We named ours Pioneer Christian School. My ds2 has it written on his high school diploma. We named it that because we feel like we are forging the way in homeschooling in this area.

With my firstborn we talked about naming our 'school', but never really settled on anything. His diploma had "Raber Family Homeschool" on it. But my young munchkins wanted to have a name and a mascot, so we are now Forestdale Academy (the name of our street) and our mascot is an eagle. I am going to surprise them with T-shirts and other stuff with our name and logo on it this fall.

The unofficial papers that comes with our official intent paper work has a bit that talks about the naming of your home school. it said something like when choosing a school name remember that you cannot change the name later and though three apples academy might sound cutesey right now as you have three elementary age children, it might not sound so impressive when you have 3 highschool scholars who are looking at attending ivy league colleges.
I thought that was probably the BEST advice ever given by a government run anything.

I never have named our school. When I was being homeschooled we named our school, but I thought having a name was kind of corny. If my kids ever ask to do that, we probably will, but otherwise I don't see the point.

I think having a name would be nice... as long as it was a name the kids could be proud of. When they are asked what school, or what grade they are in..... their response is "I'm home schooled" and I can tell by the way they say it (their tone and their body language) that they are "explaining" why they don't go to school and they are not in a particular grade by saying they are homeschooled. If they could just give the school name, then maybe they wouldn't feel akward.

When I was a kid, if I said we went to Echo School (the name of our homeschool) they'd say, "Where's that?" and then I'd have to explain that we were homeschooled anyway. I found I got more blank stares that way. If I had just said I was homeschooled off the bat, I confused less people. That was just my own experience, and why I didn't name my own homeschool. I've always thought giving fancy names to things is kind of silly--I much prefer to call things what they are in plain English so people know what I'm talking about. It's just a pet peeve of mine.

Ours is Orchard Grove Academy ... our last name is Orchard, and we live relatively close to a place known as "the Grove". Our 'motto' is "Learning and Growing Together"
I do have letterhead and whatnot made up, simply because of all the issues we have with dd. This way, when we meet with her social worker (for her bipolar) we have something "official" (even if just in looks) on which I've drawn up a synopsis of what she is currently doing, what has been mastered, and what still needs work (such as life skills ... managing her emotions, etc)
Having a name is also nice when the radio runs contests for "school kids" ... they enter using our school name, and then they qualify for any prizes, etc. When we first tried entering just as "homeschooled" it wasn't accepted. Putting a name on it changed the way we were perceived. (I know that's not that important in the grand scheme of things, but when my kids have a school name to say, they are treated with more respect ... and I don't like the thought of knowing at age 5 what a double standard is ...)

It can depend on where you live and the laws there, and future plans for your kids. In order for us to homeschool legally without going through and ISP or charter, I had to file a private school affidavit, which required that we have an actual name for our school.

It goes a little beyond having a "fancy name" later on though, and more to professionalism. When our kids applied to college and the Navy and we had to fill out paperwork, they wanted to see the name of a school, not just "homeschooled" on the blank. And when I had to submit transcripts to the Navy and the university, it looked much more professional for them to have an actual name of a school like all the others they receive. Scholarships and grants all want the name of a school. It's not just fluff later on as they go into higher education or certain professions.

The reason we are naming our homeschool is as some have stated above. We want to be able to put something in the blank. There is a certain perception when you take yourself seriously that others are more likely to do so as well. When we write "Aletheia Homeschool Academy" rather than just homeschool, it impacts how people perceive the education that our children are receiving.
Dh likes our name. All the kids like it too. We decided to add "Homeschool" in the middle just for clarity.

With us, they knew at the college and the military that both girls were homeschooled, and they had no issues with that at all. But they expect a little professionalism in the records that come from a reputable "school" even if it's a homeschool. When they are competing with students that come from schools with big names, a no-name school sounds a little lacking in professionalism, and that is a huge turn off. My experience has been that colleges and the military love the homeschool students and what they are all about...but they want records and paperwork that looks as professional as any other students. I can't blame them...it goes to the seriousness of running a real school, at least in upper grades. Besides, how do you issue a realistic diploma without a proper name for your school? It won't be accepted by most universities and definitely not in the military.

No- they knew it was a homeschool, and I also had to submit professional looking transcripts. THEY were the ones that needed an official name, and not just the word 'homeschool'. They were really impressed at Seth's 'real' diploma in its nice leather case. Technically, is there a difference between a diploma printed from my computer and one made by a professional printer with an embossed gold stamp in a leather folder? No- but in their minds it made all the difference.

Well, if it's a requirement to get into college, I'll probably come up with something someday I guess. It just seems like such a small thing in the great scheme of things. I've always been of the opinion that what you call something doesn't mean squat--it's what it is that matters.

OK - you all have convinced me that we should give it some serious thought as a family & come up with a name we can all agree on. I'll talk with dh about it tonight. I can see how it could lend a seriousness & professional air to the diploma/applications etc... But I also understand Consecrated's point. It could seem like another hoop to jump through -but maybe a necessary one.

Well, think of it this way- any time we present any product or service to the public, a name is what we use to identify it. While kids are at home, this is not really an issue, but come time to present the homeschool 'product' to the public, a name often becomes necessary.
Names do carry meaning- I wouldn't take my laundry to "Dirty Harry's Dry Cleaning" or shop at the "Rigor Mortis Market". We give our children names that have meaning for us, and we go to churches called "Faith Chapel" and "Cornerstone Baptist Temple", not "Hellbound Central Church".

LOL, Sunnymom!  On the other side, though, if you took your laundry to "Clean as the Driven Snow Dry Cleaning" and they did a terrible job cleaning your laundry, you might go back to "Dirty Harry's Dry Cleaning" because they actually cleaned your laundry. When it comes down to it, the point is to get your laundry cleaned. It doesn't matter that the name on the building says they clean laundry, what's important is that they actually clean their laundry. Of course, no one is actually going to call it "Dirty Harry's" but what if it just said, "Dry Cleaning" on the front of the building, but they had good prices, good service, and did good work?

That reminds me of the old puzzle. A man is on a business trip and decides he needs a haircut. There are two barber shops in town. One has hair all over the place, it dirty, the barber had a bad haircut, etc. The other shop is neat as a pin, tidy, barber has a great haircut. Where does the man go? To the sloppy shop because that barber must have cut the other man's hair since they have to go to each other.
