From this list I don't really consider the Inspirations, the Kingsmen, and Gold City to be "old groups" because they are still around. Yes, there have personnel changes for them over the years but they are still the same goups to me. Are they on the list just because of longevity? One "old group" that maybe should have been included if longevity is a criteria would be the Chuck Wagon Gang. How long have they been around now? 77 years?

I realize that every old group could not be listed, but what about the Hemphills and the Rambos. Out of the ones listed, it was a toss-up between the Happy Goodmans and the Hinsons. My lot fell with the Hinsons. They were great. I never got to see either of my two favorites in person.

I picked up some old Hinsons LP's at our local used record store last year and was pleasantly surprised. They were really good.

My top 5 of old groups no longer together or retired would be Statesman while Denver Crumpler was with them Blackwood Bros. while JD was with them Rebels Qt when jim hamil and london paris was with them Oak ridge boys/qt. when smitty gatlin and herman harper and willie winn and william golden Florida Boys when Billy Todd was with them. All time favorite is Inspirations but they are still going strong today Honorable mention to Happy Goodman and Sons of Song

I can't pick. One day I'll say Cathedrals, another I'll say Kingsmen, another I'll say Gold City, on yet another day I'd pick Statesmen. I could write for hours mentioning all the great groups from the "glory days" of SG. This is an impossiable question to answer.

Blackwood Brothers hands down. the old Chuck Wagon Gang hands down. on there as much as I love the Kingsmen. just look at Ronnie Hinson and the staple of SG. The Lighthouse. so am voting with the Hinsons.

I had a hard time choosing between the Cathedrals and the Statesmen. I would have chosen GC, but I don't really consider them "old time"

This hard a hard one for me but I picked the Knigsmen. I also loved the Cathedrals and the Happy Goodmans.

Of ALL time, It would have to be the Cathedrals. In my early years, The Goodmans. I didn't know who the Hinsons were until the early 80's, but I fell in love with them instantly. There will never be another Kenny Hinson. I wish I could have seen them in person. Add the Inspirations and the Florida Boys to these groups and you'd have a concert worth driving a couple hundred miles for even with $4 a gallon gasoline! I can't say that about most groups out there today, though many are really good.

quote:
ORIGINAL: bfuson0384 Although all these groups were fantastic in their time, and I was a fan of most of them, I think the greatest quartet that has ever been assembled was the Cathedrals, especially in the 80's, starting the decade out with Kirk Talley at tenor, then by 83 Danny Funderburk who would remain with the group for the remainder of the decade. Throw in Mark, George and Glen, you cant beat that lineup vocally. Then Roger leaves in 86 and Gerald comes in and they make two of the greatest albums of all time, Land of Living and Symphony of Praise. AMEN...your'e thinking straight!

Gold City.....hands up....or down!!! LOL The Gold City lineup of Brian Free, Ivan Parker, Mike LeFevre and Tim Riley (and of course the band) will always be my favorite group! They are the reason I fell in love with Southern Gospel music in the early 80's! Sandy
