I voted for the Statesman.

Most imitated, most innovative, set the standard.

I loved the Cathedrals, but I don't think that they made nearly the impact.

Wow...I almost find myself agreeing with K1. My favorite was and is The Cathedrals. They had the greatest impact in my adult lifetime...at least since the 80's.

But I kinda agree with K1. Only being this close to Memphis, and factoring in the press from the tradgedy and the continuing presence of their posterity, my vote goes to the BB's!

The Blackwood Brothers would be second on my list.

Yes Sir. we are thinking in the same vein. Statesmen would be 2nd on mine...but only slightly behind. They would be first if the question was phrased differently, as in "musical impact"...but for total impact, and for all the previously mentioned reasons, my opinion is the BB's, by a nose!
(did I say that?)

They are TOPS on my personal list!!! TOP Favorite. TOP Impact. TOP in my heart. I knew these men. Loved these men. No doubt, if we are talking about traditional Qt singing and entertaining, they had the greatest impact on you, me and our generations. Four MAJOR groups carry on their banner today. They cover their songs. Employ their arrangers. Use their songwriter.

BUT, the question was, the most "impact"...Mmmm?
The simple answer to me is a question.
WHO had the most "impact" on The Cathedrals?
Had to be one of their forerunners...BB's, Statesmen, etc.
That's what I see "impact" meaning.

Well, the Cathedrals are my all-time favorite group but I must say that the Statesmen had the biggest impact of all time with the Blackwood Brothers a close second. Those two groups plus the Cathedrals set the standard for everyone else.

I would have to go with the Happy Goodmans. I think their impact on the modern era of Southern Gospel music is unmatched. I don't discount the impact of both the Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers but more groups in the modern era (IMO) take from the Happy Goodmans sound/style than that of the Statesmen or Blackwood Brothers.

If we were to name individuals rather than groups, then Ed O'Neal would be at or near the top of that list. Look at how many careers he has launched. He certainly has a knack for finding new talent!

I've started to vote several times but haven't yet. I'm sure I understand what is being asked but I personally think of the groups and individuals whose actions rather than music styles have had a huge impact and I'm then conflicted on voting for just music styles that impacted.

I would have to agree with the statement about Ed O"Neal. He has impacted almost countless artists lives as they got their start at EOU. Now look at how many top groups have former members of the Dixie Melody Boys singing with them. Now that is impact if I've ever seen it.

I don't think the Dixie Melody Boys are one of the best groups out there, but they are one of the best at the style that they sing.

I voted The Goodmans. I agree with Deeann that so much more than musical influence comes into play here. I think that The Goodmans were instrrumantal in elevating the level of ministry in Southern Gospel, as well as their influence on musical style and innovation.
