesting puzzles, as well as less worry about what combat there is (well, there is still care for the other members of the party). Plus, the idea that the TNO has lived many lives before, and instead of learning things, he really remembers past skills made for a great way to have such a dialogue heavy game still earn experience points without having to have a lot of level grinding random combat. Anyone else have examples of games that just seem to revolve around a character? Or even sections of games that have a certain character as their lynch-pin?

Speaking of Zelda, I just got Phantom Hourglass for Christmas. Single player is pretty good, not great but certainly enjoyable. However, I want to try multiplayer and now I've got to figure out how I'm going to get online. *grumble* Stupid DS, not supporting WPA. What was Nintendo thinking?

Figment, The answer to your question - characters shaping their world - is actually a game I've been playing recently. Mass Effect. Through your personal choices, the effects you have on the universe are, er...massive.

What's up my fellow gamers?! I have been a gamer since the age of 4 and have every system out there except the PS3. And I do mean every system that has ever been released in the U.S. since 1980. Lately I have been spending a lot of time with the 360 and am currently playing Oblivion. The last few games I finished were Assassins Creed and Mass Effect. Also, I have been playing WoW since November of 2004 and my main is a lvl 70 human warrior named, you guessed it, earthless. On the Aggrammar server. My wife also plays there - a female paly.

If I wanted to get online with my DS, it would be a big hassle to either disable encryption entirely, or to temporarily set it to WEP instead of WPA, and I'd rather not have to worry about figuring out if my mom, sister or dad are using their laptops at the time, and any other headaches that might arise. I might do that, if I really want to play some multiplayer, but right now I'm looking at ways to get my DS online without having to mess with the existing setup. (either getting one of the official Nintendo USB dongles, or getting a USB wireless adaptor, or getting a second router, or....) As for Tag Mode, that doesn't work over WiFi, it's a local only thing. You set your game into Tag Mode, and then just leave your DS in your pocket or bag, and then it will trade items with other systems that come near that are also in Tag Mode. I'm kinda wondering how likely it would be that someone walking the mall would just happen to have their DS with the same game, also in Tag Mode (Nintendogs has a similar feature called Bark Mode or something). A gaming, scifi or anime convention, I can see that being likely, maybe even at a college, but overall Tag Mode seems a little too unlikely to actually work in general circumstances.

oh i see hope u can get it to work cus Battle Mode is pretty fun yeah i figured thats around how Tag Mode worked but i wasnt sure thanks for the info...but i read about it and it sais it also takes more battery to run Tag Mode which would make it even worse to just walk around a place like the mall with it on all the time lol
