I am just wondering what any of you guys think about a Church doing internet Baptism? I heard a Church is now doing internet baptism. You go online and the Pastor will walk you through as someone in your house dunks you in your own bath tub.

Do you think this is wrong or right?

Just Wondering.

I guess it's inevitable with people thinking they don't need to have anything to do with other believers in the flesh.

But it is contrary to the scriptural teachings and examples of the early Church in the NT. Isolation from the Church is not Christian.

Weird! I would have nothing to do with it.

I think in and of itself it's not wrong.

I think it's wrong for people to be unwilling to bond with a local church.

I think it's great for people who are physically unable to leave their house.

I'll go for weird, although I agree it's not biblical. Baptism is a public demonstration of your faith, not something to do in your bathtub.

Who led the person to Christ? Wouldn't that person be a better choice for the baptism than some random person over the Internet? Why not get a local pastor to come baptize the convert at their home?

I don't know that it's entirely wrong in every single circumstance, but I just think it's unnecessary and weird.

Thanks for all the replys. I am a new believer and I had a problem with that so I wanted to talk to some people to make sure that what I was feeling was normal.

Why would someone opt for a baptism over the internet and in private over public baptism?

Thanks

If I were baptized in my tub, then why do I need an online guide? Wouldn't the person baptizing me be able to handle it?

I think if it were necessary because a person was home-bound, I would rather send someone, a local minister from a different church, if I were not available. I think the internet guided baptism is strange. It is a little like that commercial where the surgeon is on the phone with the guy and is telling him where to make the incision... I know it doesn't take someone with special training or skill to baptize, but it seems really disconnected, and out of place.

I was thinking of that commercial while reading this thread!

I can't understand why someone would go through with this, unless they were complete shut-ins.

If someone still has to come to physically be "the baptizer" then I don't understand why the Internet is necessary, unless "the baptizer" has no idea of what they should even do or say. But if this is the case, then as long as a Bible is available (and if the internet is available, you can always go to one of the Bible web sites on there), then I don't understand why "the baptizer" just would not read in the Bible about baptism and do the baptism following the guidelines already given to us in Scripture or following the examples given in Scripture.

I run a ministry over the internet and I do think internet baptisms are wrong. I travel to perform baptisms for my members or I hook them up with a pastor in their area. All i can say is wrong not biblical and weird

I had to say weird. It is totally unbiblical of course as all biblical baptisms were done by believers who had been baptized and in person for there was no such thing as an Internet. To say that a Pastor has to be present for a baptism is not biblical either. But the person who baptizes another believer does need to be a believer and baptized themselves. As for baptizing in a bathtub I only know of that being done personally in areas where it would be illegal to baptize in public. The whole purpose of baptism is to identify yourself with the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Though it may be possible that a shut-in person could not be publicly baptized, it would be best to be done by someone they knew. If they wished to have a Pastor or Minister do the baptism then I am sure they could find one locally who would be willing to do so. As for any Pastor doing this on the Internet, how would anyone know they are a Pastor? Anybody could claim to be a Pastor of a church on the Internet. So I would have absolutely voted it wrong if that were a choice in the poll. In the small town I live in I know that anyone would easily find a Pastor or Minister willing to baptize a believer, in fact our church has an inside baptismal so they dont have to go to the lake. So the idea of it being done over the Internet is Weird, unbiblical, and just plain wrong.

Just the opinion of a small town preacher

I gotta admit, it sounds odd on the surface. Admittedly, there is no Biblical mandate that it has to be a pastor, evangelist, or apostle that baptizes someone, just as there is no real scriptural mandate for the modern model of church in the Western World either. Now, I think it is a good idea to have something like this available "in case" of the one person who gets saved and there isn't anyone close that knows the first thing about Baptism, but that is so hypothetical that it almost isn't even worth messing with.

I would put this in the "that's interesting... I wonder what else is on?" catagory.

Um. . . Can someone show me where in scripture is says that baptism is suppose to be public and is nullified if it is done in a more private setting?

This is a sincere request. I'm trying to find it. I can't.

OTH, can you find a baptism in scripture where they hid in the bushes or intentionally held a private baptism? I'm reasonably sure you can't find that either.

Right. So why is the one that only takes place in front of a group of people valid?

Actually I do not see a non public baptism as being wrong it is the manner in wich it is done is wrong. A non believer performing a baptism from internet instructions is what is wrong.

I agree that a non believer should not be performing a baptism. . . but what if a person wants to have a baptism with just a couple people? Maybe their immediate family? Where do we find that this is a nullified baptism?

I think the whole ideal of getting baptized in your own bath tub that you use every day and listening to a voice from your computer is just freaky.

For that matter, why couldn't I just baptize myself? I can dunk down and get up without help.

I don't think bathtubs are biblical.
