yes I know about the woodword over the door, but hubby painted it pink, I told him to leave the top bit black. We had a disagreement about it!! The woodwork was painted white before we painted. I might leave it a few days or until we go to paint other rooms and then mention it to hubby and see if we can paint it black.

Now that we're renovating the house, we are going to be able to add flooring, I want to go with tile for the kitchen.
What colors or patterns could I use in this room?

I like your kitchen Yolanda!! could you not just use the same sort of colour tile that is already down? Or maybe the darker colour that is on your benchtops?

You could use any color or pattern because your base is very neutral and the cabinets don't scream a certain genre. Do you have colors and patterns you are leaning towards?

If stain/crumb concealment is you goal you need to have something that is variagated and a medium color. Light colors show dark things (like spilled Kool-Aid) and dark colors show light things (like bread crumbs.) So you want to be in the middle color hues with irregular bits of both light and dark, like slate. If you do something tan, you will want to go with something that contrasts with your maple, and reads either cream or chocolate, but is variagated. Hardwood is a flooring that hides a lot, if you get the "right" color; however, your cabinets are so prominate I think medium colored hardwood on the floor would be way too much wood. With a really dark or light hardwood, I think you could get away with it because it would contrast with your cabinets, but then you lose the hiding properties.
I'd offset the hardwood under the bar, as you can probably guess from what I said about the kitchen. Personally, I'd chose a dark hardwood (because your countertop is so dark and a dark floor will be more grounding for the entire room,) but a very light one (significantly lighter than your maple) could work as well. Just remember if you start keeping a lot of large light surfaces in that area, your countertops are going to stick out and the room won't be balanced. IMO, chosing a darker flooring is the easiest way to balance that out and you can fudge a bit on the furniture and accessories. If you get off balance with the flooring, though, you will have a devil of a time balancing out the room with smaller elements.

Yeah, I think medium colour would be best for the kitchen/dining area...
I doubt we will put hardwood in the kitchen...
For the living area, the part that butts up against the bar, we were thinking hardwood. Hubby loves dark wood and lots of pattern in the wood, where I love light coloured wood (hence choosing maple for the kitchen). I just don't think it would look right to put something really light in such a big area....
So I tend to lean away from the dark, but I think for such a big space, it will work better. Though, I have a friend who has like a chocolate coloured hardwood on her living area floor, and you can see every foot print, finger print, etc. But that might have more to do with the finish.
I'm going to go take a picture of my existing living room, and post a picture of our new floor layout...

The darker and more matte (read: less textured, less graining, less variation of hues) a flooring is the more you see. Going super dark is not a good answer to hiding anything.

Tell me what's wrong and I'll try to give you an opinion. I'd think with your talent at jewelry making you'd be really good at chosing colors and balancing everything.

No, I was doing fine with a plan I had until we installed new floors and now I can't figure out what to do. I have photos on this post here. A friend of mine says she likes the chocolate brown on the walls (behind the couches) with the new floors, but I'm not so sure. Yes, I know the rug is awful. It was $40, ok? I looked high and low and the only ones I actually liked (I'm too picky) were $600+ and I'm just not going to invest that much in a rug for this house. The couches are slip covered, and I hope to replace them sometime in the next 2 years. I really don't know what to do with the wall color and couch color. The light tan (not behind the couches) will be painted over soon too. I was going to stay in the same color but go a bit lighter, but I just don't know.
My office was supposed to be red, but I don't like it with the new flooring either. I LOVE the new flooring, I just can't figure out what to put with it.
Here's one more of the living room (yes, Sarah, my slip cover DOES look sloppy there... LOL).
Those three photos on the wall are supposed to have these cute little shelves under them, but ummm they never got hung and now I want the pictures gone. I can't keep my mind set on anything.

Vinyl wall art? I've seen vinyl sayings, but not "art."
I like the color OK with the flooring, but if you don't like it I'd change it. I would chose my art and slipcovers before changing it.
I can't see the space across from the kitchen, so these ideas may not work. It's really hard to get a sense of scale from pictures of half of a room.
As far a changing the placement of furniture, I would move the rug such that it was centered with the entertainment center and then move the sofas accordingly, making sure to leave walking space into the kitchen.
You could also reverse the room and have the back of the couch make a "hallway" into the kitchen.
Another idea is to turn the sofa and love seat on an angle closer to the TV, such that they made a triangle with the TV wall.

I guess what I was trying to say about your room is that the TV and the seating don't appear to be in the same room and they need to be one grouping. Anything that accomplishes that will probably solve most of your frustration with the room.
