I feel sorry for Mary Lou Retton and all the others who won a gold at those games. They'll never know if they could have won at a full Olympics. But it's America's own fault for boycotting the Moscow Olympics.

I'm still get mad at President Carter when folks bring this up. All of the athletes worked hard and were ready to go and they were not allowed to compete. Some were able to go on to compete in the 1984 games but for some 1980 was their only shot.

And when all was said and done, did it really accomplish anything politically? Did it make a difference on what Russia did militarily? I think not. IMHO, it was not only the U.S. boycott of the 1980 games that made Russia and the Eastern Bloc boycott the 1984 games, BUT they were concerned there would be athletes and their families who would defect to the U.S. & Canada.

However, there have been more less publicised boycotts

Kerri's Vault was a big lie.

Please explain this. Kerri landed a vault on an sprained ankle & her team won the gold medal. Where's the lie? Are you talking about when it aired on US television?

I agree with you. Refusing to participate in the Moscow games did nothing but make the US look like morons. (As we generally do when we refuse to talk to a country we don't like very much.)

But in cases where an international meet was held in a western country the Soviet block would simply hold the athletes' families as hostages, basically. The parents of Katerina Witt (famous East German figure skater) were never able to see her compete overseas until the fall.

I loved watching his mom cheering him on! NBC had a camera on her while he was racing. It was great!!

Holy moly, did anyone see the Men's 400M freestyle relay race? That was an incredible finish! Great race to watch.

Although, if Phelps' swimsuit slipped any lower, they were going to have to start putting a ratings system on these games.

Personally I like the gymnastics, and I was amazed at how young the little girls looked from China. You have to wonder what kind of life they have, being taken from their families at such a tender age. They were so sweet. Sylvia was very saddened by how young they appeared to be, and wondered also about what sort of life they may have.

Oh my stars! I was thinking the same thing!! I was hoping the cameraman would focus on the upper body and head to prevent any . . . uh hem, "swimsuit malfunction"

I too wondered about this. These girls look so much younger than 16.

Did you catch the story about the 33 year old gymnast from East Germany?? Mot girls are out of the sport by the time they are in their late 20's & she's still competing. WOW!

I was very moved about the 33 year old gymnast's story, and about how her move to Germany had to do with her son and how he had prayed for his healing. What a great inspiration!

There's been some pretty big controversies over this. The Chinese national newspapers were referring to at least one girl as 14 only a few months ago, and suddenly all of them have passports saying that they are 16. There's been some suspicion that one is as young as 12 or 13.

The two leading American girls look like 16 year old young women. But I also liked the 33 year old German gymnast. By 20 most of these girls are looking at their last major international competition.

Of course we had at least one 14 year old in the Atlanta magnificent 7, but it was legal then.

I confess, this is wicked, but sometimes....

Watching the eventing and knowing that there were a bunch of golfers in despair as they watched their beloved golf course being mangled by a couple of hundred hooves

He is an incredible swimmer and when and if he wins all 8 gold medals, that will definitely be the favourite Olympic moment for many for years to come.

Oh they'll fix the golf course :)

Was it Paula Radcliffe that had to drop out of the last women's marathon? That was heartbreaking. Will be watching (think its Saturday or Sunday)

She's another amazing athlete.

I can't stand her ~ but yes, it was her that dropped out. Last I heard, she was unsure whether she would be able to run as she'd been bitten by a spider on her foot and caused her problems.

Oh, good for them! With the Hamm twins gone they were certainly underdogs, and I like to see a team celebrate a medal they worked really hard for, even if it isn't gold.

I remember when Paul Wylie won the silver medal for Men's Figure Skating. He was the 3rd man on the team, and he kept himself together when the other American favorites were falling apart. He wasn't supposed to make it to the top 5, but he proudly talked about winning the silver, instead of loosing the gold.

It's not just that... it's when they do their best and are happy that they've done their best, even if they've come away without a medal.

I didn't catch the race, but it was a swimming relay. The Brits didn't get a medal (if it was a final) but they did knock 4 seconds off the British record. Now that's something to be proud of whether you get a medal or not.

How about the kayaker from Togo winning the bronze medal today? There's a good moment, winning the country's first Olympic medal!

He was in first, but fell to 3rd right at the end, and was still just as happy as if he had won gold.

i guess the best moment would be when either the underdog that no one believes in gets it or when the person that has worked and worked and never gotten a medal gets it!

I can't speak for the whole nation, but I don't like her. I just get the feeling she plays the sympathy card more than some other competitors (did you know there was a Brit in Athens who'd broken his neck?).

Yes, she's had her problems, but so have others and they don't seem to go on about it as much as her.

And I can't think of anyone who had such a bad Olympics as she did in Athens who turned round pretty fast and published her autobiography!

I don't remember if I had heard about the Brit who broke his neck. I never paid attention to the runners unless there in the headlines or in the magazine.

The rest of her career is pretty amazing though, and to win so quickly after having a baby is just unbelievable.

Should be an exciting race! I mean as exciting as you can televise people running for 26.2 miles. LOL
