I'm an atheist, and you'll have trouble finding any pro-religion songs on my computer.

But good music and good music, so I suppose I'm missing out on a potential genre.

I promise to listen to anything you recommend for me so long as it doesn't get to be 15 songs a day or something, lol.

If it's not against the rules, I'll recommend some atheistic/secular songs after a while.

Grunt and puke is what I always called death metal singing lol To this day I still love the song Arms of love. Very beautiful and heartfelt

PhrozenPhoenix -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/15/2008 6:52:54 AM)

Well... I dunno.. I only listen to metal and the only two Christian metal bands I like are REALLY extreme metal (but they are what got me into the extreme metal stuff though).

The only other band I can think of is the rock band, Skillet. I don't really listen to rock but these guys are good. Aside from the two metal bands, this the only other Christian band I really like (not a lot of good Christian bands in the metal scene... not that I like anyway. I'm extremely picky though :D)

Anyway... these guys are awesome IMO. I love vocalist who sing at the top of their lungs pouring everything they have into it and this guy does that. Nice raspy voice too...
Skillet - Whispers in the Dark One of my favorite Skillet songs.
Skillet - Looking for Angels Slower Skillet song... more of a talking song but I love the chorus.
Skillet - Imperfection Probably my favorite from their Collide album.
Skillet - Will You Be There? Nice ballad from one of their really old albums...

Anyway ya their sound changes with each album it seems. I only like the last two albums for the most part... the others are too industrial/electronic synthpop stuff but I dunno still good when I'm in the mood. But ya thats all I have to recommend really...

PHmosh1 -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/15/2008 7:46:06 AM)

I've really gotten into needtobreathe lately. Those white boys have some soul! Definitely worth a listen.

The Almost is really cool, too.

Starflyer 59 is pretty good. I can only take them in small doses, though.

!

I heard a song by them a long long time ago.. but I haven't been able to find it since.

It had something like "long line" "jesus".. something.. I dunno. :-(

SavedByGraceMD -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/15/2008 6:56:09 PM)

I agree with PHmosh1 about NeedToBreathe. some songs from them
Don't wait for daylight, lost,again, I won't look back.

Warren Barfield-Love is not a fight

Tenth Avenue North-Love is here

Story Side B-more to this life

Seventh Day Slumber-missing pages, and awake

and one more

Fireflight-unbreakable, last kiss

I know you said no to give too many at once, but these are a few of my favorites.

ravneskrik -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/16/2008 12:53:56 AM)

Wovenhand, Wovenhand and umm... Wovenhand :p

Other than that I doubt you would care for any of the christian bands I like unless you have a thing for black metal.

everythingat -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/16/2008 1:35:08 AM)

I like your taste in music, PrexicKehdaki. I'm not much of a fan of Christian music usually, but here are the few that comes to mind.

Fine China/The Foxglove Hunt
Starflyer 59
Danielson
Anathallo
Cool Hand Luke

Yeah, that's about it. And I don't even like those bands that much, aside from Danielson. He's great. Here are two secular recommendations for you. Daniel Johnston, so amazingly brilliant. Although he does have some Christian inspired lyrics...it's more disturbing that uplifting. Little Wings, really great folk.

Edit- Forgot this: The Innocence Mission.

PureLight -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/16/2008 2:14:58 AM)

Well, wow, Prexic, I love me some Kate Nash, Regina, and the pillows.

As a point of interest, it's Japanese but the translated lyrics are very Christian inspired. http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=2lEnD3zcSIM

I love her voice and own like everything she's released.

Also, I love dc Talk. They've got some catchy melodies. I don't see you -loving- them but we share a few things (I imagine you like a bit more...esoteric stuff) so hey, why not try.

Sounds like Jaci Velasquez, kinda sorta. Got a link to those translated lyrics?

lol, well I'm always up for vocals I don't understand.. it lets me add my own meaning. :P

-listening now-

:O

I'm liking it!

PrexicKehdaki -> RE: Recommend me some Christian songs, I'll recommend some secular ones (7/16/2008 10:31:11 AM)

Thanks for all the recommendations guys! I'm listening to as many as I can..

I'm still not sure if I can post songs with atheistic lyrics.. but hm, here's a compromise..

The Thermals are one of my favorite bands.. they're atheists and are really critical of Christianity.. but for some reason, their lyrics are almost pro-Christian on the surface level. Like I thought they were a Christian band when I first heard them.

Listen to..

Returning to the Fold

Pillar of Salt

If atheistic lyrics ARE against the TOS, the most extreme they get is

"but I still have faith
if I ever had faith"

EDIT: this one's good too.. :] and has nothing to do with religion

MORAL's Funeral translation

The call of an owl warns of "death"
Darkness rips wounds apart and calls on the full moon
From believers and unbelievers to the Father
Everyone's dressed in mourning clothes and listening to the wind

This evening will be Moral's funeral
Pater Noster (Our Father)

The falling stars are heaven's tears, the trees' moaning rings throughout the woods
The lake passes on the sorrow from its surface to the wind
The wind that calls and leads everyone to the funeral hall

This evening will be Moral's funeral

Love is seated in front
Beside which, Philosophy chews on his cigarette deep in thought
Pride and Devotion sits right behind
Deep in conversation with serious faces

No one could hide their shock
Pater Noster

The still-young Innocence, lead by Wisdom in hand
Offers a white rose to the casket
Reason stands from her seat and lifts up her black veil
Slowly beginning her speech at the end of the ceremony

"My son's sudden departure still leaves my
heart in confusion
I'll never forget his resonating voice and honest eyes

I'm sure, even now, he's shining on us like a lighthouse
When we are lost, when we stray and when we can't see the path
He lives on in your heart, at the turning point of good and evil"

Pater Noster

Sympathy nods furiously as the clapping rings
Truth whispers into Reason's ears

"I once had a son
Even though Hope has left us,
He still lives on in everyone"

When the owl stops its call and flew away
The sun rises amidst the morning mist

The Thermals are great. My favorite from them is the album before that one, which I can't even mention the title without being in violation of TOS.

Also, Calibretto are Christian. They were a bit of a rip-off of Violent Femmes...but that's not a bad thing, right? And early Pedro the Lion was wonderful. The Whole EP has to be one of the best indie Christian releases. You should really go for Danielson, particularly his last album. It had a lot of guest appearances from great secular bands. Sufjan Stevens used to play with him.
