The ingredients in that particular mouthwash: #1: water #2: glycerin #3: flavor #4: zinc lactate #5: methylparaben #6: sodium saccharin #7: sucralose #8: propylparaben #9: poloxamer 407 Now, my normal mouthwash is this: #1: water #2: glycerin #3: flavor #4: poloxamer 407 #5: methylparaben #6: sodium saccharin #7: propylparaben #8: blue 1 My search is down, but that's a lot of sweet stuff. Good thing I don't swallow that stuff! And I'll just bet that the zinc lactate that was in the mouthwash I used is a binder, because ... Guess what -- I made a toasted soy-cheese sandwich, and the margarine was sweet, the cheese was sweet, and the sandwich is sweet. All that fuss over mouthwash! I am sorry -- I had no idea! But I got a lot of good and important, relevant information. I won't be using that mouthwash in the morning.

It looks like a vicious circle to me. I'd be inclinded to agree with you to a degree. It's highly possible that one of the meds I take for bipolar triggered my hypothyroidism. Having said that, I'd much rather be dealing with the side effects of hypothyroidism than bipolar. I think we just need to do individual research and pray and do what is right for us ~ which perhaps includes trying a medication to see if we suffer with the side effects that others have. Just cos they have side effects, doesn't mean we will have them too!

I never thought of mouth wash as medicine! Of course, I don't swallow it. But the reason I use it is because the PBC (primary biliary cirrhosis) weakens the body. One of the places that is weakened is the teeth and gums. As a result, I have to take measures in cleaning my teeth. I not only have to brush my whole mouth, not just my teeth, but I have to use a gum irrigator, which squirts fluid between the teeth and under the gum line. I use warm water mixed with mouth wash and hydrogen peroxide. I never thought of this as medicine, because I don't swallow any of it, but you are right; it is medicine, and it is somewhat absorbed into my body anyway. However, the absorption is in minute amounts, and not enough, I hope, to hurt my liver.

In what way are your teeth and gums weakened? Does your dentist say you should do all this? How about just using salt water?

PBC is a hereditary autoimmune disease. I don't know that much about it, really, except that it weakens various parts of the body, making them susceptible to disease. I read that one of the areas of attack is the teeth & gums, and since I used to be a dental assistant, I knew some things I could do to help myself and started doing them. My dentist agreed with it, when I told him what I did, except he suggested a different tooth brush. I tried his tooth brush for six months, hated it, and went back to my choice; that is all I am doing differently. Bluntly, most of the time, I don't think about the PBC. I do what I must to do the right things, but I am Alfred E Newman about it -- "What? Me worry?" toward it. I don't know. Things crop up sometimes regarding it, but while I do what I must, I am not going to worry about it. To me, it's a waste of time and energy. No one knows how to treat it, doctors have lied to me and about me to get me on liver transplant lists, and I have "fired" every doctor I have had for it because they have no clue how to treat it. I figure if they leave me alone, I will live a longer, happier, healthier life. My dentist? He's docile about it. He has nothing to lose.

I also have a hereditary autoimmune disorder. Even though teeth and gums can be affected, I've never had any trouble. What particular teeth/gum problems have you had, that you felt the need to treat them with peroxide and a mouthwash?

Well, my gums have receded. Since I am 59, that may be common, but it seem excessive to me. I have also already lost 8 teeth, but of course, 4 were wisdom teeth. Further, the enamel is not holding up well, and I have constant trouble with my tongue that must be tended all the time. They don't know what that is, but it is almost assuredly connected with the PBC. And it's a royal pain in the neck (or should I write mouth? ) when I forget to take my self-prescribed vitamin Bs.

I was thinking the same as stellaluna. A sea salt rinse instead of the mouthwash.

ORIGINAL: Kat_D Abiyah, every time I see this thread on the main page it says "Strange - - everything tastes" and I always think..."like chicken." Ha! I could have wished!! quote:
ORIGINAL: stellaluna A weak sea salt rinse may be exactly what you need. I don't know what problem you're having with your tongue, but you need a certain amount of bacteria in your mouth to keep your tongue...normal? Too much mouthwash, or some mouthwashes themselves, kill the bacteria and cause problems with your tongue. I used the Crest ProCare twice and my tongue went furry for a few days. After a couple of weeks, I performed my own little experiment by using it again--same furry tongue. Anyway, sea salt will fix that or you could try something like Biotene, which doesn't have alcohol. quote:
ORIGINAL: manda59 I was thinking the same as stellaluna. A sea salt rinse instead of the mouthwash. We sure have plenty of sea salt around here to try that, but I'm not sure about it. When I have an allergic reaction to the foods that cause the main problem, my tongue sometimes cracks and bleeds. It has deep gashes in it all the time, probably from the times when I have reacted. The idea of salt in those cracks -- interesting, possibly painful, but maybe it is worth a try. Indeed, my mouthwash of choice is Crest ProCare and the Crest over-night kind (the one that made everything taste sweet when I used it in the morning instead of at night), but I have had this problem since long before I started using it. I think I will try, for three-four days, just using the gum irrigator with plain warm water after rinsing my mouth with warm salt water. I will see if there is a change. It's worth trying. Oh -- and I had never heard of Biotene. Is it a mouth wash?

Abiyah, I was just wondering, are you, or will you be, a candidate for a liver transplant?

Well, I don't know. The doctor who got me on the initial list (in preparation for the liver recipient list) did it by lying about me. She made the progression of the PBC look worse than it really was back then by writing on my patient record I had symptoms I had told her clearly and repeatedly that I did not have. When she left her documents in the office, I read what was on the paper for the that day. I had a cow. It finally struck me what she had done and why she had instructed me to say particular things to the people I appeared before. She had asked me if I had pruritus (strong, continued itchiness) yet, and I told her I did not. She asked me this repeatedly, to which I repeatedly answered no. So then she started scratching herself -- a lot. The whole thing was ridiculous. Any imbecile would have known she was trying to get me to feel itchy by doing that while she continued to ask about it. I knew that pruritus is a symptom of a stage of the liver ailment, and she had an agenda. After telling her over and over that I was not there, she wrote down, on my medical record, that I had pruritus! I went to the desk and demanded that her notes be removed, but they said she had left, and they could not change what she had written. She stopped being my doctor right then. So, I don't know. I am 59. There are a lot of people younger than me who need livers. I am not sure I will be going there. Besides, I feel good, I work, and life is good. Even the diabetes is nonsymptomatic, as far as I can tell. I seriously doubt that the PBC will kill me. I will more likely just die of old age. Or onriness!!!! Bwahahahahahahaha! In the meantime, I am doing what I can to treat the PBC myself.

Salt is a natural preservative - it is what they used to use to preserve meat in the old days before fridges were invented. So its effect on your tongue should be to make it better, prevent infection etc
