The reason I asked is because hostas are usually shade plants. However, there are some that will do well in sunshine. Just be sure to read the tag at the plant nursery.

I bought some lilac bushes at the end of last year. One is decidedly more cheerful than the other, but neither has flowered (nore show any signs of it) so far this year. Does it take a year or two for them to flower?

My lilac blooms in May. Years ago when I had a young lilac plant, it bloomed very little until it got older. Lilacs like a little lime in the fall and be careful you don't prune them the wrong time of the year, or they will never bloom.

My lilacs quit blooming a couple of weeks ago. I have been pruning them since wild-rose said something. Btw, thanks, wild-rose. What you told me I have asked of others who pride themselves on gardening and have many lilac bushes. No one has ever told me to not wait on the pruning, and my bushes never bloom as I think they should.

I do have a lot of Shastas on the side of my house. Maybe I'll consider putting some in the front bed. I also have some beautiful Chinese poppies on the side of the house that I'm thinking about putting in that bed. They are in almost full sunshine (like the front bed) and they have done really well. Not sure how to transplate those though.

As to the peonies, I've heard they do pretty well; they just need a stake or some sort of cage to support them.

Your welcome, glad to help. Here is a picture of the church garden that is in sunshine. The big splash of purple that you might like is cat mint.

I'll throw out two ideas about the Chinese poppies. You could wait until Autumn and then transplant them. Also if you have flower heads that have turned to seed, that might be an easier way to spread them around. Just save the seeds until next spring and then plant them.
