If all the dry cleaning places in town were named "Dry Cleaning", you'd drive the guys who print the Yellow Pages nuts.
It's a fact of life that we must submit documents as 'proof' of our education, and the school having a name is just a part of that. It isn't a big deal when they are young, and unless you must have a name, as it is in some states, then a name might be something a family does for fun, or not at all.
Seth never cared if we had a name or not, but my younger guys wanted a name AND a mascot. AND T-shirts. Sheesh.

Ha! I only have six kids, so that's not a problem.
Yes, names differentiate ourselves, but we're the only homeschooling family living in this house.  We aren't accepting new students, either (unless they already live here) and we're not even in the Yellow Pages.
If I have to come up with a name someday to put on a diploma, I'll probably choose Lightbearer Home School, since Lightbearer is the meaning of our last name.

Our kids always took pride in having a "real" school name. They liked having a name to identify with. They even made banners and things for the schoolroom and came up with a mascot. My kids are creative It was a way of not only setting us apart, but also identified us as a serious place of education. I figured we were doing as much(probably more) work than the average public or private school, so we deserved a name that would reflect that we were a serious school. We would send thank you notes out(on letterhead with our school name) to places that did field trips or demonstrations for us, and it seemed to earn our local homeschoolers a lot more respect in the community. It was just a very simple way to be as professional as any other school.
Plus, I have to admit there were times I used the name to avoid conversations I didn't have the time or energy to get into with strangers. People would ask where they went to school and I'd say "Providence Christian". Most of the time, people would say something about never hearing of that but let it drop. Not nearly so quick and easy as answering "they are homeschooled"!

On a homeschool yahoo list I am on, there is a college admissions officer. She says that they get the same looking paperwork from every student. All the transcripts are sealed and have a seal on the envelope to show that they have not been tampered with. The paperwork has a stamp on it that shows it is an official document. When they get something that does not have these on it, they have to stop and investigate. It does not fit what they are used to seeing and dealing with, so it doesn't appear correct. When you do it the way they are used to, they don't give it a second look, they simply process it the same way they do all the others.
Having a name and a stamp makes the documents look the same as all the others. Yes, our documents are official with or without the stamp, but why be a cog in the wheel when you can just sail on through like all the rest? I suppose the reason we have done this is expediency and that's pretty much it. It is more expedient to fit into the normal way that these people are used to working rather than messing with their heads by turning in something that looks odd and doesn't meet their normal criteria, even if it’s just writing down the name of a school rather than only “homeschool.”

I agree, Cynthia.
Another big reason for us being so careful with having a proper name, records, letters, etc, is that homeschoolers already have a negative rap from so many institutions. Many think of us as people who don't do "real" school, or just haphazardly throw together lessons and keep incomplete records. I felt it was important to do anything I could to show that homeschoolers can have a school that is every bit as professionally organized and planned out as any other school. It just lends some credibility to your school in the eyes of the community and professional institutions, at least in our experience.

When we strive for excellence, it does impact how homeschooling is viewed as a whole, not just our homeschool. When we stamp and seal our records with our name before sending them in, it reflects on the homeschool community in general.
This is part of my preparation for my children, so they will be well received and well perceived by those who can impact their lives either positively or negatively. It may seem like jumping through unnecessary hoops, but the institutions do not see it that way. They may feel that they are having to jump through hoops to deal with homeschoolers who are not following the smooth path of standard procedure. As homeschoolers, we spend a lot of time not following the path of least resistance, but there is a time and a place for simply following the standard procedures.

I just completed homeschooling my 2 Grand Daughters their first year, and signed up for the 2009 year. I did name our school. The girls' last name is Hall, so I called our school Hallowed Halls High School. The logo I use is a yellow background with a pool of water, and one little drop hitting the pool, causing ripples out from it. That is how I want to affect my girls' education - I may be one small drop, but I intend to make some ripples that go a looooooong way out into their world one day. The girls came from a high school with black and gold colors, so I kept the gold as my background, and added the old Yellow Jacket to the logo, by putting a little Yellow Jacket drinking from the water's edge. What do you think? Did I choose well? I like it, anyway.

I was looking at our local paper today in the local business listings, and I saw an ad that reminded me of this thread. It made me laugh, and I had to come back and share it with you. The ad is for a business called "Hillbilly Lawn Care." Now how's that for a business name?
I did find it interesting that most of the businesses around here do have very plain-Jane names, using just their first and/or last names as part of their business name. There's Bray's Lawn Service, A & E salvage, L.W. Davis Excavating, John's Used Tire Shop, Melton's Tree Service, Morrison Towing Service, Pond's Tree Service, Wilson Excavating, Siscoe's Excavating, Bonham General Construction, Brother Carpentry, J.B. Construction, Shipley Bros. Construction, Tim Cox Concrete, and Mundy's Salvage. The only two that had "fancy" names in the entire section were Hillbilly Lawncare and Dream Clean Carpets. Must be a regional thing.

We had named our school "last name" homeschool...but we are leaning toward changing it this year (before oldest daughter graduates so it will be on her diploma) to a name to honor my grandmother who has been my biggest supporter and someone who had been a lifelong learner and someone who has always explempified excellence in ALL areas of her life...so we are thinking of Changing it to the Hazel E. "lastname" Academy for Excellence.

Unfortunately if it weren't for my family, that's what I'd have to name my yard maintenance. I am terrible at gardening. I hope my mother's fucia is alive. I just read a note she left (she's away) telling me to water it DAILY. Um, I hope someone around here has been watering, because Mother has been gone for two weeks and I haven't added a drop of water. TL was doing all that, but she is at camp this week and dh has been taking pity on me and helping water things.
WOF, that is a fabulous idea. How honoring.

There's nothing wrong with sounding home-schooly (and it can be a word because we made it one...homeschool didn't used to be a word...but we homeschoolers made it one!)...in fact...considering how most college are really starting appreciate homeschoolers....it may be to a student's advantage to sound home-schooly.....

Professional homeschoolers is kind of an oxymoron, but that's really what a lot of schools are looking for. They want to see that we have all our ducks in a row, but they also want the homeschooler who really was taught at his mother's bosom.

I'm seriously thinking of naming ours after my brother. I want to talk to the kids about it and find a way to do it without making them upset.
