We pretty much went all over Manhattan and a few other places besides, and I noticed that most of the tourists took the Shuttle and the 6 train between 42nd and 59th. We wanted to get beyond that, but I think many out of towners feel uncomfortable riding the subway elsewhere.

Yeah, but it's 15 short blocks. We used to walk from 52nd and 1st over to Lexington and 40th on a regular basis, and I'm not in the best of shape.

I actually happen to sometimes walk almost the reverse of this exact route at night while I'm heading home. It takes about 20 minutes. If you go through Times Square, add another five (gazillions of people); if you plan on taking pictures, add maybe ten on top of that.

For the record...I don't think Nathan's hot dogs are all that. The vendors on the street corners have dogs that are just as good and way cheaper! (Although I do love Coney Island!)

DId you get my message about visiting Times Square Church? Services are Sundays: 10am 3pm and 6pm. Tues. 7pm and Friday in the Annex at 7pm. There's also a Youth Rally at 7pm every Friday in the main sanctuary called The Gate. 51st Street & Broadway
You can also go to Bryant Park, Toys R Us, Border's, The Metropolitian Opera.
You can also take the bus from Port Authority to places in Jersey. You could go to Garden State Plaza Mall and go to the HUGE AMC theathre to see a movie for 11 bucks. LOL!
All you do is go to the port authority and take the 163 bus to the Garden State Plaza Mall. It's like 3.20 or something each way. THe bus comes once an hour so if you stay late at the mall, you dont' want to miss your bus. Although there are plenty other ways of getting back to nyc, just not the port authoirity in TImes Square. Other buses will take you to the Port Authoiry at the GWB but um, you don't want to have to take the train anytime during your tiip. I grew up in NYC and still don't take the train when I go there. I never liked the subway even since I was five years old. I'm 28 now.
on Sundays there's this gopsel brunch at BB Kings. I don't know too much about it but you could check their website. There's also these boats that take you on a sightseeing cruise of NYC. I was supposed to go sometime this month but can't. Also, there is a Block Party BBQ this Saturday in some park over on 23rd street I'm going to.

Bryant Park may just be my favorite place in New York. I loved going to the library and then just sitting in Bryant Park vegging.

I did not get your message, Mrs Jonz, but thanks for those tips. Dh says we will be going to church both of the Sundays we are there. Since the whole purpose of us going is for Teen Challenge, of course we will be going to hear David Wilkerson. Teen Challenge folks will be coming from all over the world for this conference and celebration, so I'm quite sure it will be extremely crowded.
I just got our Wicked tickets in the mail the other day. I think we could have bought a car for what we paid!! (not really, but it sure feels like it). Now, at least, my 13 year old dd will be happy - and that's worth a TON! :)
If we have the time, we'll have to check out Bryant Park too. Thanks for that tip as well!

Silly me, I didn't read your post. I just read the headline. I didn't know you were already going to TSC. You should go around the corner to have some REAL New York Pizza. Rays baby!!! It's on 8th ave. right around the corner of the church. (To the right when you go out of the sanctuary doors.)
Madame T's Wax Museum might be a cool place to go. I'm gonna go there one day when I get enough money to take my nephews.
Um, what else?? Try the mall in Jersey it's tax free!! I also think you can some kind of discount at Macy's if you're out of the country. I suggest you find out about that before you go cuz' you may need to get some special pass. (You have to take that pass to the office in Macy's to get your discount.)
If you like the mall...you'll like Jersey! Man, there a gazillion malls in Jersey and they are all very close to each other.
Now, like I said it's very easy to go to the mall from NYC. And it's VERY easy to travel from each mall.
Okay, if you go to the Garden State Plaza Mall - The larger mall. The cool thing to do there is the movies. You can go from there to Bergen Mall or Riverside Square Mall. Both are easily accessible if you take what is known as a the Spanish Busses. (Small buses run by a spanish company.) You can take those to either mall. Just tell the dude driving that's where you want to go. Or just take the 756 bus. (This bus takes exact fare - No change given back). Also, this bus goes direclty into the Riverside Square Mall where you can go to The Cheesecake Factory, and a couple other cool restaurants and Bloomingdale's. At the Bergen Mall, (the much smaller mall) they have Century 21 among other smaller shops.
Oh, I'd rather go to Garden State Plaza to eat though. They have, besides the food court, California Pizza Kitchen, Johnny Rockets, ColdStone, Chilli's, On The Border, Gran Luxe Cafe, and more. Your kids would love that mall. They have Forever 21, The Gap, Old Navy...etc.
Anyway, although you're going to be in NYC I say take a day and spend it in a mall in Jersey!!!
Mall opens at 10am. You can catch the 163 bus from the Port Authority on 42nd street to the Garden State Plaza and take the 756 to the other malls I mentioned. Going back to Jersey you need to know what time the last 163 leaves from the mall!! You don't want to have to travel to the George Washington Bridge and take the subway to 42nd street...I wouldn't recommend it. So, if you decide to go to Jersey, you can always find your way around just by asking just about anyone how to get where you want to go. I would suggest asking someone who is fluent in English, is a young adult or teenager. They know how to get around Jersey. (Anyone at the bus stop)

I like Nathan's in Garden State Plaza. Really, mall food is better prepared and fresh. From Nathan's to Mcdonald's, cuz they are constantly cooking. The food in NY isn't that great (quality) depending on where you get it.

bryant park is very awesome...in the summer they have free movies at night (monday night i think, it may change this year..i haven't looked at the schedule.) they are usually old movies..it's so great to take a blanket and just sit with your SO and snuggle and watch.
in the winter, there is free ice skating. i finally did it this past winter and had a blast.
also, there is free wi-fi, so you can check your emails and such in the park.
of course, people watching is great too.
Does Good Morning America still have concerts there?
Another favorite place of mine is Riverside Park. We looked at the parks and rec website to figure out what was going on where. Very helpful. In fact, we had quite a few websites we consulted to help us find activities. We even took our lap top on the trip, and I doubt I will ever go on vacation without it again.

We did the Salsa Dancing a couple of times at Riverside, and it was a blast. Here's some info that's on the parks and rec site:

I just realized this is scheduled before you go on your trip, but they might schedule another before then. Nevertheless, that's a great website for activities, and usually they cost nothing or very little.

Sorry for the numerous posts, but for some reason it's taking forever when I hit the edit button.
I found my answer about GMA in Bryant park. I guess they still do the concerts on Friday morning. Those are fun, and it's also fun to go to Rockefeller Center to see the Today Show. But you have to get there about 5:30am. I went a couple of times and really enjoyed just talking to the people in line. My older daughters, who were 15 and 17 at the time, went about 8 or 9 times to the Today Show. They had a blast, and usually they were done and back by 9:00am.
What I really liked in Bryant Park was the piano at noon. Oh, and if you go to Bryant Park, check out the restroom. It's like no other park restroom I've ever seen.

I left in '92 and things change. But I suggest you see Harlem - 125 street had a lot of vendors with interesting stuff to buy. If you sew, there is a whole district with fabric stores downtown. Smaller upscale boutiques are more interesting than Macy's. I used to enjoy walking around the dif ethnic neighborhoods and Central Park. IMO, Empire State is just one more tall office bld. No way would I drive to Niagara - the US side is kinda sleazy (or was) and the water dirty. I agree about going around - not up - the statue of liberty. long lines and lots of stairs. If you're into art, there are lots of galleries. Don't forget, the tourist places are for tourists and they aren't NYC.

Yes there are other Nathans elsewhere but the one at Coneys (romantacism or not) is a part of New York History and hot dog history. And FAO Schwartz (Im not possitive)went chapter 13 and i thought they were closing the store. Any current New Yorkers can answer that one (last time I lived in or been to NYC was when Kotch was Mayor)

It's fun to just ride the subway out to Yankee Stadium from Manhattan and then see it as the train comes up out of the ground. If you do that, be sure to take the express so you don't stop in some pretty rough areas before you get there. Same thing with the bus to the Bronx Zoo. Take the express that drops you off at the zoo. A word of caution about going to Yankee Stadium. You cannot take anyting in like a backpack. Those are forbidden.

Well, I've got exactly 36 hours before we leave for the airport. I've got to clean my house, do all the laundry and pack! Not to mention work 11 hours tomorrow, sleep at least 12 (6/6), run a few errands tonight, deliver Avon tomorrow......
But our itinerary is done! Thank you all so very much for all the tips and suggestions! You've been so helpful! I'll be sure to post about all we did when we return.
