Do you worry about picking up an infection if you have to visit a hospital?

No. You cannot be afraid of germs. They are on everything. There are people who try to disinfect everything and weaken their own immunity by doing so.

Absolutely.

But I have a compromised immune system.

If I didn't, I don't think I'd be as concerned.

Visiting as in going to see someone? No. I don't see that as a risk.

If you mean going in for a procedure? Absolutely! Because it is a risk. I don't obsess over it, but it is important to make sure the staff are taking the proper steps to prevent this.

Worry? No, but I know that the chances are high. Nearly every time I have had to take one of the kids in, or when my grandpa was in and we spent the day there waiting, or whatever, I have come down with something a day or two later. The place is absolutely teeming with germs, and is the source of most staph infections.

Our hospital has hand sanitizer posted on walls, and I make my kids and even my mom sanitize about every hour and when we leave. Also, we never play with the toys in doc's offices or hospitals.

I have a therapy dog. We visit nursing homes. A while back there was an outbreak of a nasty bacteria. There was talk around the therapy dog community if we should continue doing visits. We have continued. Yes, there is a chance of picking up "germs". However, that chance is quite slim. The benefit of us doing a visit is far greater.

I work at a hospital and of course you should be worried, to some extent. There will always be a risk whenever something invasive is done, but there are ways to reduce the risk. Starting with making everyone wash their hands will be a big part of cutting risk. I do it when patients ask even if I've just done it outside the door. Just think about it Staph. aureus is a common skin flora and some carry the MRSA variety on their skin. Then also think about what else those hands have been touching from other patients who may have something else. Gloves are designed to help further reduce risk of cross contamination, but you'd be surprised at how lax it can be at a hospital. I would consider the same for visitors as well. And I wouldn't want anyone coming by if they are sick. I also agree with the other poster about not playing with the toys that are in waiting rooms. Again, sick people having been touching them, sneezing on them, etc. You also cannot trust that those are cleaned regularly. That actually goes for much of the hospital. housekeeping is among the first departments to be cut if they are doing cuts in the amount of staff to save money.

Not really.

YES!! I almost have panic attacks! I wish that they would hand out masks and gloves at the doors of hospitals. I HATE going to a Hospital and only go when I have to - either to visit or as a patient. I'm a nervous wreck the entire time that I am there. I couldn't be a nurse if it paid $1000.00 an hour! But I'm very thankful that some people can be. We need them and appreciate them!

My Dad, who is now a quadraplegic, has to go to the hospital every few months. He will go in for one thing and, more often than not, contracts Staph Infection while he is there and has to stay even longer. This has even been life-threatening for him. It's a very real concern and is becoming too common nowadays.

Yes. I hate hospitals and doctor offices greatly. I get horribly anxious when going to any of them for any reason.

One should go only when necessary. Never go visit if YOU are ill. Try to avoid doorknobs[;)] anywhere. People complain about short stays, but you're less likely to catch an opportunistic infection at home.

smilingcutie -> RE: Do you worry about picking up an infection if you have to visit a hospital? (8/6/2008 11:34:02 PM)

Nope. I just make sure I wash my hands before I go, and right when I come out. Germs are everywhere.

PrincessDonna -> RE: Do you worry about picking up an infection if you have to visit a hospital? (8/9/2008 10:40:48 PM)

No. I just spent most of the last 20 days in the hospital with my husband. I didn't get sick once, not even with the tummy bug that went around our church! God is bigger than the boogeyman germs.[:D]

Did I wash my hands and use the hand sanitizer regularly? Yes. Constantly. But not because I was afraid *I* would pick up something...because I was concerned about protecting my husband from anything he might get. Still not overly worried about it...just using the common sense God gave us.

cindybode -> RE: Do you worry about picking up an infection if you have to visit a hospital? (8/9/2008 10:55:22 PM)

If I worried about that, I couldn't go to work.

Wash your hands, people.
