you are correct.

The strangest clothes I have seen in Church were worn by a missionary couple from New Guinea who wore ceremonail dress from the tribe they were mininstering to.

Even Easter morning could not out do that.

Thanks

Well....let's see.

Sometimes I wear my black leather mini-skirt with my white chiffon see- through blouse. And my black leather boots with 4 inch heels top this ensemble off quite nicely. My 6 inch in diameter gold earrings look striking and add quite a nice compliment to the outfit.

On days when I don't "dress up" I wear my ripped, tight, low riding jeans with a tube top. Foot wear is usually sneakers, sandals, or barefoot. I shower if I "feel" like it. If not, I don't bother. Same goes for brushing my teeth and combing my hair.

I have a thing for dying my hair green, purple, or orange. I've had several compliments on my appearance.

Well if I wore a black leather mini-skirt there would understandably be rioting in the pews.

Why? After all, it's just clothes.

it's all good but for the chiffon. chiffon was invented by pagans to represent spirit guides.

I'm going to purposely disregard all the banter and answer the OP re: the clothes we wear to church and a biblical mandate.

I dress up for church. That means I normally wear a dress. Why? Because it is part of what I see as reverence, how I am to conduct myself when coming to worship with others. Sunday worship is a time set aside for the corporate worship of God. That worship should elicit a right response from one who is a follower of God.

Does scripture mandate that? Only indirectly. It is the reverence, awe, respect of God that leads me to conclude how I should dress.

Do I judge how others dress? No. It is definitely not something to quibble about. But if asked, or if there were a discussion, I would love to share my views.

Why do we dress up for anything? for the prom? for a wedding? for a funeral? for a party?

Something to think about. . . and we all need to think more than we do.

you can clean up for a prom, a wedding, a funeral, a court room etc, but the only way to clean up for God's presence is the through the blood of Jesus.

In our church you will see everything from shorts to three piece suits. My dd and I wear dresses, as this is what my hubby prefers. I do not mind...I like getting dressed up every now and then.

Supposedly, anyway, we go to church to honor and praise God, in addition to learning His will for us.

Actually seeking to honor and praise God and learn His will for me is something I try to do every minute of my life. So by your reasoning, I should always be dressed up. I “go to church” (meet with the church!) to spur one another on toward love and good deeds and to encourage one another.

quote:

Our type of clothing is purely tradition and cultural relevance and nothing to do with what the bible says about corporate worship.

Yep. You know what Jesus said about traditions! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: “’These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men.”

quote:

If you wear jeans in a church where everyone is dressed up, you are a distraction.

Wow! I guess some folks are easily distracted! That really just seems silly.

quote:

Sunday worship is a time set aside for the corporate worship of God. That worship should elicit a right response from one who is a follower of God.

To you that may be true, but it is not a Biblical mandate. there will come a time, indeed it has already come when you won’t worship on that mountain or in Jerusalem, but you will worship in spirit and in truth. We are not to set aside a certain time or place for worship, we are to worship everyday, continually turning our hearts and minds toward the Lord, offering our bodies as a living sacrifice and doing everything whether in word or deed for the glory of the Lord! There is nothing in the NT about corporate worship services, instead the NT speaks about coming together in order to edify one another and to break bread together. Worship at all times and gather to encourage one another.

quote:

Why do we dress up for anything? for the prom? for a wedding? for a funeral? for a party?

Sure, we dress up for formal occasions because of social conventions and traditions. But we are not to follow man made traditions in the church. Furthermore, the church, the body of Christ is to function as a family. Do you dress up when you get together with your family?

I have heard people use the example of: “If you were going to meet the president, wouldn’t you dress up?” My response is: “Not if the president was my father and we were getting together for a family get together with all my brothers and sisters.”

quote:

Something to think about. . . and we all need to think more than we do.

Yes, we sure do!

That may be theoretically correct [although I doubt there looking at other peoples clothes could be determined as being the reason for goin].

However, I am still human and I look at other people and I like to fit in, when possible.

Having said that - I am often the only one wearing shorts

Anybody who want to share their views about what I am wearing and they don't like it can but me clothes. We have a Nordstoms (sp?) in Hawaii now and there are soooooooooo many clothes that I would LOVE to but. But I cannot afford.

Then this same person can drive me too and from church every Sunday. I don't drive and even if I did I would not be able to afford a car. I walk down hill to get to a bus stop and back up when I come home.

Posting blind... We need to remember that even in our t-shirts and jeans, we are dressing better than at least 50% of the world's population. There are many who cannot afford to dress as we do... we are the richest country in the world.

That said, I do try to dress nicely on Sunday mornings, though that may include slacks and a blouse and not necessarily a dress. On Sunday evenings, it's jeans and a nice shirt. Wednesdays are for whatever I wore to work.

Ooh. Good point!

How shameful that those poor Ethiopians would dare to worship God in those rags, huh. . .?

I go to a little country church in the woods. While some men and women choose to wear blue jeans (not a problem for me) I choose to wear dressy clothes. My grandmother taught me that you should dress up for the Lord on Sundays She has passed away so I often think of her on sunday mornings. She had to look the best she possibly could.

There is no biblical rule for church dress. However, out of respect for your congregation you should dress modestly, as to not take any attention away from the main purpose of attending church in the first place. :)

I grew up Freewill Baptist and the preacher had a rule that one couldn't preach in the pulpit unless he was wearing a coat and tie. Period.

If you were a deacon or trustee, you had to at least wear a tie. If you worked with the children during VBS women had to wear dresses, skirts, or pants so we didn't create a 'sinful' look to visitors.

Now I go to a Southern Baptist church where the preacher wears shorts, tee shirt, and flip flops. I love it.

Our "southern baptist" pastor wear suits, primarily......but, has been doing an "open collar" with a jacket more often. Doesn't really matter to me what he wears....

As for me, in the summer, you bet Iam going for "comfort".....a comfortable pair of dress slacks and a nice golf shirt (some golf shirts that I have are as nice as my nicest dress shirts)... is the "primary" mode of dress for men at our church in the summer.

In the cooler times of the year (when it's ONLY 70 degrees outside), you'll see suits, shirt/sportcoat, or just a shirt/tie, or just a nice shirt and dress pants.

And, a fair amount of jeans....but, I VERY rarely wear jeans....I own 2 pairs of them, and have had those 2 same pair for years, as I rarely wear them anywhere....cause usually it's "docker"-type khakis or dress slacks that I am wearing....

quote:

grandmother taught me that you should dress up for the Lord on Sundays

that's what my wife was "raised" to do, as well.

What happens? If you dress too "casually", people will criticize...

THEN, if you dress "too nicely" in some churches, then people will "criticize" as well (since you are "showing off" your wealth...and, be "judged" for "conspicuous consumption" and "greedy" and the rest.....

In the end....there is no way to "win" at this game....

Hello everyone...

I was wondering if there was any scriptural evidence against wearing hats in church for men..
I attend a baptist church and wore a baseball cap yesterday during evening service.. a deacon of the church approached me right before the pastor gave his sermon and confronted me about wearing the hat, and referring to a sign of respect to God.. and then told me he'd give me a passage later showing me what the Bible said about it..

I welcomed his challenge because I am only interested in the truth and I tend to give weight to scriptures, and not so much to the traditions of society, as 2 Tim 3:16 states that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, correcting, rebuking, and training in righteousness"...

So after service he confronts me with Corinthians 11 and points out that men should not wear head coverings.. but then I'm looking at the passage and it seems to be speaking in context of women's hair overall.. the pastor at this point is kind of overhearing the discussion and sits down to hear us hash it out and he didn't seem to be convinced that there is a mandate stating not to wear hats, and even citing that the Jews wore hats during prayer and worship, but then also admitted that he'd need to research the issue further...

Just thought I'd get some thoughts from you guys on the matter and see if there's any other insight that can be offered from scripture as well..

Thanks for any thoughts on the subject. =)

Y'know, I was doing some thinking about this as I was replying to the abortion thread...part of what I wear is determined by what I am doing.

If I am simply a member, there to worship among the congregation, I may dress casually (slacks/nice dress shorts - depending upon the weather - maybe jeans, shirt - possibly a tie, even though there are only three times a man should have something around his neck; his wedding, his funeral and his hanging...).

If I am there on "official business" (preaching, performing liturgy, etc...), I am in collar, without exception.

There may be other times when I am in collar (ordinations, installations, etc) but generally, I opt for "comfortable"...which excludes fishnets and high heels...

In another thread, someone made the claim that it would be wrong to wear casual clothes to church instead of more formal clothing -

The same goes for wearing tee shirts and blue jeans to church (if you do indeed own better clothing).

My question is, what are your thoughts about the clothes we wear to church? Is there a biblical mandate?
I'm more interested in the casual vs. formal discussion, not so much the modesty issue, but if you want to discuss that, then go for it!

this is stupid...

anyone that told me to wear formal clothes cause its church i'd view him as what you call a "churchian" and i dont care one bit if i'd be wrong in my judgement. its JUST clothes

all need to wear formal clothes come from insecurities rather than some logical reasoning. i dare anyone to prove me wrong

As has been stated by others on this thread, sometimes a Christian will feel convicted that, by wearing formal clothing, the best they have, they are showing God reverence in light of who He is. And given the message of Romans 14, I applaud them for following their conviction!

Though I would agree with you, if you were to say that any need to say all Christians had to wear formal clothes; just as I would disagree with the claim that all Christians should dress casually.
