Just a question for you guys who blog. What do you write about your hubbies as far as details go? I'm getting mixed messages about what I can reveal. I wouldn't write about dates of movement though DH is on a Provincial Reconstruction Team so it's not as if his movements carry the same significance as others' might. But what about country and area, that sort of thing?

I personally didn't blog about it...or talk much online about it. I referred to things in "terms" not real names (such as "he's downrange", "boots are in the sand", etc). Part of that extra precaution was because of the time he was gone (two years ago) and our specific posts requests. Of course part of the time I didn't even know where he was so that helped...lol.

of course you didn't mean to make anyone feel bad! No worries Harvie.

YUP...we know you didn't!!!! I just didn't want her to feel bad so I pointed out what I was able to do (which was very very limited). I would have loved to have been in a situation like yours where I could have done more every day (or even every week) like that...I am very glad you are able to

Space A travel question ...

So, have any of you traveled Space A? We were thinking about driving to Travis AFB and catching a flight to Elmendorf AFB in Jan/Feb ... and wondered if anyone had done much Space A traveling??

Ok....so I guess I can officially join this thread now!

In fact, on Sunday when Ray and I were driving home from our honeymoon, he got a call that his unit was being activated to help with Gustav relief. Sheesh! Well at least it waited until AFTER the honeymoon!

I am assuming IL's = in laws

My Honey is currently packing his stuff for his 12 month government sponsored mission trip to Iraq. He gets on the plane to do the look see in the sand tomorrow. He will be in a whole new world come friday. He is due back the 14th from that then the unit starts signing in.

Honey will be on a plane out of Georgia this evening for his two week vacation in Iraq. He will have a week between his getting back from this trip and his actually "signing in".

I believe most of you know he works with computers and paperwork(think leave and pay and awards). He came home yesterday in fits. He actually got to meet most of the M-day troops for the first time.

I mentioned a while way back that his NCOIC, whom he was greatly relying on because he had NEVER worked with the unit before, was down and out due to thyroid cancer(he is not doing well emotionally right now. It had gone further than they had hoped). The active duty folks(only a handfull in the office) only 2 are still going. the balance have all come up with medical issues. The 2 still going? they were the 2 lowest ranking folks in the office and told Honey that they never handled any of the "big" things.

The M-Day(that's 1 weekend a month 2 weeks a year folks) tell Honey the same thing. the core folks(the ones that are all sick or filing retirement papers) did the work and either never let them do anything or only gave them typists work. Honey is going overseas with an untried- untrained team. He did go to bat for them telling someone that they had JOBS to do and were not the "typing pool" from WWII. So he is working on building relationships but he is so frustrated with the situation right now.

His new NCOIC is a man he trusts and has worked with before but the new NCOIC is sitting there with him shaking his head because they are both Green and do not KNOW the soldiers. OH and the new NCOIC said YES to the deployment less than 2 weeks ago folks! his family got TWO WEEKS NOTICE! I could just cry for them. The company waited in hopes that the NCOIC with the thyroid issue was a benign remove it go on the meds thing. HE was praying that he'd be okay to go by the time they had to hit the sand. Not happening.

Wow ... we got 24 days notice that my wonderful DH was getting redeployed back to Iraq .... of course, that's less than 60 days since he got back from Iraq, so it did take us by surprise -- we didn't think he had to go back for deployment #5 until March. Now it looks like Feb/March will be deployment #6.

The powers that be contacted us this past weekend to see if he wanted to volunteer to help with Gustav "since he had a few weeks down time" before he returned to Iraq. They seemed to have forgotten all that pesky pre-deployment training and paperwork he has to do. SHEESH. Needless to say, once reminded of that, they decided he was "probably too busy to help."

Anyway, we've been looking into vacation options for when DH is back (December/January) in between deployments (the USAF loves these 3 month deployments with a month or two off, then right back again) ... and we were wondering how simple it would be to catch a Space A flight from California to Alaska in January. (Yes, Alaska in January ... we really ARE insane.) I am willing to be adventurous and try it, but my wonderful DH thinks it will be just simpler to just ... gasp ... buy plane tickets. (Especially since we'd have a 4 hour drive to get to Travis AFB, anyway.) How are Januaries in Alaska, anyway?

if you want "for sure" plans then buy tickets... space-a can be hard to do sometimes. coming from Germany to my moms (tx) while Paul was deployed took me two months to actually get on a flight...and they did two per week to that base. From TX back to Germany took me over a month and Paul ended up getting home from deployment a week before the kids and I finally got back out there.

I definitely like "for sure" plans better than waiting ... especially since we're 4 hours from the closest AFB.

yeah we were a six hour drive to the nearest from my moms house. When we did finally get out, they had to reschedule at the last minute for the next morning...luckily my brother lives in Austin (less then an hour from San Antonio) so the kids and I crashed at his place overnight

also wanted to add...it's quite a comfy ride if you get to ride in the cabin of C-5's, but I know many on space a flights that had to ride in the cargo jump seats on C-5's....not very comfortable, esp with kids and from Germany to the US

Okay ladies, no deployed hubby, but I am in charge of Prayer and Care this year for MOPS and really am feeling burdened for the moms whose hubbies are away- what types of things do you think would be helpful for that time? I mean, we can't supply meals for 6 months to a year- lol, but maybe have some men willing to go along to a mechanic, take care of the kiddos for some down time- I'm very open to suggestions. We are really good with new moms- they get 8 meals, but I'm feeling quite burdened about this... You can PM me if you think this is derailing the thread!

Thanks!

Not sure room~ We aren't really "there" yet but then we are also not on base/post and not a member of the actual "unit" so I doubt anyone out that way knows we exist. That and the fact that we are "officer" and being prior enlisted it seemed that most stuff was organized for the lower/mid grade enlisted wives needs and was usually run by the Officers and NCOIC wives.

Nothing wrong with that- it is just the way I saw things. We only ever did things on one base where the wives were "No Rank Allowed" and that was in the Northern VA area, you know the DC area. That shocked me.

Any way- I have been on 3 sides of the game as the oldest child of an E-8 navy man and the wife of an enlisted soldier(to E-9 and 10 years service) and then Warrant Officer(to CWO3 and 10 years). Been there done that got the T shirt and wanting my 30 years service retirement pay...

Only place I have not been before believe it or not is this whole Deployment thing. Odd huh, 19.5 years he BEGS to go and the one time he says he is not gonna volunteer they tap him.

from an email from him:

quote:

It is 122 in the sun here today. If you want to know what it feels like turn the oven on to 350 when it is preheated open the door really fast while your face is near the opening. Except it feels like that over your entire body.

I am betting he is so glad that he works with computers that like it cool now... even if it means he isn't out being GI Joe.

Jennifer...having a man to help with repairs/go along to a mechanic is a GOOD idea. Seriously. If you read my blog a couple months ago...you know why I'm so on board with that idea.
In the same vein, having a man who is willing to help with home repairs (for those that live off post) is a good idea too. With that though, I would say that the wife of said man needs to come along..but that's just me.
Help with occasional childcare is also great. Not only that, but a list of those willing to help with childcare for doctor's appts/dentist appts, shopping...everyday things like that kwim?
Company is always welcome too! "Hey, you and the kids wanna come over for lunch?"...it can be VERY easy to become isolated as a deployed spouse.
That's all I can think of off hand. I'll ask my gf's if you'd like
Sandy
