No, no...his cover of "Tainted Love" is really good--gives a totally different meaning to it. The Soft Cell version, is of course, fab.

Ben Folds - Tiny Dancer (Orig: Elton John) His Elton sparkly glasses are killer.
Ryan Adams phenomenally haunting cover of Wonderwall (Orig: Oasis)
(I think this one is my very favourite) Gary Jule's rendition of Mad World (Orig: Tears For Fears)
Barenaked Ladies - Lovers in a Dangerous Time (Orig: Bruce Cockburn)
The Dixie Chicks' take on Stevie Nick's Landslide.
Rufus Wainright's Hallelujah (Orig: Leonard Cohen) - tough call on that one, though. John Cale's version was good, too. Didn't care for Jeff Buckley's take.

And the Gary Jules remake of Mad World was quite good also!

I've also heard quite a few covers of Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds. IMO the only one I heard that was not a total trash was Billy Idol's version. Idk, maybe that's 'cos it was originally written for him to sing. The only other band name I can remember who covered it was Machine Head, and they wrecked it bad. Another cover of it by a band who's name escapes me did great on it but wrecked it at the end when they started doing weird voices. I just hope Marilyn Manson never decides to cover it.

Got a chance to see Joey Ramones grave at Hollywood Forever Cemetary when they had their annual "Dia de los Muertos" festival (see wiki for an explanation of that hispanic tradition). His gravestone is a square block of black marble(?) topped with an eight foot (?) tall statue of him playing his guitar. Since it was "Dia de los Muertos" they had the grave decorated with his favorite foods/drinks which consisted of Corona Beer and YOOHOO (the chocolate drink)!
Back on topic: Billy Idol also did a cover of the Tommy James song "Mony Mony"?

One album of mostly covers that I enjoy is the soundtrack to Me, Myself & Irene. Bad movie, but great soundtrack. In addition to a good Pete Yorn track, there are several mostly good covers of Steely Dan songs. Also, someone mentioned Ramones remakes earlier, and the album Acid-Eaters is chock full of good Ramones remakes ranging from Jefferson Airplane to Dylan. Their version of My Back Pages truly rocks.

I agree except its Steve Walsh. Steve Morse played with Kansas as their guitarist on a couple of late 80s albums. Mose also played with the Dixie Dregs & Deep Purple. Walsh was Kansas' lead singer until 1980ish, was replaced by John Elefante (who produced many hard rock Christian albums) and returned when they reunited in the late 80s (with Steve Morse as the guitarist).
My preference for Kansas' version is probably due to me being a big fan of Kansas and my relative apathy toward The Showdown.
