What exactly is yoga?
Should christians partake in yoga?

Although there is a spiritualistic side to yoga, if you ignore all that and just perform it as exercise there's no problem I see. Those excercises can really kick your glutius and can really help build your physical stamina.

My wife got a few videos for exercises and I groan not from the fact that it is considered by some men as "chick exercise" but in the fact that I can't get through a 20 minute workout without dying! [sm=icon_smile_faint.gif]

I happen to be a yoga instuctor. Most western versions of yoga are so far removed from anything spiritual that it's really over-reacting to read too much into it. I wouldn't take classes in a yoga studio just because you could get an instructor who's got some weird ideas and tries to get spiritual on you - even then it would be a goofy imitation of anything really to be concerned with. Yoga in a fitness setting is just that - fitness. And it can be a phenomenal addition to any regimen. It's good for anyone at any level!

Thanks for the link! It was an interesting read! I am not a Crosswalk member so I'll comment on it here.

It seems some people are so willing to not claim the good of everything that God can give us. If I was worried about pagan stuff to the point of paranoia I wouldn't put up my Christmas tree which was associated with Saturnalia, the Roman pagan festival, along with holly and ivy but Christians have taken away from the pagan and reclaimed it for Christ! Why can't yoga be any different! Besides what's the difference a spiritualistic yoga adherent or a Christian pastor who's ministry is all about the money. Both are serving mammon IMO.

If I want to perform maintainance on this person's temple of the Holy Spirit using yoga exercises then I don't see the big deal!

First: You can post on any forum that's part of FCN ... just log in under that portal. Or alternatively, change the portal at the beginning of the link to whatever it is you're currently using.

Second: I do yoga nearly every day. The podcast that I use describes yoga as "breath with movement." And it is. It trains you to breathe through the movement and increase your flexibility, tone your muscles, uses your body for resistance training. I love it. My yoga podcast guy is a little on the spiritualistic side, but only at the very end when he says to give your good vibes to the world through your breathing. Whatever.

I just take that time to pray for my day or whatever.

It appears that there IS a spiritual background to yoga. Even the name means unity with the spirit of whatever. Should we separate our selves?

Be ye holy for I AM HOLY.... holy means separation.

For the record, Christ-mas is not under my celebration list....did God ask you to reclaim paganistic events?

And Christmas has incorporated imagry and props from the pagan Roman feast of Saturnalia! Television, radio and the internet weren't founded with a Godly purpose so why use those. Most ethnic or traditional cultural music was started in the respective countries' pagan times. We must separate......

I'd rather claim the world for Christ than sound the retreat! Separation from the world is to separate ourselves from what keeps us from God. I don't think excercise alone can do that! In fact I've seen people use religion in that regard as well.

I did read your post carefully. In fact, I've done lots of searching on this subject myself. I still stand by the fact that standing in an upside down V or in a lunge with my arms spread out is NOT pagan. In fact, many stretches that people do in gym class or to get ready to go to cardio is based in yoga moves. So all of you who sit with your legs spread out and lean forward to stretch the groin muscles ... watch out. That's a yoga move!

A number of the bodyweight exercises that are beneficial can also be found in other cultures, not just yoga. The dive bomb pushup, Iranian pushup or bear squat come to mind. Gymanstics and wrestling were quite common and central in the pagan Greek and Roman cultures. And I believe the Olympic games were rooted in pagan greek mythology. A few martial arts (kung fu, etc) started in the Shaolin temple (spiritual origin).

Does that mean that pushups, marathons, relays, javelin throws, self-defense tactics, many other bodyweight exercises and breathing techniques are a violation of scripture?

Sorry to have offended with the loaded word! Maybe I should have just politely asked what separation meant to prophet for I am curious!

I was trying to use an example where Christianity used former pagan symbols or imagry for Christian purposes. I wasn't aware that I should stick to examples concerning exercise only although I liked your examples, chemdude77, concerning the Olympics and martial arts.

I hope that puts me BOT!

You ahve understand that separation from the world means becoming a monk abd going into exile in some
forlorn environemnt. The word world here means the system of the world eg god of the world which is satan, worldly pleasures, etc. It does not mean separation from the people.

i think i can speak for martial arts. Do you know that martial art is a way of meditation as well as exercise?
It has the same system as yoga of emptying ones mind to attend different levels of sprituality.
In fact, kungfu masters who have attain higher levels sometimes goes into trances in which they are taken
over by 'something'. Does this sound like yoga? i understand yoga has this type of altered state as well?

I do understand your point that it can have a level of un-Christian spiritualism if we allow ourselves to get involved in that aspect of it. But we can choose to introduce it or not and I think that would be the difference of whether we make it a Christian experience or not or even just plain exercise.

Christians should not perform Yoga, not even just ignoring it's spiritual side can do away with what it was made to accopmlish. Every yoga position represents a woship position for the yogist, so to try and remove the spiritulaistic side of it is equivalent to playing with a Ouija and saying I'm just playing for the fun of it. We open doors ignorantly to the demonic realm when we do things like this. The devil does not care aobut our ignorance, he depends on it.

it was in IGnorance but it set the scene foe ALL of these.....when you bring the world into your house.

I only wish I was able to physically do yoga. I plan to be within the next six months. [:)]

Oh yeah......... I celebrate Christ's birth at the same time most people do. And I thank God for His son daily. [;)]

I am in no danger of marrying many non-Christian men, either.[8|]

Not talking about failures but the cause of Solomons failure was his ignorance in the beginning.... are some ignorant about the sprirtual side of yoga? [8|]
