How do you, as singles, or single parents, spend your holidays?

Are there things/places that you would want to do or visit but are hesitant to because you are single?

Grace-N-Mercy -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (7/12/2008 10:21:02 PM)

Generally, I treat the holidays as just a "day off" unless family & friends have something planned. I don't mind going to activities alone... I'm accustomed to doing things alone. (Of course, it would be much more fun to have a boyfriend to do things with...) Vacations... again, I don't mind doing things alone. The past two years, I've traveled to the mountains in the Fall just to see the changing of the seasons. I take safety precautions, of course, but if I really want to do something I do it. I don't let my singleness hold me back from anything.

CoeurdeLeon_ -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (7/12/2008 10:41:16 PM)

It depends if the kids are with me on holidays or not. Usually they at least have dinner at their paternal grandparents' so, like G-n-M, I treat it like a day off and spend it doing whatever I want.

We've only gotten to go on vacation twice since the divorce but we loaded up and went! If there's somewhere we want to go for a day trip, we go.

I do have difficulty convincing myself that I could go away for a couple of days all by myself. I've never been able to talk myself into it. I can't seem to justify it and I know I'd feel like I was shirking my responsibilities if I asked the grandparents to keep the kids for a couple of days. They would be glad to do it, I just can't bring myself to ask.[&:]

Prairiehiker -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (7/12/2008 10:53:49 PM)

I've never spent any holidays or vacations without my daughter. Holidays are just a normal day off for me which means we get to stay in bed a little longer then head off to the beach or the hit the trail or the slope in the winter.

We've taken yearly vacations and we go on a trip for a couple of weeks, usually to the mountains. Now that she's getting older (11), I think she wants to just stay in the city so she can hang out with her friends, which makes me a bit sad. But I guess it's part of child raising. This year might be our last trip until she's a bit older and wants to hang out with mom and I'm trying to make it a little more memorable.

I'm glad to have stuff to do. It's the not doing anything that's unbearable. But one or two days to laze around & sleep late is much appreciated.

So far, I haven't had to go overseas by myself, other singles who enjoy travelling usually accompany me. So God has been good thus far.

I just finished a week's vacation and - despite the extra, unnecessary garbage dumped on us by my ex-SIL's malice - I managed to spend a significant amount of it working. That's right, I worked. I did the job God made me for, that I am suited to, for which I have a passion, and which I can't find an hour a week to do when I'm working.

The day I retire, I go back to doing real work, full time; the day I retire I become a full-time writer.

onthewayray -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/3/2008 9:04:19 PM)

I have a few friends that I enjoy hanging out with. We go on hunting trips and campping And sometimes I just off by myself. I dont let the fact I am single stop me from doing what I enjoy.

Sometime I do wish I had someone to share it with but just the same I am going to enjoy life as it comes.......[:)]

LabGuy -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/3/2008 10:08:30 PM)

As far as holidays go, I'll go visit family for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The rest I just end up spending at home alone. [&o]

I'm getting better with vacations - taken three in the past four years. One to DC and two to NYC. Had friends at the other end I spent the time with, so I had a good time. This last time in NY I was on my own for quite a bit and most of the time I was good as there was a lot to keep my interest, but more than once I felt the absence of any companions acutely.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/3/2008 10:28:52 PM)

My Holidays I tend to spend locally. When I am on vacation I usually try to visit another city and perhaps meet up with someone there also.

FunBetty -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 12:09:54 AM)

I typically take my vacations to see family. Visiting my parents actually includes working at Disney (which is fun enough to count as vacation) and visiting with friends.

Last year I took my first "non-family visit" vacation, and it was so nice. A real vacation!!

song -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 1:55:57 AM)

I always just vacation with my mother. She's my best friend anyways. :o)

offtheisland -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 9:15:48 AM)

My vacation/holidays are spent with family. If my brother or cousin want to see me and the younger kids, they will send for us, otherwise we stay at home, sleep in, and go to the beach.

sunshinesoprano -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 9:55:32 AM)

What's a vacation? [&:]

I haven't been on a "real" vacation since 1997. Seriously. I travel with the quartet, of course, which is great fun, but it's hard work, so it's not really a vacation.

Holidays now are Mom and myself and some of them include our alto and bass singer, who are like my brother and sister after almost 6 years. It's nice to have some adopted family.

Otherwise, we just hang and go out to eat somewhere.

iwillfearnoevil -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 11:30:54 AM)

i do the family thing with my daughter just as i always have ... i haven't done a big weeklong vacation alone with my daughter yet, instead breaking it up into a few days here and there ... i'm more into day trips being single, things to do with friends or youth group ...

Today is National Mustard Day and I would love to go to the Mutard Day celebration in Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin but that wouldn't be any fun alone. So for my next vacation I'll probably just pack my gear on my horse and camp out in the mountains and do a little hunting.

What happens at a Mustard Day celebration?

Ditto![:D]

Since I opened my business I haven't been able to take a vacation.

The same thing that happens at strawberry festivals, watermelon festivals or pork producers jamborees. They have fun and consume mustard in any form and on anything they can think of.

Tinkerbell_ -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 9:34:57 PM)

One thing I thought of.

Since I've been a single mum I've been very nervous about traveling alone with the Things.

We did Orlando for a long weekend and I was completely stressed and frazzled. It was over Memorial Day Weekend (BIG mistake!) and Thing 2 is a very friendly but quite clueless child. I had bought necklaces for the two of us that beeped if he got too far away from me.

Blasted thing was going off all week!

I'd turn around and he be wondering off with Storm Troopers, Princess Leia, and even Jar Jar Binks! [sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif]

We haven't done vacations like that since. We either drag a friend with us, or go with my parents. Even as old as the boys are now, I still wouldn't go to a huge theme park without another adult with us.

The horror... the horror... [sm=icon_smile.gif]

(Not meaning to make light of the issue, really. It's just... Jar Jar? <Shudders>)

I am taking a two week vacation starting Wednesday. I am going to a baseball tournament for 6 days. I intend to watch 30 games in 6 days. My sister and BIL will be there part of the time. The rest of the time I will be resting.

I have already taken two extended weekend trips this year to meet other posters.

I also have a couple of trips scheduled for the fall.

trinigirl722 -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/4/2008 10:33:14 PM)

Most of my vacations consist of going home to visit my family (who live several states away).

We have great fun, but I would really like to go on vacations to new places with friends. Unfortunately, none of my friends are potential travel companions -- they are either married and vacation with their families or just aren't interested in taking a trip together. The closest I've come to vacations with friends is going to visit friends who've moved away.

Onecontent -> RE: Vacations/Holidays (8/5/2008 10:03:31 PM)

I try to take a week to be with my parents in the spring and I go on a non-family vacation in the fall. For the past couple of years I have gone on discount cruises by myself but with the price of fuel I do not see that as an option this year unless I become desperate.

I am curious....mustard in any form? What kind of forms? I like mustard, and have not had the opportunity to explore other ways to consume mustard except by adding the powder or squeezing it on food.

When I say in any form, I mean, "Mustard of any imaginable flavor." There are mustards flavored with beer, wine and liquors of every type. Flavored with every herb, spice, fruit, and vegetable available. There are whole grain, course and smooth mustards, hot mustards, sweet mustards, mustards with nuts and honey, brown sugar, maple syrup. There are mustards made from different types of mustard seeds; yellow brown or black. The darker the seed the hotter the flavor. There mustards mixed for use on sandwiches, meats and even for use as dessert sauces. And there are mustards available from nearly every country on the planet. I'll admit that I'm a little weird where mustard is concerned.
