ORIGINAL: Abbreviated Researched the Tahoe hybrid SUV. At 50,000$ I think I'll wait for a Jetson flying car. My neighbor just got one and loves it! She had a regular Tahoe, so traded it in for the hybrid. Dh just called as says we have enough for a Vespa, so we will probably go looking this weekend. That will save us a ton of money! He says the dealerships are offering tons of great deals, too, so hopefully we can get in on that!

I'm cheap, so I'll have to wait for the hybrids to go down in price, i.e., buy a used one.

There are places around here that are offering deals where if you buy a new car, they give you a credit card that you can use that locks in a price of $2.99 a gallon for the next three years. I don't know how much money you actually save, but it's brilliant marketing anyway.

One of our local car dealers is doing that.

ORIGINAL: Consecrated2God It's costing more and more to fill up these days. Where is that money coming from for you? Are you driving less to compensate? Spending less on other things? Getting another job? Let's talk about how we are coping with rising gas prics. I tell you what, before the prices of gas sky rocketed my wife used to pressure me constantly for a van or SUV, however, after the fuel crisis I have not heard on peep out of her. LOL. As for what we do now, our local Giant Eagle offers money off gas for money spent at the store so that we NEVER pay what every one else pays at the pump. What makes it nice is that you can buy gift cards there to other places that range from restaurants to airline gift cards so if you need something somewhere else you can buy the gift cards and really make a savings. They allow you up to 30 gallons of gas so I usually take a bunch of fuel cans with me when I fill up when I get my discounted gas. I then store the gas cans in the garage and use them periodically throughout the week as needed. I call it my Anwar!! It really has been a blessing!! Just to give you a taste, today I payed $1.39 per gallon of gas because I had spent quite a bit at that store recently. I then got 30 gallons of gas for a little over $40!!!

I don't want to buy a new car, but I wish there was some way to prepurchase gas at a certain rate -- short of having your own gas tank. In fact, that's what a lot of ranchers do around here -- they try to fill their underground tanks at a good price.

We removed the sat. TV a couple of moths ago, don’t miss it at all. Bought the digital box, it is great, best picture we ever had! If you’re paying for TV, put up an antenna and get the box, save yourself some bucks. There are several videos on You tube about making your own antenna! We have never owned a credit card. We did get a debit card at our bank last year. The gas stations want us to get a gas card from them; it is just another way of getting you into the credit card game. They know that with gas higher, more people will let the card bill slide another month and you will be paying interest on you’re already to high gas bill. The one I looked at was interest free... for 30 days. Direct keeps sending us a $29 a month offer, read the fine print, after a year the bill goes up another $23 a month. They also what you to sign a lease with them, but I could never find in the fine print how long, my guess would be at least two years. They also say free install, but they charge a $19 shipping and handling fee. Hybrids are still pretty rare, I would check on the repair costs before I sprung for the difference in price. You would almost be forced to let the dealer do the repair work, and that is never at a bargain rate!

Ours are down to 3.85. I don't know if it is because of the Street Rod festival in town this weekend or what.

hubby paid $3.88 on his way into town today - and on the way out of town four hours later and it was $3.98! I guess that means I just have to find even more ways to tighten our belts. I don't know. Blessings, Garsy

It went down and up again and it might go up again since the price of oil went up 11.00 a barrel today.

It looks like the biggest jump was between May of 2005 and 2006

It was so weird last night as we were fixing to get on the interstate there were three gas stations we passed. One was $3.89 and the other two were $3.99 so we get off the interstate and pass three different gas stations. One was $3.79 and the other two were $3.99...what? How can one place be so much cheaper. It has finally gotten to a point were it is cheaper even with 0.10 off at Kroger to get gas else where. I would like to know more about the 70s gas crisis and what kind of price hikes happened then.

I've seen the same thing here, only in town. There will be two stores within a mile of each other and have a 10 or 20 cent difference in price (I must say, though, that station is always higher). The thing is, people still go to the more expensive stations. Haven't they heard that they don't have to pay those prices??

I don't remember exactly what happened around the country, but where I lived at the time the prices pretty much doubled in a few months. We also had to get our gas on odd or even days depending on the license plate of the car (or something like that; can't remember what determined the day). I just remember waiting in line for several hours to get gas, and then sometimes there was no gas to get.

This is nothing compared to those days. It was just oppressive all around back then. I remember that feeling more than anything from back then.

Back then my parents - and most other parents - made kids walk everywhere, so I didn't notice the gas problems too much.

People kept stealing gas back then. Gas was stolen from my fathers work truck several times and he was not happy about it either.

Yeah, locking gas caps got really popular. We'll probably see those come back. The worst of the gas situation back then occurred when I was in college, and I didn't live on campus, so I didn't get the "luxury" of walking to school. But once at school, I did walk a lot and ride my bike.
