I started car pooling this week. So I will get money from the person that is riding with me. It saves time and money on gas. I am hoping to find someone else to carpool with so that I can only drive every 3 weeks. But car pooling is going to cut my costs in half. My car is paid off. It is a 1999 honda, so I have about 5-7 years left on the car. At that time I am hoping I will be able to buy the honda hydrogen car. We live close to the stores, so we can walk or ride our bikes. There are only 2 of us, so we don't have too many issues right now. The bigget thing that is hurting us is that I lost my job and to add me to his health insurance is $500 extra a month. Yikes! This new temp job I am doing is going to cut that down to about $300 a month. We are blessed to not owe anyone money but the mortgage. The other bills we could get rid if if it came to that. We got a BBQ for our wedding, so we bbq a lot. I have netflix & internet for entertainment. We drive my car when going long distance if we can, as it gets the best milage. There are ways to save money. My husband when he was single paid all the house bills on his own. He shopped at the $ store. Cut coupons. We still hardly ever eat some place full price. You can get free entrance to the zoo and some museums on certain days. Selling old things on ebay or craigslist is a good way to make some extra money too.

. . . . ...... hey Reach! long time no see!!! I cut down my trips to the grocery store... I moved to a place which offers gas for 20 cents less than where I lived... (okay... being silly on this one... I was moving anyways!) We quit eating out so often... My job is actually paying less than my old job.... but things seem to be working out okay... We are very budget conscious.... my girls are well aware of the budget and are wonderful at thinking up alternatives when we want to do something....

Well, gas just jumped the equivalent of around 42 cents per gallon today (they went up 11.5 cents per litre ... 3.79 litres to the gallon) Honestly, if we didn't have as many kids, we would seriously look at a smaller vehicle ... but unfortunately our minivan is the most ideal for holding 5 carseats!!!

I'm with ya there!!! Thankfully come December, when my little one turns 8, carseats will no longer be an issue. I might try to keep her in hers a little bit longer because she is smaller in size then the rest of my kiddos were at that age. And with seat belt laws and air bags that are in most cars children under the age of 12 shouldn't sit in the front seat anyway. Compact, smaller more fuel efficient cars are just not made for larger families. But on a brighter note - Hubby is going back to work on the 7th of July. We are hopeful that it is for LONG term and not just so they can let them go permanently. School starts up in 8 weeks again and I'm hopeful that an Aide position will open up, which will bring in a little extra $$$. Blessings, Garsy

Hondas are known for the longevity, there are people who purposely buy hondas over 100k miles because a lot of people like to drive them to 300,000 + miles. used hondas have actually gone up in price. I am not sure if the hydrogen car is the best bet for the future anyway.

We just bought ourselves a mini-van, to save some money over our big full size Ford van. And because our other vehicles were junk.

. . . . ..... ooooo, cool Reach! Solar panels are very cool.... I heard a story about a very small town who creates their own electricity most of the year... I think from windmills... they sell the extra they don't use back to the power company.... in the winter... they only have to buy a small amount back... so it works towards the positive over the average of a year. I'd love to live in the country.... to have a huge garden and put up what we can... and sell the rest...

Our church attendance & even membership seems to be down because of gas prices. Especially one income families who were driving from another town to attend.

My husband's mileage at the church just got raised from .41 to .48 cents a mile. That will help out. I could check another one up there now--we got a vehicle that gets better gas mileage. We now have a mini-van instead of a full sized van. We had to put in a bench seat to make it seat eight instead of seven, but it's big enough to hold all of us and even has room behind the back seat to take all of our stuff when we go on vacation, if we can afford to go anywhere, that is.

We are definitely mowing our lawn less, and our neighbors are too. Brian's new zippy little Subaru uses less than half the gas his truck was using. That's nice. Very nice. Gas is up to $4.35 here.

How do you do online piano lessons? Our gas went down from 3.99 to 3.95. Bj's has it for about 3.85 but I don't have a card and get enough points at the grocery stores to get it for cheaper there. I filled up last week for $3.25 with 70 cents off a gallon.

Still paying less than 4$/gal here. Seeing alot of older vehicles on the road. Wondering if people are driving older vehicles then dropping insurance to liability only to save $.

Around here, people *usually* don't carry more than liability if they don't have a lien on the vehicle. We do carry comprehensive on all our vehicles, because in NY you need that if you hit a deer, but we wouldn't carry collision on a car we didn't have a lien on.

ORIGINAL: Grace-N-Mercy We're still paying under $4.00/gallon, too, for the most part. We're seeing a lot of SUV's and trucks for sale and a lot more compact vehicles. In fact, I saw the smallest car EVER getting onto the interstate the other day. We're also seeing more motorcycles and scooters. Almost backed out in front of a small short white car that zipped past me while backing out of Sonic. It was shorter than my back window.

My kids aren't doing as many organized sports as they usually do. For exercise and fun they're finding things to do in town. This will be the first year I have not gone all over this valley (and a little beyond) to watch baseball, softball, soccer games or to watch a road race. We are also not taking a vacation out of town. My husband will take some days off this year, but we won't travel. He only took about three days off last year, so he needs to take time off even if we just stay around here. I'll admit that can be difficult to truly take off while staying in town when you're a pastor, but we're going to swing it somehow. My oldest daughter found a job here in town, so now she can walk to work or ride her bike. That's helped her enormously. BTW, I would LOVE to pay under $4 a gallon. We go to a nearby town (20+ miles away) tomorrow to visit: the orthdontist, dentist, grocery store, wal-mart, hardward store, resale store, tire place, driver's licence office, and anything else I can think of that we need to do while we're over there. We are limiting these trips to twice a month, and if I could get them to only once a month, I would.
